Advice please. Don't laugh, I trapped my nipple when slamming the car boot.........

On Wednesday, I took some stuff for recycling and whilst standing slightly to the side of the car boot, I slammed it down and caught my nipple in the space between the boot and the car . I thought I had amputated it first off, but it is just very very bruised ( my nipple is a weird blue colour). I came home in shock, put ice on it and have been taking paracetamol.

I am breastfeeding my 6 month old DS and over the last 48 hours have been feeding from my right boob and (painfully) expressing enough from my left to keep up supply.

My DP who is a Dr has checked it over and says it will get better in time, but I am in such pain I feel a bit like giving up. I BF my other 2 until they were 18 months and I feel like if I do I will short change DS3. He has also got 2 very sharp teeth and has in the last 2 days started to bite me very hard. I am wondering if he is not getting enough milk from my right boob plus the bit I have expressed.

Anyway I need advice ...

  1. Any advice for helping my nipple recover.

  2. Should I start some solids now.

  3. How to stop DS3 biting.

Need moral support to keep on feeding too !!

poor poor you!

  1. arnica can't do any harm

  2. if you think he's ready - 6 months is old enough to start giving interesting things like bread and cheese.

  3. say "no", put on your serious face and stop the feed. they get the message soon enough.

SmartArse · 28/09/2007 11:51

Oh my word, I can't help, but I just wanted to sympathise! How unbelievably painful!

peggotty · 28/09/2007 11:51

[shock} you poor thing!!! No advice but just want to commiserate and bump thread for you!

ComeOVeneer · 28/09/2007 11:53

Apply arnica cream onto the area would be my best advice. Poor you

pooka · 28/09/2007 11:53

OUch. Feel rather queasy at thought of such nipple compression.
Agree that arnica may help.

conkertree · 28/09/2007 11:58

wow that sounds extremely painful - poor you.

the arnica sounds like a good idea.

i thought you had to start introducing solids at 6 onths as their iron supplies etc that they are born with have started depleting and breast milk doesnt have enough iron etc.

agree with lulu on 3 but not from personal experience.

moral support - keep going with the breast feeding - its clear you want to, and however much pain you are in now, it will get better. in 18 months, a week ~(or however long it takes to heal) is not a long time, and so you would probably regret it if you did stop. saying that, nobody would think badly of you if you did - you've done really well to bf for 6 months and anything more is a bonus.

hope you feel better soon.

Blandmum · 28/09/2007 12:00

Shit a brick! That must have hurt.

Have no advice but just sending lots of sympathy

belgo · 28/09/2007 12:02

ohh that sounds nasty! poor you!

mishymoo · 28/09/2007 12:05

ouch - poor you!

Agree with Arnica Cream - wouldn't do any harm, may not taste nice for LO but if he isn't feeding from that breast, should be fine.

Don't give up BF - you obviously love doing it so try and bear the pain for a little longer!

Also, try going without a bra for a few days (if you can) or wear a very soft one.

Oooooooooooh you poor thing. I have had a bruised nipple before but not as bad as that, and it hurts a lot. Massive sympathies to you.

Someone here is always raving about some silver things you can put on nipples to aid healing - I don't know if they would work in this case, but I think if I were you I would try anything! They might be called Silverettes....help me out here someone.

evenhope · 28/09/2007 12:15

Oh Laidback how awful. I bet you didn't know what to do with yourself.

Haven't tried these myself but other people on MN have recommended them for mastitis or cracked nipples so they might help silverette

6 months is OK to start solids so seems like a good time.

evenhope · 28/09/2007 12:16

Rosylily · 28/09/2007 13:39

eek! Laidback reading this made my toes curl. Why couldn't you close your finger in the door like everyone else Thank goodness it's just badly bruised.

Hasan got two teeth really early and bit me rotten for about a fortnight but now he doesn't bite. And we are all cosy and happy with the feeding again.
you could try him with some solids..he might go for it and that will give you and your nipple more space.

The breast feeding is going to get less demanding from here on in. Even if you only feed from one side for a bit it would be fine. A friend of mine only fed from one side for a year or so and she had one big boob and one smaller one but now she has stopped they evened up again.

foxcub · 28/09/2007 13:41

OMG laidback - your poor love!!!

Take loads of Norofen - its great for reducing inflamation and pain

Plus the arnica - its a miracle cure

Re. the biting DS2 is biting me too so will watch your thread for tips

Poor you

foxcub · 28/09/2007 13:43

I meant Ibuprofen, - get a Boots unbranded one and its much cheaper than "Nurofen". You can take 4 doeses every 24 hours for a few days until the pain subsides.

mytwopenceworth · 28/09/2007 13:43

I am sorry, I have no advice but

OWIE OWIE OWIE! My hand flew involuntarity to my nipple when I read your op. I swear I felt a twinge!

You poor poor sod!

JodieG1 · 28/09/2007 13:44

Ouch, must be so painful, poor you.

Ds2 started to bite a few times just after he got his teeth but it seemed to be because he didn't realise he could hurt me and once he knew he stopped doing it. Occasionally if he wasn't ready to feed he gave me a nip as well.

NatalieJane · 28/09/2007 13:55

I might be wrong, but I don't think you can take Ibuprofen while breastfeeding...?

Another 'ouch' from me aswell BTW.

NineUnlikelyTales · 28/09/2007 15:34

It's okay, you can definitely take it.

foxcub · 28/09/2007 16:27

You can definately take Ibuprofen whilst Bfing - I have had it recommended by my GP before now, for sore nips.

NatalieJane · 28/09/2007 16:37

Bloody hell, about 6 months ago I had the mother holly god of all migrains, literally couldn't move off my bed for 3 days and they said to just take paracetamol

Bastards

flamingtoaster · 28/09/2007 16:43

Oh that sounds so painful - hope you feel more comfortable soon. DS only bit me once - I immediately lifted him up to eye level and very firmly said "No." He never did it again.

LaidbackinEngland · 28/09/2007 17:23

Thanks everyone. Have bought arnica and will investigate the silver things..... boots shuld have a government health warning !
