Extended breastfeeding - over two year old. Anyone?

Feeling really alone at the mo, anyone else feeding an over two-year old? DS is 28 months and still boob-obsessed which is fine in my opinion (for us).

Went to an 'extended breastfeeders' group today and it was for babies over 6 months! Not my idea of extended lol

And if there is anyone out there does your LO do anything erm bizarre with your boobs whilst feeding? DS has taken to feeding off one and sticking the other in his ear oh god I can't believe I admitted that!

Only thinh i don't like about feeding dd whilst i am pg is that my nipples are sooo sensitive and sore.It makes the initial latch toe curlingly painful.Have started to say open your mouth wide and all that so she gets a bigger mouthful.Am hoping it goes away soon but not sure whether it will.Anyone else bf while pg and did you have any problems?

Papillon · 25/02/2006 13:21

yes defo more sore, but dd did not feed every day... not all that interested cos not alot of milk - I kept the feeds shorter

bundle · 25/02/2006 13:23

dd2 is starting to wean herself very slowly..she has an occasional bf in the mornings, and she will be 3 in april. dd1 was weaned at 23 mths, just before i got pregnant for the second time. just do whatever makes you happy.

zaphod · 25/02/2006 14:07

ds4 will be 3 in July, and feeds morning, afternoon, bed-time, and once or twice at night. I would happily have him give up the nigt-time feeds so I could have a whole nights sleep but apart from that I'm not bothered.

It is VERY unusual to still breastfeed here, but bf rates are low in Ireland anyway.

Highlander · 25/02/2006 16:12

I'm still BFing DS, who is nearly 18mo. I'm preggers, so it hurts a bit (bizarre very strong let-down reflex again).

I'm hoping to cut out the night feeds soon (too tired). If he still wants to feed during the day, that's fine.

Does anyone have any info on the risk of inducing early labour if you BF?

agalch · 25/02/2006 19:32

Highlander, when are you due? Just wondered if i was suddenly really sore bf because of how many weeks pg i am. I was really sore at the start then ok for a while and now really sore again. Im 19 weeks tomorrow.

drosophila · 25/02/2006 19:43

Zaphod my Irish mother is totally shocked I am still breasfeeding (dd is 13 months). Probably more accurate to say disgusted. What are the bfing rates like in Ireland?

Hi Wangle99, isn't it nice to find out you are not alone! I am tandemfeeding my ds1 (26 months) and ds2 (10wks). When ds1 was born I thought I would feed for 6 months at least, and for as long as we both still enjoyed it after... Well, he's 26 months now, and still is showing no signs of wanting to wean any time soon. In fact, he is (fortunately!!) just cutting down again, after going slightly "crazy" after the birth of his little brother: he did a demand-feed every 2hrs for the first couple of weeks, v.exhausting... He's now down to 3 feeds a day.
Highlander + agalch, i was only sore at beginning of pregnancy, but had extreme sickness (all through). i don't know about inducing early labour by bf-ing: i went to 41wks!
MummyPig, is that kellymom you're talking about (extended nursing group), or do you know a group in uk?? if you do, i'd like to know as well .

harpsichordcarrier · 25/02/2006 21:50

what a lovely thread
I fed all through my pg and delivered on my due date highlander

LucyJu · 25/02/2006 22:06

Only managed 18 months with dd1; up to 3 1/2 months now with dd2.
Just wanted to say well done to you!

spidermama · 25/02/2006 22:29

Highlander I fed throughout my second and third pregnancies and there was no problem about early labour. I think the nipple tweaking only really works if you're ready to go into labour anyway.

I remember it's a bit tender when you're pg though eh? But It was great to be able to feed the toddler and have that special time with them and really helped the toddler when the baby arrived.

MummyPig · 27/02/2006 13:50

hi there all, the group is UK based (although I know there's at least one Canadian mum on it) and last year they had a meetup in Oxford, which I couldn't make. I can CAT you with details if you like. You'll have to fill in a questionnaire and I think your first posts might be 'vetted', which seems fair enough to me.

