Anyone else prepared to admit they actively wanted to bf in order to stick it to The Man!

Of course, breast is best for my baby, and all.

But - anyone else read 'The Politics of Breastfeeding' and think: no damn evil corporation is going to take advantage of my need to feed my baby, dammit. Those lousy companies, still responsible for infant deaths in the developing world, ain't getting a penny of my cash.

Etc. Etc.

Breastfeeding was as much a political issue for me as it was a bonding and nurturing one. I'm not afraid to admit it!

In your face, The Man!

You see: you're postmodern, now.

Well Boden is a tool of evil capitalism. I am off to print myself a hand loomed t-shirt with a big picture of a cervix on it. Anybody else want one??

Penthesileia · 03/01/2009 11:32

Oooooooh! Meeeeeeeeeee!

BoffinMum · 03/01/2009 11:44

Actually I am not even sure what a cervix looks like. I don't think I have ever looked at one. I am off to Google images.

BoffinMum · 03/01/2009 11:46

Eeeeeooww. Like a nork with a funny inverted nipple.

God, midwives have to poke their fingers through that. They can't pay these women enough IMO.

mawbroon · 03/01/2009 13:38

I take it you don't ever check the position of your own cervix then boffin?

BoffinMum · 03/01/2009 13:43

Um, why would I care? Should I be doing this?

BoffinMum · 03/01/2009 13:45

Also how do you see it if it's Up There? You can't hold a mirror and turn your hands into a DIY speculum at the same time, surely (sorry if TMI).

I clearly should have gone to that youth group. Vaginas I am happy with. Vaginas I can do. But cervixes ...

mawbroon · 03/01/2009 13:53

No need if you don't want to, but plenty women check the position as it rises and falls with ovulation.

No mirrors required, just done by feel.

I just struggle to understand the eeeuw factor, it's part of your body same as any other!

giantkatestacks · 03/01/2009 13:57

yep there was/is that element but also:

-the MIL/daily mail readers thing
-my mum did in the early 70s when it was very much a weird thing to do and I wasnt going to not live up to her standards
-having had 2 emergency sections and feeling like i hadnt tried hard enough meant I was damn well going to bf...
-the fact that it influences other women when you feed in public (hopefully positively)

FairLadyRantALot · 03/01/2009 14:00

I just breastfed because I am lazy!

Tbh, when I had ds 1 I had no strong feelings about it all....I did it, it felt right, I stopped at 4 month because I couldn't cope wiht the leaking and him vomiting all over me all the time....and didn't really think about it.

When I had ds2 I also had access to the INternet and became involved with parenting forum, it was then that I became more aware of the political issues, etc....it was then when I became more passionate about it!
However, originally I didn't feel thatstrong about bf with ds2 neither, but knew that I did not want to ff, because I found it such a nightmarish faff...

By ds3, one could say I felt very strongly about it and possibly did it partly due to the reasons op described

But really lazyness was always my main reason

BoffinMum · 03/01/2009 14:02

Mawbroon, I think it's because it looks more delicate and oozing than other bits, and it seems a bit like poking your eye or something.

GreenMonkies · 03/01/2009 14:05

I was not in the least bit political about infant feeding until I was doing it myself. I honestly, naively thought that only those who couldn't didn't, and had no idea what a hot potato it was.

Oh, how things have changed in the last 5 years (of continual lactation!)......

mawbroon · 03/01/2009 14:07

LOL at delicate and oozing!

I challenge you to have a feel for it!!

You will be amazed at the way it changes during your cycle

BoffinMum · 03/01/2009 14:11

Won't that induce premature labour (I am 27 weeks pg)? I am scared of my poor Cx.

mawbroon · 03/01/2009 14:15

Don't think so. Not if everything else normal.

Anyway, we digress from the thread...

Good luck with the rest of your pg

harpsichordcarrier · 03/01/2009 14:17

I have been bf continuously for five years and eight months.
and fuck it yes I am proud

foxytocin · 03/01/2009 14:22

like GM, I was blissfully unaware that how I fed my baby defined so much.

I established bfing despite the odds and continued to do so as my way of sticking it to the health profs whose only feeding advice was to 'top up with formula.'

with dd2, refusing to use formula is a way of sticking it to 'the man'.

notcitrus · 03/01/2009 16:14

A bit, yes.
Bottles sounded too complicated with the new scary warnings, not to mention more getting out of bed at night.

Have to admit that the three biggest factors making me continue bf were A's health, wanting to prove I could be a 'good' mother despite my house falling down around me, and the fact that breastfeeding is the first thing ever that my mother admits she knows nothing about...

thisisyesterday · 03/01/2009 19:01

for any of you who are truly into "cervix watching" lol

my beautiful cervix

(contains pics of a cervix through the duration of a womans menstrual cycle0

BoffinMum · 03/01/2009 19:11

OMG

At least she didn't put it on YouTube alongside the ones of people getting fatter day by day in 30 seconds whilst pg, to the soundtrack of 'Lady in Red' or somesuch.

Perhaps I shouldn't say this in a post or she might get ideas.

GreenMonkies · 03/01/2009 20:50

Harpsi, I've been breastfeeding for 5 years, 4 months and a week, with the last 2 years, 6 months and 2 weeks of those in tandem, and fuck yes, I'm proud too!

I confess I was delighted to be tandem feeding partly because it was a bit of a political statement (don't ask me to explain, I'm not sure I could!!) but when I first had DD1 I had no agenda what so ever.

FairLadyRantALot · 03/01/2009 20:51

lol...now.....I am not squeemish or anything....but putting your cervix online like that....well...not sure what would give anyone the idea that that is a good thing to do, lol.....
