If you bottle fed your baby........

What formula did you use and what food likes or dislikes do your childrean have now?

The reason I ask is that after a thread the other day, "What's the best Formula", alot of people said how they had actually tried it themselves. Aptimil, Hipp Organic and Cow and Gate came up as the best as people said it tasted creamier and the likes of other brands like SMA were quite bitter.

I fed my dd SMA Gold. It wasn't a educated decision. I was adamant I was going to be BF but due to a myseterious lack of milk and an inverted nipple , I couldn't. I had to establish feeding before we were to be discharged from hospital and I found that SMA Gold was the more popular formula on the ward, therefore thats what I used.

What I'm wondering is if the SMA is quite bitter, would this have have had an effect on dd's taste buds and would it have made a difference to what she likes today?

What do you think?

Do you think this

DS had SMA from 4 months or so

he eats whatever .. except for potatoes and cheese .. loves prawns, curry, pasta, meat etc

find it weird that adults can taste formula and comment .. surely it is their taste-buds that are biased .. breastmilk changes taste dependent on what mother has eaten

NewBethlehemGirlwithsparkles · 13/12/2005 13:54

Ah true about breast milk. Didn't think about that.

DS2 had SMA - because that's what DH bought at 2am in Tesco when I sent him off there when BF wasn't working out.

DS2 eats anything - and has always been a good eater

DS1 now eats anything - but used to be extremely fussy - and he was breastfed [frown]

Glitterygook · 13/12/2005 14:04

Ds1 had SMA gold and he wasn't a great feeder. Ds2 and ds3 had cow and gate and both wolfed it down!

Not sure if this means anything though as ds1 was breastfed to start with and he wasn't keen on that either!

He's still a fussy b*gger!

NotQuiteCockney · 13/12/2005 14:04

Yeah, I find adult taste tests of formula milk totally irrelevant, like human taste tests of dog food. Who cares what it tastes like to us?

TherewasnoMOOMattheINn · 14/12/2005 10:16

dd1 had aptimil. very few foods she hasn't liked and has always had a good appetite. and is NOT overweight and NOT allergic to anything and is rarely ill - so there!

merrycompo · 14/12/2005 10:18

bottlefed ds from 6 weeks with sma gold. He's 20 months now and eats everything and anything!

RosiePosie · 14/12/2005 10:34

I think it's relevant - I tasted the stuff and it tasted foul - why on earth would I feed something to my baby that I knew tasted foul? But then, I don't like dogs and I love my kids.

I'm not saying you don't love your kids obviously - but if I have the choice of feeding my baby something bitter or something sweet and creamy, of course I'm going to choose the better tasting one.

MerlinsBeard · 14/12/2005 11:05

ds1 had sma fomr 2 weeks(i struggled with bf and had no support) he IS a fussy eater but so was i (still am), he eats a wide range of things tho.

ds2 was bf till 16 weeks and after that SMA made him very sicky so we switched to cow and gate and hes happy with that and weaning well. again with a wide variety.

i think it depends more on what u wean them and how u wean them rather than what formula they have.

with regards to taste, i have never tasted it so can't comment on that

FlameRobin · 14/12/2005 11:08

I went with Cow & Gate - was told by friends that most of them... if they started on SMA then the baby generally wasn't happy on it, and they ended up changing milks to find one they did like, but the ones who started on C&G stuck with it.

DD eats pretty much anything now.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 14/12/2005 11:08

"why on earth would I feed something to my baby that I knew tasted foul?"

Have you ever tasted your breastmilk?? I did (just a tiny taste of mine) and thought it tasted foul too - but DS1 loved it.

ds was bottle fed on SMA from 3 weeks old.

He is now six, but has always eaten just about anything put in front of him. I was an adventurous weaner, and from 6 months old he ate whatever we had (hungarian goulash, spag bol, smoked salmon, you name it). He would NEVER eat avocado, which so many people recommend as a weaning food.

His prefered foods now show a very mature palate (loves seafood, stilton, chorizo).

I don't think the formula makes a difference. I believe it's how you approach weaning that matters.

RTKangaSantaMummy · 14/12/2005 11:45

DS had SMA and eats everything apart from RICE -

he loves adult food - mincepies and christmas cake and christmas pudding

real cheese rather than synthetic cheese slices iyswim

BUT I agree it is more what they are weaned on and eat as a family than the type of milk

my sister breastfed eldest nephew until he was a toddler and now he hardly eats anything and anything he does eat has to be with loads of tomato ketchup and is nuggets, sausages, chips pizza etc.

Bozza · 14/12/2005 11:46

Both mine were breastfed initially - DS for 12 weeks and then mixed fed, DD for 5 months and then mixed fed. Both on Cow and Gate. They both eat most foods - DD (18 months) doesn't like baked beans. My DN was breastfed to 5 months then mixed fed on SMA and he eats absolutely anything in vast quantities. He is 10 months.

followthestarlover · 14/12/2005 11:48

having tasted every milk on the market, i can say that i didn't find sma at all bitter!

aptamil tasted most like my breastmilk... but it made ds very sick.

it isn't always a case of being able to choose the one that tastes nicest to you... ds started on breastmilk, then we moved to sma gold which made him constipated, as did cow and gate.
aptamil and farleys made him very sick

we used hipp organic for a while which i thought was the worst tasting one, although ds yummed it up! he is now on cow and gate organic which for some reason he tolerates better than regular cow and gate

followthestarlover · 14/12/2005 11:48

oh and he eats anything i put in front of him! including marmite!!!

LilacBump · 14/12/2005 11:49

DD had SMA gold & progress. She likes most food, but was very fussy but blame that on feeding her jars when weaning, rather than the formula.

Jensmum · 14/12/2005 12:47

I breast fed for ther first 6 weeks then gave my dd SMA gold she now (she's 3) has a very strong pallete for food and eats almost everything as long as it's got a strong flavour esp garlic, spices and pesto.

Someone said this further down and I think the same - not sure if it's the formula or the way you approach food with your child.

RosiePosie · 14/12/2005 12:47

batters wrote "what a useful post rosieposie."

My post wasn't offensive in anyway - I was just stating my point of view - just because it's different to other people's doesn't make it offensive or wrong. It IS important to me that what I feed my baby tastes good, and the only way I CAN gauge that is through my own taste buds. What is wrong in saying that I would rather give my baby something that tasted sweet than bitter. Saying that breastmilk tastes horrible is irrelevant because the taste changes but I shan't continue or might be parped for starting a breastmilk/formula debate. I wish there was an emoticon for "I'm confused and upset that my post has been misinterpreted"

SackAche · 14/12/2005 12:55

RosiePosie - Totally at your post!!! OMG! Didn't you read the original post at all???

What an insensitive horrible post that was.... you can't dress it up. It was just purely a stirring, obnoxious post for the sake of a bit of controversy.

NutcrackingXmas · 14/12/2005 13:00

Dd1 had SMA Gold and will eat mst things really, although not keen on fruit.

Dd2 had SMA gold and then White and she will eat most things too, just not much of them.

Ds had SMA then Farleys and then Omnio Comfort and he is a pig, will eat anything and everything.

SackAche · 14/12/2005 13:02

I used SMA Gold, then White, then Progress on my 2 and both have very different tastes today. Ds is 4.5yrs old and dd is 16mths. Dd prefers SMA progress to cows milk so it can't taste that bad!
