Advice please. Don't laugh, I trapped my nipple when slamming the car boot.........

On Wednesday, I took some stuff for recycling and whilst standing slightly to the side of the car boot, I slammed it down and caught my nipple in the space between the boot and the car . I thought I had amputated it first off, but it is just very very bruised ( my nipple is a weird blue colour). I came home in shock, put ice on it and have been taking paracetamol.

I am breastfeeding my 6 month old DS and over the last 48 hours have been feeding from my right boob and (painfully) expressing enough from my left to keep up supply.

My DP who is a Dr has checked it over and says it will get better in time, but I am in such pain I feel a bit like giving up. I BF my other 2 until they were 18 months and I feel like if I do I will short change DS3. He has also got 2 very sharp teeth and has in the last 2 days started to bite me very hard. I am wondering if he is not getting enough milk from my right boob plus the bit I have expressed.

Anyway I need advice ...

  1. Any advice for helping my nipple recover.

  2. Should I start some solids now.

  3. How to stop DS3 biting.

Need moral support to keep on feeding too !!

Oooohh Laidback, how horrid for you, you must have been quite shaken. It will heal soon enough though{{hugs}}

Oh my god, I just nearly cried in sympathy for you. Owwwwwwwch!

You can take ibruprofen and paracetamol together (the hospital recommended it after labour). No other advice or recommendation except a f*uck of big bar of chocolate!

Oh you poor thing. Right - the old favourite CABBAGE LEAVES will reduce the swelling and cool the area down a bit (the bruises themselves are a good sign that healing is starting). You will probably notice a lot of heat around the area while it's healing, cold wet flannels can help.

Non steriodal anti-inflammatories (e.g. ibuprofen) will help with the pain and also reduce the swelling. Yes you can take them if you are bfing providing you have no bleeding issues. Your child can have infant nurofen from three months too!

In terms of biting, I used to swaddle DD and hold her very very tightly so she couldn't pull away and bite and whenever she tried, the breastfeed would be ended and she would be unceremoniously dumped in her cot while I stepped out of the room (and swore/cried/stomped my feet).

Can I also suggest you get some teething gel for your LO. He is biting because he's in pain! He's not old enough to be doing it for effect, he is just trying to relieve pressure on the gum. Frozen flannels, teething gel, teething beads, anything else you can give him to bite on will help. You know this, you've done all this before

It WILL get better, keep at it, you are doing brilliantly!

You can take ibuprofen and paracetamol together as someone said. What is also good is to stagger the doses so that when one is wearing off, the other is still doing its stuff, so take paracetamol then 2 hours later have ibuprofen and then two hours after that have paracetamol again. That way you still have 4 hours between doses of each medicine. And poor poor you.

Thanks guys. Boob is much improved today, although I am dripping milk from the injured nipple constantly which I am gathering for feeds.

Thanks for all your advice.

oooooooooooooouch!

You have my sympathy. I once trapped my nipple in the folding mechanism of my Phil & Ted's whilst I was bf ( well, I wasn't actually bf at that moment, obviously!)

Flamesparrow · 29/09/2007 17:58

You poor thing!!!

DS bit me at just gone 12 months, and I had erm, a near detachment situation on one nipple - I had to feed from just one side for a couple of weeks whilst it healed, lots of hot baths and just letting the milk leak out (I couldn't express as it just opened the wound again).

But I did find that when he tried to go back to it I had production issues and he would get frustrated

It was easier to feed from one side only at that age though as he was having much less feeds each day anyway.

Lots of sympathy here

MrsSeanSlater · 29/09/2007 18:09

{shock] Ouch!
Could you feed DS from just the unbruised boob rather than stopping bf altogether? My DS2 favoured one side so we stopped using the other and it just sort of dried up while the one he preferred continued to produce milk.
Hope it's better soon.
