9 week old with green VINEGARY poop!! 1 very graphic and gross picture included

Hi all... Just wondering if this is normal really...

Ds is 9 weeks Friday he has had a cold for the past 2 weeks or so.. Got so bad that he was hospitalised 6/12-8/12 for bronchiolitis.. Anyway he has since had normal yellow/mustard poos (he's ebf - when in hospital he had to have Ng (tube in nose) feeds) but recently the poos have become progressively more green and stringy (I know they change colour) my problem is the smell - it really is offensively vinegary! It hurts my nose... Is it normal for it to smell like this - I keep thinking the tube may have irritated his little tum and that's why it smells as bad as it does but surely that would have started while he was in hospital... Anyway apologies for the picture but just want to have peace of mind x

Another one suggesting cows milk protein intolerance.

My 17 month old has this ( need to try milk ladder again) and I remember telling people her poos weren't normal as they were green, vinegary and full of mucous/stringy bits.

We ended up in hospital with her where cmpi was suggested and I've been dairy free ever since, though I can have dark chocolate, bourbon biscuits and rich tea biscuits!

Sometimes even a tiny amount of dairy can upset them so if it is that, you may need to exclude all dairy and even soya if you want to keep bf.

Doublebubblebubble · 16/12/2015 20:45

daluze he's not had his vaccinations yet as because he's been poorly I was advised to push it back a wee bit (he's having them on 30/12 - so 10 weeks(ish) I will look out for it after he has them though...

*Beaufort I dont drink alcohol (i never have really) but I do drink 2 cups of coffee a day (very weak milky coffee 1/2 a tsp if that) I will watch out whether stopping will have an effect.

My health visitor is coming on Monday so I will definitely have a word with her. I'm not sure its a gp issue just yet as ds is well in himself, good colour, gaining weight well - didn't lose much even when he was really poorly (got him weighed Monday (8 weeks 3) and he is/was 14lb8 - so just under the 98th centile) obviously if anything changes Il get him seen sooner (I am a panicky mum and I'm trying not to be as much)

Oh and I definitely want to continue bf for as long as I can xx

Just a query - if it is a dairy intolerance wouldn't he be having pain, a rash something else to indicate it??

OP posts:
daluze · 16/12/2015 21:27

Glad to hear he is feeling well otherwise - from what I understand, green poo is only a problem if in combination with other symptoms. Otherwise, dr. Newmann suggests mums to wear sunglasses when changing nappy!

MingZillas · 16/12/2015 22:22

My dd had terrible reflux and a tiny patch of dry skin on her thigh. When I cut out the dairy, the reflux reduced but we still needed omeprazole for her, and the dry skin went.

I started eating dairy and soya again when she was about 8 months old and the symptoms came back.

It's been bloody horrible. We can't put cheese on things for her so have a bit of a picky eater now as well!

Good luck with things. I found mn and the Internet invaluable when I was going through this with dd. I just knew something wasn't right Flowers

TheSecondViola · 16/12/2015 22:30

Did someone above seriously suggest it could be lactose intolerance from the dairy in ops diet Hmm ?
There is more lactose in human milk than cows milk.
Neither is there any reason to suspect cmpi or any dairy intolerance here. Green poo is very common, so is a vinegary smell after illness or various medications.

If you are concerned please see a professional and don't take ill informed advice from the internet.

Doublebubblebubble · 17/12/2015 09:40

Well this was a bit of a bust of a thread anyway as all of his poos have gone back to normal disgusting yellow.( since about midnight last night and all this morning -xfingers-) He must have just had a tummy bug/be getting over the bronchiolitis bug. Thanks for the advice ladies xx

My baby boy pooed like this until he was diagnosed with a cows milk protein allergy, they stank like vinegar and were green, sometimes stringy and mucuosy!

All babies are affected by allegries differently, some have rashes and pain other just digestive issues.

I had to exclude all diary from his diet, including 'hidden' and baked milk products. Also soya and tomatoes affect him too.

tiktok · 17/12/2015 10:07

Glad all is well :)

I know people try to help....but cmpi and lactose intolerance and 'too much foremilk' and too much of X or Y or Z in the mothers's diet????

All highly unlikely, and really not diagnosable at all from the OP's post and her pic :(

I s'pose that's the trouble with the internet :) :)

My DD had green poo when she had a cold. As pp said, I think it is related to having a virus.

tiktok · 17/12/2015 14:27

Whoops, sorry about my multi-posting there Blush

GinandJag · 17/12/2015 20:35

Why would a breastfed baby have cows' milk protein allergy?

P1nkP0ppy · 17/12/2015 20:43

They wouldn't GinandJag. Totally impossible, and definitely highlights the danger of Internet diagnosing!
DD had nappies like this and it was due to over feeding. Wasn't a problem, sorted itself out after a few days.

GinandJag · 17/12/2015 20:47

Mine all had a phase of green nappies for two or three weeks. Snacking was a realistic cause. There were no ill effects - they all thrived and met developmental milestones. None of them had viral infections. That's five children.

TheEagle · 17/12/2015 20:48

Sometimes green poos can emerge during growth spurts when babies feed more.

I think green poos are only really a worry in the first few weeks and thereafter if they are associated with poor weight gain or other symptoms.

Glad all is back to normal in the nappy department OP.

Definitely post here in Infant Feeding for sound BF advice.

Kellymom (www.kellymom.com) is also an excellent evidence-based source of information.

Congrats on your baby Flowers

AlanPacino · 17/12/2015 21:05

My ds had these poos on and off while he was breast fed. I remember the distinct vinegary whiff. From my experience it's just one of those things and nothing to worry about.

Allyoucaneat · 17/12/2015 23:05

Of course breastfed babies can have a cows milk allergy. It passes through the breastmilk due to what mum has eaten.

Doublebubblebubble · 18/12/2015 07:33

Thank you all.

He has been fine again this morning too. Yellow poops. Genuinely believe it to be a just a viral thing. Although i believe that breastfed babies could have an i or a to lactose through milk i just dont believe its the case here. I do think that he is having a growth spurt too snacking a lot between feeds! my poor boobs! it seems that lots of babies have green poop for various reasons! X

OP posts:
TheSecondViola · 18/12/2015 14:45

Its not impossible for a breast fed baby to have a cow milk protein allergy. It is unlikely though.
It IS impossible for a breastfed baby to have an intolerance to lactose, whether you believe it or not. Breastmilk is chock full of lactose. Your consumption of other lactose containing foods makes no possible difference to that.

tiktok · 18/12/2015 15:53

However.....congenital lactose intolerance does occur in a tiny, tiny TINY number of babies, and they are unable to tolerate breastmilk at all (because, of course, it contains lactose).

Breastfed babies who have a serious gastric illness can develop a secondary lactose intolerance as a result of the damage to the gut lining. This gets better by itself, usually, and breastfeeding usually helps in the healing.

You are dead right, Viola, to point out that mother's diet has zero to do with the lactose in her milk, which will be there whatever she eats.

I would say the idea that 'cutting out lactose' by the mother is suggested by a poster, or a poster's HV/doc, at least once a week on mumsnet, so it's a common myth.

TheSecondViola · 18/12/2015 16:17

Yes, but I didn't want to confuse further with that one!
