Is it better to smoke and BF (obviously not at the same time) or give formula??

does that mean you do consider yourself to be a tosser though?

hercules · 17/12/2005 14:06

took me a moment to get that one!

Glitterygook · 17/12/2005 14:08

I think I just misunderstood the question and therefore, to me, it looked as though the majority of responses were saying 'it doesn't matter if you smoke, just whatever you do, don't give formula' - my mistake.

So, I'm being a bit thick here, but what is the question then? Why would you not breastfeed if you wanted to just because you smoke?

hercules · 17/12/2005 14:08

people worry about how much gets into the milk.

tamum · 17/12/2005 14:09

I don't think the question was pointless, though, I assumed that the question was whether there would be chemicals from smoking in breast milk which would make it worse than formula. I don't think there's any evidence for that, but it was a reasonable question.

Dino, I'm with you about a lot of MN threads these days.

Glitterygook · 17/12/2005 14:11

Oh, I see. Fair enough, I misunderstood.

Btw, I don't want a medal or anything but despite perhaps sometimes coming across as 'a sanctimonioius tosser', I am quite willing to admit my mistake or see another point of view - I do have strong opinions on some things but I'm quite happy to learn another one. I hope that's clear.

Here you go

"you do what you have to do to get by with kids. It is hard work."

well bloody AMEN to that

that should be the end of the bottle/breast debate for good and all!

hercules · 17/12/2005 14:12

Of course it is. Happens lots of times here. You read a thread and slightly misunderstand it, leap in with strong comments just for someone to point out to you the other side.

Glitterygook · 17/12/2005 14:14

Hehehe - thanks!

tamum · 17/12/2005 14:14

You're welcome

suzi2 · 17/12/2005 19:53

Not quite what you were asking fatfairy, but if you wanted to quit I would recommend the Allen Carrs Easyway book. I reckon it brainwashed me because I went from 10-20 a day to nothing without any struggle.

fatfairy · 18/12/2005 20:36

the advice I was after (clearly, I failed to get my message across!) was more to do with nicotine passing into the breastmilk and the effect on the baby. For the record, I don't have a smoky house, I don't smoke around my baby, only when she is in bed and only out the kitchen window
