Editor's Comment on Breast Feeding in "Glamour" Magazine

In her Editor's Letter at the fron of this months issue Jo Elvin refers to a converstation with Mylene Klass about pregnancy and babies.

She makes a flippant comment along the lines of "So does BF ruin your boobs" "Um, Yeah".

I read this in total shock. Is it just me or is that a totally irresponsible thing for a young woman in such a high profile position to say? I BF my DS for well over a year and I would say that I still have pretty perky breasts thank you very much. I feel that the comment she made was misjudged and it would be very sad if such a comment puts women off BF. Surely young women in the media should be actively encouraging BF not making comments like that.

I admit that most people woudl not consider glamour magazine to be the first place to look for advice on BF put if that flippant comment puts even one woman off BF when she may otherwise have done so then it is a real shame.

I have just cancelled my subscription to Glamour for various reasons (mainly as it really does not reflect my lifestyle as a 30 something single mum who works full time and barely has time to pluck her eyebrows but there you go)

Oh i dunno.
Women always make flippant comments about pregnancy/birth/breastfeeding/kids ruining your stomach/skin/fanjo/sex life/marriage/home/bank balance.

Well, I'd say that the vast majority of comments by MN'ers about what BF has done to their boobs would mean that you are in the minority so IMHO you are over-reacting.

It is not a good idea generally to hide the unpleasant truths about anything in life but if the editor were BF friendly they could have said "but BF makes the weight just drop off, doesn't it" again a sweeping generalisation not found to be true by a lot MN'ers posting about post-natal matters but it would balance up the article's slant on BF'ing bearing in mind the potential target market for Glamour magazine.

I kept my extra weight on until I stopped BF and my breasts barely increased from a 36A during pregnancy and BF - life is just not fair is it?

he moans about how the dds have wrecked hs back and shoulders. bending to pick them up from the cot and bath is what he says has done it. serves him right for being a long legged stork man

My dh says the same ( I remember ages ago urging you to send your dh to an osteopath)which annoys me as he is with them for ooh.......25% of the time.

The only thing that has worked long term for me is running.

havign big tits has ruined my shoulders and back too, am in osteopaths debt and no doubt he is already planninghis retirement on my fees

I am getting them reduced after bf is done with.

well BF has made my boobs shrink (not while it was going on, obviously....afterwards)
and they were pretty damn small to begin with.
Not fair!

not sure Mylene can be expected to be a BF spokesperson tbh. She probably wasn't really thinking in those terms when she replied.

I too want a breast reduction, mine got bigger with each pregnancy and didn't shrink back (I didn't breast feed).

moondog, hes spent a small fortune on osteopaths etc

had MRI scans etc

he has good, long-term pain relief now so hes kind of accepted it

and he doesnt sit on a train 4hrs every day now

Is there actual evidence that bf does anything to your norks, long-term, compared with ff? I had thought that the consensus was now that it was being pregnant and having a baby, along with the changes that brings in the nork department, that had the impact rather than what you did or didn't do with said norks afterwards?
