9 week old with green VINEGARY poop!! 1 very graphic and gross picture included

Hi all... Just wondering if this is normal really...

Ds is 9 weeks Friday he has had a cold for the past 2 weeks or so.. Got so bad that he was hospitalised 6/12-8/12 for bronchiolitis.. Anyway he has since had normal yellow/mustard poos (he's ebf - when in hospital he had to have Ng (tube in nose) feeds) but recently the poos have become progressively more green and stringy (I know they change colour) my problem is the smell - it really is offensively vinegary! It hurts my nose... Is it normal for it to smell like this - I keep thinking the tube may have irritated his little tum and that's why it smells as bad as it does but surely that would have started while he was in hospital... Anyway apologies for the picture but just want to have peace of mind x

Is he snacking (lots of quick sips) rather than having fewer long feeds?

How do I help him..?? I breastfed my DD for 19 months and I've never had this happen to me before..

Have you changed your diet.
Looks like lactose intolerance poo my dd had.

That looks like cmpa/mspi poo to me. I would look into it if block feeding doesn't resolve the issue.

Did he have antibiotics in hospital? That can upset their tummies a bit (just like adults). Were you discharged with an open access number to call the pediatric ward of you have any follow up issues? Maybe give them, or failing that, NHS direct or your gp a quick call. It will almost certainly resolve itself, but worth checking.

OP - move this thread to the infant feeding board for sound advice.

Green poo is incredibly common and just means that the milk was digested more quickly than normal. The most common cause is a virus. Unless there are other symptoms - is baby distressed, running a fever, not eating, not gaining weight, etc.? - then it's not a cause for concern.

If there are other symptoms, or if it lasts for weeks, go see your GP.

I should say that when he was tube fed he was fed with my milk which I loathed having to express!! and his poop was a lovely mustard normal yellow... We are now a week and a day out of hospital... It doesn't make sense to me for it to be an intolerance or an allergy (although I will speak to hv about it Monday??) x

Too much foremilk? Also make sure you're not having too much dairy in your diet. Citrus can also be a culprit. I can remember my son having mustardy looking poos, but I think that was earlier on that 9 weeks.

Ds not distressed no fever... he was fairly poorly with the bronchiolitis and that I should expect it to last 2/3 weeks I just wasnt expecting this lol

Please please don't worry about trying to artificially engineer feeds to try and get "hind" milk, it isn't as simple as that. (Google foremilk hindmilk myth if you're interested). If you feed on demand and offer the other side when your baby seems to have lost interest in the current side, then that's fine. If you have oversupply then block feeding may help, but you haven't mentioned anything like that.

If he seems otherwise well then green poo isn't an issue, particularly if he's recently been unwell as PP has mentioned.

Really don't worry about the fore milk/ hind milk thing:
The imbalance idea only really applies in cases of oversupply, and is often overstated. If there is a long time between feeds, leading to very full breasts, the milk produced earlier in the feed will have a higher water content, to keep baby hydrated. If a baby only gets this, the green poo occurs.
There is no point in a feed at which foremilk switches to hind milk, think of it more as a gradual increase in fatty content throughout a feed.
If your little one is snacking, then he will be getting the fat rich milk, because there hasn't been hours between feeds for the lower fat milk to build up.
Vinegary poo is a very common effect of a virus or tummy bug, and generally resolves as little one feels better - just keep creaming his bum to stop him getting sore.
If it persists long beyond other illnesses, then it might be worth ruling out other tummy bugs.
Green poo is only concerning if it occurs in combination with eg illnes, weight loss etc.

I had an oversupply issue... Since or at least I thought eradicated. Didn't mention because I didn't think it was relevant at around week 3/4)... How could it have come back?? (I think I know - bloody expressing every 2 hours for his feeds in the hosp!!) - back to square one I guess x

As others have said, don't worry about fore and hind milk. My two had nappies like that sometimes. Usually a virus or teething. Sometimes just one of those things. It will most likely resolve on its own and as long as he's well otherwise, it's no cause for concern. If it doesn't resolve or you note other symptoms, get checked.

I don't think you should worry about the possibility of over supply. Now you're not expressing, it should settle down back to a level that's being demanded. If you feed on demand and offer the next side when he seems to have finished on one side, then you can't go far wrong.

Has he had 8 weeks vaccination recently? My DS2 had green poos after 8 and 12 weeks vaccinations. I've heard it can be related to rotovirus vaccine. But I don't think it smelled badly.
I suggest contacting GP if unsure. In general, occasional green poo is fine, but considering his medical history, it doesn't harm checking with medical professionals.
