I hate it when people refer to "the breast"

As in

"put baby on the breast".
"When baby is at the breast"

Feeeeeeech - it really makes my toes curl, like they no longer belong to the woman who has them.

I hate the word 'breast' full stop because it just makes me think of chicken breast!!

mandymac · 14/01/2006 19:25

hmmm - yes I know what you mean. I like 'nork' (thanks to mumsnet for that one 0. Or boob, but got really cross with my mum when she referred to it (with reference to feeding dd) as 'the tit' .

edam · 14/01/2006 19:27

Oh, me too. When I was going back to work my mother asked me 'have you weaned him off the breast yet?' For some reason it made me squirm.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 14/01/2006 19:29

But it is a breast....

What would you rather it was called?

Tinker · 14/01/2006 19:34

But better than boob surely????

TeddyRobinson · 14/01/2006 19:35

Bazookas?

milward · 14/01/2006 19:35

What's wrong with breast?

Aloha · 14/01/2006 19:35

nork is good

gigglinggoblin · 14/01/2006 19:37

'breast' is very formal. i like to think i am on better terms with mine than that mine are usually boobs

TeddyRobinson · 14/01/2006 19:37

Baps?

TeddyRobinson · 14/01/2006 19:37

ggg - that's just what I was going to say (but decided to be silly instead - sorry!) - it sound formal and anatomical (which it is of course), I dunno, just don't like it.

Tinker · 14/01/2006 19:40

We had a nun at school who used to blush when required to say (in History lessons) Brest.

I don't really understand what the problem is. I would much prefer people refered to them as what they are than made up names. Its the same with penis and vagina. I can't stand the thousand and one names people use for them. You wouldn't call you leg by any other name - or your arm. So why your breast?

There'sa no need for that sort of language IlanaK.

WigWamBam · 14/01/2006 20:07

It's the "the" that grates with me too - so impersonal. It's not "the" breast, it's "my" breast.

moondog · 14/01/2006 20:10

Oh God yes Pagan!!
Amso with you on that.
As if there is a huge communal one for all infants of the world (rather like the one that lumbered after Woody Allen in one of his films when he was funny.)

popsycalindisguise · 14/01/2006 20:11

agree WWB

suzi2 · 14/01/2006 20:22

makes me think of food. And yes - it's the 'the' that bothers me too. Much prefer norks or boobs. Greatly prefer boobies - makes them seem more childish and humerous.

You can't call a penis a penis! You could call your arm an 'upper limb' though couldn't you?

notasheep · 14/01/2006 20:45

In our house they have always been boobies too!

NotQuiteCockney · 14/01/2006 20:55

We say "boob". But yeah, the "the" is very formal and weird.

Imagine: ok, when the penis is inside the vagina.

loopyredangel · 15/01/2006 01:04

I call mine bed and breakfast! DS eats and sleeps on them!

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 15/01/2006 01:11

jetlagdZebra · 15/01/2006 02:30