MummyPig · 03/03/2006 14:20

wangle99 and honneybunny, haven't been able to send you the details of group as your settings say won't accept CAT - maybe you could contact me instead if still interested? Tatties, have sent details to you

koolkat · 03/03/2006 16:16

Breastfeeding my 20 month old son. He is not 2 years old yet, but I know that we will go on for a long time to come.

I don't think I will continue bf when he is at school though. Despite being a bf militant Grin, I do not wish to have him bullied at school because he is still at his mother's breasts.

There is enough for him to deal with in the "big bad world" once he is at school and I do not think that in a society where extended bf is seen as done by the lunatic fringe, I will be doing my son any favours if I still bf when he is 5 years old.

Hate to say that eventually I may have to cave into society's small-mindedness Sad

koolkat · 03/03/2006 16:20

mummypig - I am a member of LLL too. Yes, LLL is very good for women still feeding toddlers.

What is the discussion group you mentioned ?

Can you send me details please ? I think you can use the CAT thing with me ?

lailag · 03/03/2006 16:28

Agree with the sore bit whilest pg. Milk production seemed to have stopped as well since PG but DD (3 in 3 weeks)doesn't want to stop it though...

Mumbojumbo · 03/03/2006 16:49

Hiya

DS2 is 28 months and still breastfeeding. Shows no sign of wanting to give up either :-) I fed ds1 until he was 3 years old.

Funnily enough, I get a few raised eyebrows and comments along the lines of: "You're not still feeding are you?"

Anyway, we're happy!

honneybunny · 03/03/2006 16:55

MummyPig, I have changed my profile, so I can accept cat-s now. Could you try again? TIA

Adorabelle · 03/04/2006 18:14

My LO is 22months &is totally Boob obsessed! She would feed all day everyday if i let her.I still feed her on demand &that can get tiring but the joy and benefits we both get from it far outway feeling abit tired sometimes. She also co sleeps &feeds on/off all night, but she wont be doing that forever So i'm savouring each day of the breastfeeding cos i'll never get them back when there gone.Well done you Wanle99,you're doing GR8!!!

buffythenappyslayer · 03/04/2006 18:19

my dd is also boob obsessed!shes 20 months and proudly shouts in the middle of tescos 'BOOBY NOW!!!' whilst yanking my top up or down!i do want to stop, but every time i try,i feel guilty for wanting my boobs back!keep thinking that as long as she is happy,it doesnt matter, but she also co sleeps and feeds regularly during the night (although i think this is purely for comfort now)but during the day she'd be as happy as a pig in sh*t if i was to sit there all day with my boobs out so she could have them constantly!!

Adorabelle · 03/04/2006 18:25

My dd is exactly the same buffy. She is never happier than when she is having her "num nums" Please dont feel guilty bout wanting your boobs back,i feel like that too some days. I'm very for baby led weaning but i think feeding a toddler only works if you both want &enjoy it. Do whats right for you &your LO.

buffythenappyslayer · 03/04/2006 18:30

we are ttc and it gets abit hard to get down to nookie when all you hear is 'boobies mummy' in a little voice!!
ive been trying to distract her when she starts asking, and her dietician had now prescribed supplements as she is only small (she has cf),so trying to get her to have these bloody milkshakes when all she wants is a booby,is a nightmare!

buffythenappyslayer · 03/04/2006 18:33

also dd twiddles my nips when shes feeding!she'll be on one side and her hand wanders to the other and she twiddles it!!Blushshe also comes off the boob whilst feeding and has a look and laughs at my nipple saying 'ah,booby' and kisses it!also if she hears anything on tv,she takes nipple with her!ouch!!dh barged in yesterday when she was feeding and kept saying he was going to get booby,dd screamed at him, slapped him and said with teeth gritted 'no mine!'

Adorabelle · 03/04/2006 18:35

Feel for you buffy,my dd won't touch milk unless it comes from me.
