Why do babies have a favourite boob?

Im currently breastfeeding dd who is coming up to 7 months, and she will not take my right boob - she loves my left though!Grin my ds1 and ds2 were the same with exactly the same side, and now i have to accept that at some point in the next few months dd will stop bfeeding and im going to be left with mega-floppy wonky sized boobs and im only 26, do all babies have a favourite size? if so do all mums have wonky boobs?? Grin

I assumed that dd preferred my left for two reasons ... (a) it always produced more and she could get it more easily; and (b) because when she fed from that side she could hear my heartbeat more clearly.

koolkat · 28/03/2006 14:35

They do ! Mine had a favourite boob, but I kept offering both until he grew to love both Grin

I defo. had one boob bigger than the other even before bf, but it's like feet isn't it ? One is always bigger than the other ?

Kelly1978 · 28/03/2006 14:40

when I had the dts they both had opposite favourite sides, I guess that's what they got used to. The singles all preferred the left tho, I assumed for wwb's reasons.

alexsmum · 28/03/2006 14:43

yes, both my ds's favoured the left boob and that is the biggest now.my midwife said she'd never come across a baby that that didn't have a favourite boob.

Kathy1972 · 28/03/2006 14:53

Because one was vanilla flavoured and the other was white chocolate flavoured.
Or that's what I always imagined Wink

lummox · 28/03/2006 15:11

dh's 93 year old grandmother told me that one tasted sweet and one savoury. i didn't ask how she knew.

she also told me that putting a cinder in a glass of water and giving it to your baby on a spoon would cure wind.

beartime · 28/03/2006 20:33

I'm 26 with wonky boobs too Grin also the left one is bigger hmmmm... I wonder if that position is more comfy for us so they like it better?

dinny · 28/03/2006 20:38

ds loves the left too - it's because it's nearer your heart, I believe.

left boob definitely looks bigger than right, how divine. Grin

snowleopard · 28/03/2006 20:40

Right boob for DS (well he's a contrary sort). For months I walked around with a left giant boulder and a right floppy sock.

fishie · 28/03/2006 20:42

ds much prefers right - but i am left handed, do you think its positioning?

beartime · 28/03/2006 20:48

I think it might be positioning - I always had more trouble getting him into position on the right, whereas left was easy.

Helenemjay · 28/03/2006 21:22

LOL Grin im so glad im not the only one with wonkey boobs then Grin i think positioning must have something to do with it, lol at kathy1972 - my dp said she likes my left side as it must be her favourite flavour! bless her she is almost boycotting my right side altogether now, i tried her just before bed this evening and she outright refused my right and then cuddled up and almost kissed it when i swopped her - i couldnt help but giggle lol Grin

LOL Remember my Ds saying (in baby langauge)"that one's orange' and that one's blackcurrant"!!!! Time to stop!!!Grin

btw. All my Ds's seemed to prefer the left side,

bea · 28/03/2006 21:36

yes both dd and ds preferred left boob... i now have the familiar wonky boobs... poor old right boob is terribley deflated!... i used to think that maybe left boob had bigger 'holes' in so the milk came out quicker!!!!... but i seriously thing i found the positioning much easier when feeding on the left so they were more comfy that way!

i think there maybe a market for bras for wonky boobs... !

NotQuiteCockney · 28/03/2006 21:44

The favourite boob is normally the one that's not on your strong side. So right-handed people have a good left boob, generally, and lefties have a good right boob.

Is that the case for everyone who's posted about their "better" boobs here?

roosmum · 28/03/2006 21:48

nqc, no opposite here, ds favoured right boob & i'm right-handed.

at nearly 14 mths tho, he doesn't seem to mind which one it is these days (i often had to rugby-ball hold him, to get him to take the left one!).

NQC - I hadn't realised that, but yes, DS preferred my left boob and I am right handed.

I actually ended up with a blocked duct in the first few weeks because he wasn't feeding as often on my right boob.

Why is that, is there a scientific reason ?

NotQuiteCockney · 28/03/2006 22:15

Hmm, it could be:

  • the offhand nork is generally bigger, and hence might have better milk production?
  • women (generally) prefer to carry their children on their left (my favourite explanation: this is so the facial expressions and noises of the baby go to the "emotional" right brain, rather than the "logical" left brain), making bf on that side easier?
  • it's nicer to have your good hand free while bf?

Probably it's the first and the second.

shazronnie · 29/03/2006 12:30

I've got a favourite mug for my tea and a favourite glass for my wine ...

anorak · 29/03/2006 12:45

Don't know about babies, I never noticed, but my DH has a favourite! Grin

koolkat · 29/03/2006 13:43

anorak, are you left or right handed ? Grin

beartime · 29/03/2006 14:13

yeah I'm right handed with fav left boob. I just always found it easier to hold him on my left one. Though I do alternate them equally now, but might not have done in earlier months when there were too many to remember and I kept forgetting to reposition the safety pin Blush

JackieNo · 29/03/2006 14:16

Mine changed several times - first it was one side that was favourite, then it changed, and then back again to the first side (sorry - was a while ago, so can't remember which ones). Sounds like I'm alone in that...

faithnirvana · 30/03/2006 08:08

My daughter preferred my left boob. It was always slightly larger before breastfeeding but since I stopped it is now significantly larger (by a whole cup size) than the other. I wish I had forced her to feed from the right more often. I think it was because I was supporting her with my right arm which felt more comfortable for me and therefore for her.
