periods after stopping breast feeding?

I know its been asked before - I tried searching but got way too much info to wade through - its a quick one, how long do I wait for af before I start to worry?

the history is when ttc ds1 no periods and was referred to infertility clinic but investigations not finished when told I was pg, then one af/spotting before ds2 conceived....

My period came about 6 weeks after stopping bf (DS1 fed for 7 mths; DS2 for 19 mths).

I can't help either - mine came back while still bf DD at 5 months (am still bf her at 9 months - periods have been irregular but continued) but I recall from other threads that it varies considerably!

Given your history though, you might want to see a doc anyway, just to be reassured? Good luck!

I'm still bf 1year old and have had 2 really light periods so still not back to normal...

I think it varies greatly. I got periods at 6 months when still breastfeeding but started giving DS solids.

Not really an anwer to your question: WARNING! I bled (a little) about 6 weeks after stopping to BF DS1, and then again ca 4 weeks after that.
2 weeks later had + HPT (done because of sore boobs) and scan following week (done because of history of recurring miscarriages) showed 16 week baby . I must have conceived the week after I stopped BFing.
So, BEWARE, you CAN conceive before you had a period...

mine never came back. discovered i was 4 month pregnant. only realised when felt kicking. was still bf at time. only had sex once, using withdrawl.

thought . . whats the chances!!

now i know! i carry a barge pole at all times to fend off dp

thank you - tbh if pg not really a problem but I doubt it! last time I had spotting 3 wks after stopping bfeeding then must have fallen pg bout 2-3wks after that.... its only been 4 wks since I stopped bfeeding so don't want to run to docs just yet if 'normal' is that it can take a bit longer... I just need some feedback on normal as last af was 2003!

oh shit Elmo don't say that - am still BF 7 month old morn and bedtime - no periods at all yet - DTD once with estranged H - weight seems to be increasing - no kicks or sickness though - OMG OMG OMG could I be pregnant

macdoodle. i had no sickness.i had been at gym really regular so never put on weight. noticed i had stopped losing weight. but just thought i'd hit a plateau with my weight. how very very wrong.

but sure mine can't be that common a thing to happen. dont worry. just use contraception from now on.

ok still no af - whats 'normal'? anyone had to wait a long time to get their cycle back?

have you done a test. put your mind at rest that your not pg.

how long have you stopped?

I'd had cramps for couple of days so did pg test but not pg - I wouldn't mind if was, I just want my cycle back soon as then I can have a discussion with dh about when to ttc dc3

I stopped bfeeding completely 5 wks ago, I did that last time with ds1 and af arrive 3 wks after, ds2 is 8mo, he slept thro (12hrs) from 12 wks so I'd always hoped that and then weaning would give me a cycle but nothing

5 weeks is nothings. could be a couple of months. wouldn't start to worry until your milk was completely dry.

thanks elmoandella - thats the kind of sainity check I was after before I make unnecessary appointment at GP's just frustrated as want ttc no 3, I'd love to be one of these people that fall pg whilst bfeeding cause then I wouldn't have had to stop!

insywinsyspider, I stopped BF 4 weeks ago, partly to TTC #3, and ovulated 12 days ago (according to Fertility friend). Yesterday I got a BF(aint)P!

I would get a BBT thermometer, and start taking your temperature on waking each morning - you might be able to catch the first egg!

Just re-read that you had cramps. That could have been ovulation, so you might see a period in about 2 weeks, if you haven't had unprotected sex, or a +HPT if you have.

Af started about 6 weeks after dd1 and ds were born even though I was fully bf, however I had to wait just over eleven months after dd2 was born as I unexpectedly got pg with ds, so dd2 was just 11 months when he was born. Was funny when the hosp would ask for the date of last af to work out how far pg I was.

so when should I expect my boobs to stop making milk? I can still squeeze some out ( tried tonight just out of curiosity) I'm bord of waiting for af now... I'm so so impatient!

reviving this thread as its now 2 months since I stopped bf and no af - am temping but apart from an erractic start (which I've put down to me being out of practise and ds2 teething) I now have consistent temps and fertility friend is confirming no cycle....

whats the longest people have had to wait for a period after stopping completely? all I can find are threads about how people got period whilst ex bf... wish that was me
