Breast feeding and Caffiene... Your experiences?

I've continued to strictly avoid caffiene while breast feeding but now I'm wondering if I really need to. We're getting a coffee machine for Christmas and I'd rather like to indulge!!

I have a cup in the morning if I want one. After that it's green tea or chamomile. I haven't noticed any il effects.

Ds1 and ds2 absolutely fine on caffeine. I don't go mad but no effect as far as I'm aware. Maybe just introduce it gradually though?

I have a double or triple espresso with milk every morning and haven't noticed any effects on the baby who has been BF for 9 months now.

Initially I avoided caffeine but now at 8 months I have gradually introduced 2-3 cups of coffee a day with no obvious ill effects.

With one of my three I had to avoid all caffeine for the first 6m, because even just one cup of tea or bar of chocolate upset him badly. But after 6m he was fine, and unaffected by my intake. (Still didn't sleep, though Confused)

Caffeine has had absolutely no effect on either baby. I don't drink a huge amount of coffee, but I mainline tea.

Going off at a slight tangent here, but I had to avoid decaf coffee for about the first 8 months. Took me a while to work out that it was causing very screamy, unsettled babies in the evening. Decaf tea was fine though. I can't hack caffeine myself really, so never had much to see if it affected the babies.

I mostly drink decaf tea and coffee anyway, but had a can of Pepsi Max most days with no ill effects. The only thing DD reacted to was cauliflower, and now she's big and eats food she loves it.

I have 1-2 cups a day since DD2's birth. All in the morning so could be a large amount of caffeine. I avoided it with DD1. I also has a glass of wine now and then with dinner. I think I just relaxed with the second Smile

Total of 4 years bf and counting here and have never even thought of restricting caffeine. I didn't know it was a thing!

I have 2 or 3 coffees and 1 or 2 teas every day. How do I tell if It has affected them?

2 cups of a milcano type coffee a day and/or a coffee shop coffee. Baby is the same before/after.
Some react to it others don't I was told, just try it! Xmas Grin

Tea and coffee addict here - no effect on DS whatsoever but am currently 6 days into cold turkey on caffeine just to try to tackle my own bloody insomnia!

I mainlined pepsi max all through pregnancy and the last 6 months of bf. DD seems ok. My teeth on the other hand, not so good!

With DS1 I survived on caffeine and sugar for about a year. Never noticed any problems although he uses to wake every 1.5hr throughout the night every night until I night weaned at 14mo but I think that was just him and fact that I always fed him to sleep so he he no idea how to get back to sleep without boob.

DS2 is 7 weeks old and am back only maternity leave diet of sugar and caffeine. Last couple of weeks he's been increasingly difficult to get to sleep for naps and at bedtime (but still sleeping well at night, and once he is asleep will go 3-4hrs at a time) so at DPs suggestion I've given up caffeine and cut back on chocolate (am dying here....) and I hate to admit it but DS2 does seem like a different baby... Has been more easy to settle for naps and has seemed less overtired/grumpy.

Could be coincidence, could be the caffeine. Am telling DP is coincidence as I'd hate to admit He was right!!!

I don't like coffee but drank tea throughout pregnancy and bf. There's no need to give caffeine up.

Caffeine is fat soluble so it will go into your milk a little bit but there's no official advice to avoid it or cut down. The concentration in milk is tiny, it would be a very sensitive baby who was affected.

I had 3 cups of coffee yesterday (I usually have one per day, as well as 2 tea) and ds was acting strange yesterday evening, wasn't himself at all. Bit fidgety but also just not his happy self, just 'off'. He's 3 months.

My mum the coffee addict was staying so I had them with her without much thought Sad

I'm 100% sure it was the coffee and I was very upset about it. He's 100% back to normal today.

one and my tea make no difference to him whatsoever.
