This country is a disgrace

She was found sleeping rough with depression so they chucked her kids into care and stuck her in a detention centre. But it's ok because she's a failed asylum seeker.

Angry
katierocket · 22/05/2007 17:32

That is utterly shameful.

Chandra · 22/05/2007 17:33

Shonaspurtle... back in february (or March) the US decided to arrest and deport a significant number of illegal immigrant working women, but decided not to deport the children/partners because they were American citizens by birth. Many of them had very young babies which were, initially, not taken care of.

I wish human rights organisations had made more noise about it

moondog · 22/05/2007 17:33

Fucking hell.

shonaspurtle · 22/05/2007 17:39

Chandra, that's awful. I didn't realise this sort of thing was going on.

OP posts:
Chandra · 22/05/2007 18:00

Is actually far worse. In the US case they were talking of hundreds of mothers (though not all of them were still BF).

here

edam · 22/05/2007 18:02

Oh FFS. I get the impression the home office picks on easy targets and treats them in an utterly inhumane manner in order to get their figures for deportations up. Bastards.

MamaPyjama · 22/05/2007 18:18

Do you think Beverley Hughes would ahve an opinion about this on thursday?

I will be writing to my MP. LibDem though, and already bf positive.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 22/05/2007 18:23

How can anyone ????

I just cant express how angry and saddened I feel.

singingmum · 22/05/2007 18:24

They are idiots.
How can they allow some of the trash they do let stay and yet are happy to seperate a parent and her children.Unbelievable

LongDistanceClara · 22/05/2007 18:30

MP, I think she bloody ought to have an opinion on that.

God, the poor woman! Separating a mother from her 4wo is inhuman.

Jacanne · 22/05/2007 18:32

How dreadful

LongDistanceClara · 22/05/2007 18:33

I've asked the question on the Live Events thread.

kiskidee · 22/05/2007 20:09

the fucking bastards.

hayes · 22/05/2007 20:12

agree it is a sad thing to happen, but has anyone thought about the consequences of leaving the children with her if she needs to be detained under the mental health act?

akaJamiesMum · 22/05/2007 20:21

This makes me so cross. Even in the case of children abused by the parents there is almost always a contact order made if the children are removed to foster care. Yet this mother is denied even that. Disgusting.

fishie · 22/05/2007 20:24

but hayes she wasn't sectioned, being in a cell under 'place of safety' for a few days is very different to being hospitalised.

it is a fucking outrage.

shonaspurtle · 22/05/2007 20:25

Hayes, thats what they used to think about women with PND - now we know that separating a mother from her new baby is bad for both of them.

OP posts:
akaJamiesMum · 22/05/2007 20:25

If the Mum is truly ill and living on the streets then yes the children need to be cared for but she should still have regular contact with them. This is where Mother and Baby units come in - but of course - they are few and far between.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 22/05/2007 20:32

and denying her use of a breastpump.
she must be in agony, emotionally and physically.

Jenkeywoo · 22/05/2007 20:48

This is horrendous, makes me feel so sad and angry. We claim to live in a civilised country but that sickens me and is truly barbaric. Not even being allowed a breast pump is awful.

Beanfrog · 23/05/2007 09:15

It's barbaric. I can't imagine how it feels to be told you are going to be deported without your children. The poor women is only 18 as well

Black Womens Rape Action Project are supporting her fight to get her children back. There are contact details of the relevant people to write in support oh her case available through them.

mm22bys · 23/05/2007 16:50

I could only read some of the article, I could not believe that it is happening in this country.

Absolutely shocking.

belgo · 23/05/2007 16:52

that's awful.
