This country is a disgrace

She was found sleeping rough with depression so they chucked her kids into care and stuck her in a detention centre. But it's ok because she's a failed asylum seeker.

Cazee and I will be visiting Janipher and the kids at 2pm today.

theUrbanDryad · 29/05/2007 12:05

tell her there are many thinking of her. xx

shonaspurtle · 29/05/2007 12:05

Please tell her that there are a lot of people on her side and apologise for the treatment she has received in our name .

cazee · 29/05/2007 17:25

Just got back from visiting Janipher, and she is very agitated. It is horrific what she has been through. I can't see how her little daughter, or 4 week old baby, will survive if she is left destitute on the streets of Uganda, so please write on her behalf.
Also, found out today that bf mothers in immigration detention centres are entitled to only one pair of breast pads a day! Thrush here we come...

shonaspurtle · 29/05/2007 17:52

Cazee, do you think it would be worth starting another thread about what you saw today and how urgent this is? I know a lot of people avoid Breast & Bottle threads.

OP posts:
morgangee · 29/05/2007 18:12

Don't forget they are only allowed one sanitary pad a day as well... even if it's post birth...

Or that she and the toddler had had no breakfast, as she couldn't carry them down in time...

Or that she's worried sick they are throwing her on a plane on Thursday, without her kids... and doesn't want to be beaten when she refuses as if they grab tables or doors, to stop themselves being dragegd out, the guards are allowed to punch their hands and kick their arms, to make them let go...

I'm off to throw up.

Morgan

theUrbanDryad · 29/05/2007 18:18

Morgan - I have a box of breast pads she is welcome to. Likewise with maternity pads. Email me if you want them, i'll bring them when i come.

princessmel · 29/05/2007 18:26

This is just so awful and sad
How do you know of her situation morgan? Is it your job?

HollyGoHeavily · 29/05/2007 18:37

Hi - this case makes my blood boil, how can we treat people like this???

I've just sent this email to Liam Byrne and Meg Munn.

Thanks to MissGolightly - i pinched your first two paragraphs as I didn't think I could improve on what you had written. Hope you don't mind .

Dear Mr Byrne,

I was horrified to read the recent Guardian report on the plight of the Ugandan asylum-seeker Janipher Maseko, separated from her 4-week old son while she was still breastfeeding. (?Deportee Separated from Breastfeeding Son?, Guardian, 22nd May 2007)

Aside from the inhumanity of separating a mother and her newborn baby, the fact that she was a breastfeeding mother only adds unnecessary physical pain and suffering to the intense psychological distress she must already have been under.

I urge you to:

  1. End the inhumane practice of separating mothers from their children, especially those still breastfeeding.

  2. Immediately release, house, support and grant asylum to Ms Maseko and her children.

  3. Conduct a prompt independent investigation into her treatment by SERCO and all those in authority who were responsible for her care.

Yours sincerely,

HollyGoHeavily

Furrymummy · 29/05/2007 18:41

Words can't describe how I feel about this. I cannot believe that someone so vulnerable could be so appallingly treated - ffs are we back in Medieval times or what .
I shall write a letter and fax it to the MPs listed below.
Keep it bumped!!!

franch · 29/05/2007 18:59

I started a separate thread about this but will switch to this one - just important to keep bumping and getting people to email

morgangee · 29/05/2007 19:21

When the Black Woman's Rape Action Project sent out an alert, that Janipher had contacted them from Yarl's Wood and told them her babies had been removed, they emailed the local La Leche League group for breastfeeding support advice.

The local leader, sent it on to me, as last time I'd been asked to drive baby supplies up to Yarl's Wood, by them, for a mother who'd arrived with no clothes, I said I'd set up a support group for pregnant women and nursign mothers in asylum, to get things like sanitary pads and breast pads.

Well, I got half way into setting the support group up - Nursing Matters - and my computer blew up and we never all got back to finishing it and getting up and running.

So she emailed me, to alert me, and see if I could help. As I'm four miles from Yarl's Wood,a nd home all day takign care fo my disabled husband and my two year old... I just ended up being the local contact point.

So it went from an email, to takign over my life, in the past week.

And the thigns I've seen and heard abut in the last week.... I'm ashamed to be British.

There was a women taken for deportation a few weeks back, and the guards stripped her naked and beat her to make her let go of doors. They threw her in the back fo the van,a nd turned up at the airport, with her still naked and bleeding. The pilot of the plane, refused to take her on board, without clothes. So they threw her back i the van - still naked, and drove her back to Yarl's Wood. Where it took them three hours to call a Dr, for her cuts and bruises were 'superficial'.

No, I'm not making it up. :-(

I'm just so ashamed.... I knew things were difficult for asylum women... I had no idea... I'm just so ashamed...

Morgan

theUrbanDryad · 29/05/2007 19:27

Oh. My. God.

Is there any way we can stop Janipher being deported on Thurs? is she definitely being deported??

SugaryBits · 29/05/2007 19:31

This is beyond awful. I am composing an E-mail now and have forwarded the information onto my friends.
I can't believe things like this are actually happening in today's society!

morgangee · 29/05/2007 19:40

Top lawyers are acting to prevent the removal.

We still have no word. I'll update you as and when we know.

franch · 29/05/2007 20:07

Just bumping again to see if we can get more people to email

franch · 29/05/2007 20:09

I can well believe it morgangee, shocked as I am. Bloody hell, the things that go on in this country. Makes you feel so powerless.

princessmel · 29/05/2007 20:16

pampam · 29/05/2007 20:50

vesela · 29/05/2007 21:58

I've emailed Liam Byrne for starters. Thanks for everything you're doing, Morgan.

cazee · 29/05/2007 22:17

franch, thank you for starting that other thread with the e-mail addresses. If anyone hasn't yet sent the e-mails please, please do so now, she is due to be deported on Friday. Below is a copy of the message I sent to all the people on Franch's list. If you don't want to write your own message then please at least copy and paste this one, the more e-mails sent the better. Wouldn't it be nice for people power to win here?

I am writing on behalf of Janipher Maseko, a young 18 year old girl being held in Yarlswood detention centre. People all over the country have been shocked by her treatment. I appeal to you to do all you can to ensure that she and her children be immediately released, housed, supported and granted asylum, and that there be a prompt independent investigation into her treatment by SERCO and all those in authority who were responsible for her care.
