Is it better to smoke and BF (obviously not at the same time) or give formula??

God,me too rickman!

Mercy, are you asking why I was fed up??
I just was.....pregnancy and tiny babies spell major deprivation of all sorts to me. I'm not very mumsy at all.

Mercy · 16/12/2005 23:12

ok Rickman - why do you feel you will be on the top shelf for evermore?

Mercy · 16/12/2005 23:15

Moondog - I thought you were really mumsy. Fab cook and all that. Blimey

FrostyTheRickman · 16/12/2005 23:15

Because I've got 4 kids under 8, I never go anywhere, I need to lose some weight, I'm definitely not improving with age etc etc

moondog · 16/12/2005 23:16

Not really...despite all that.
There is a wild Southern beer drinkin' truck drivin' guitar twangin' rock chick underneath my domesticated Celtic persona lol!

Mercy · 16/12/2005 23:31

Moondog - hahaha! Go girl

Rickman - so what? I thought a fling meant sex no strings - is that what yu want or a companion?
Look I must go to bed will catch up later. best wishes

FrostyTheRickman · 16/12/2005 23:33

Not sure what I want, or even if I want anything. Doesn't alter the fact that nothing is happening anyway though and I can't see things changing in the future.

moondog · 16/12/2005 23:35

I think you'll be surprised rickman.

Is anyone doing what they envisaged 5 years ago??? I'm not.

TinselMunkerWentToGlitteryLand · 16/12/2005 23:46

I'm not. Five years ago, I was three years down the line from being told I'd never have children. So major changes v possible, Rickman

FrostyTheRickman · 16/12/2005 23:47

Well I'm not either but I really do think this is it for me. Luckily, it doesn't bother me at the moment but I can see me being very lonely one day in the future.

I read in a parenting mag the other day (waiting at the dentist) that if you do smoke and breastfeed then smoke outside and have a jacket or coat that you wear when smoking and take off when finished ... before picking up the baby. That way you protect your clothes a little bit more from the smoke toxins that do stay on your clothes and that the baby can still inhale ...
My ex SIL used to smoke and breastfeed at the same time . But then I know someone who didn't breastfeed just so that she could smoke . I (as an ex smoker) understand how hard it is to give up and the best thing you are doing for your baby is breastfeeding .... (while shielding her as much as you can from the smoke)

Glitterygook · 17/12/2005 12:05

I disagree personally and think smoking is the most hideous thing in the world. I think that smoking around children does them far more harm than giving them formula.

And saying you don't go outside to do it blah blah, that doesn't matter cos you still stink to high heaven when you come back in and breathe it over the baby. Bleurgh. It's rank. My in-laws don't smoke in my house when they visit but they reek of it anyway - clothes and breath. It's disgusting.

Glitterygook · 17/12/2005 12:06

Sorry, saying you DO go outside to do it...

hercules · 17/12/2005 13:09

But that wasnt the question. THe question was whether it is better for the baby if a smoker (who doesnt smoke around the baby) bf or gives formula.

The answer is simply that it's better for the baby to have bm from a smoker than it is to have formula. It's not about what you think of smoking or formula.

FrostytheRickman · 17/12/2005 13:43

Blimey GDG, I didn't realise you had such a low opinion of me! Smoking isn't the most hideous thing in the world, it certainly isn't the nicest but I can think of loads of things that are more hideous.

DinosaurInAManger · 17/12/2005 13:52

What utter rubbish. Of course there are many many many more hideous things in the world than smoking. Get some perspective.

You do what you have to do, don't you. I was smoking for a few months while I was breastfeeding and co-sleeping with DS2. My life was really shitty at that point, for reasons I won't bore you with now. But certainly both misdee and rickman don't need any extra shit being thrown at them.

Grrrrrrrr!!!

hercules · 17/12/2005 13:54

you do what you have to do to get by with kids. It is hard work.

DinosaurInAManger · 17/12/2005 13:55

Exactly, hercules. You are such a voice of sanity on a mumsnet which I just think is getting increasingly full of sanctimonious tossers.

spacedonkey · 17/12/2005 13:56

hear hear dinosaur

hercules · 17/12/2005 13:57

Yes, I've noticed that too. I had a long break and came back recently. It seems there are an awful lot of threads with posters pouncing on others.

DinosaurInAManger · 17/12/2005 13:58

Glad it isn't just me who feels like this.

Glitterygook · 17/12/2005 14:02

Oh sorry, I read the original question as 'is it better to be a smoker and breastfeed than be a non-smoker and give formula' - otherwise, the question is pointless and might as well say 'is it better to breastfeed or formula feed' the answer to which is obvious.

I thought the lesser of the two 'evils' was formula, rather than smoking.

Sorry, I do think smoking is hideous - I hate it, BUT I do understand that it can be addiction and it's not all that easy to stop. Sorry for causing offence, my post was a bit harsh.

Mercy · 17/12/2005 14:04

As a newbie poster but long term lurker I'm relieved to see the last few comments

Glitterygook · 17/12/2005 14:04

I'm not a sanctimonious tosser though - I have nothing to be sanctimonious about - I ain't perfect! Far from it!

baublerock · 17/12/2005 14:04

I think it's just called a discussion . Just because someone has a strong opinion of something doesn't mean they shouldn't post - as long as it's not a direct insult to someone, obviously.

I think Fatfairy is being very conscientious (sp?) by trying to get advice on this and you're right she didn't ask for any opinions on smoking/formula but that doesn't mean people aren't allowed to give them!
