Bf helps you lose baby weight??Myth or not!

JUst a thought. My Mum always told me that she lost her "baby weight" from pregnancy once she stopped bf. Happened with all four of us(me and siblings). I understand that they say bf helps weight loss cos of the calories you burn but to be honest it just makes me hungrier and eat double the amount of calories I'd lose anyway. Have tried to cut down(on food) but after six months still have my baby weight stuck(and sticking out) around my hips. So what do you think? Does bf really aid weight loss and if that is true...do I just eat too much??? :o and and did anyone else find they lost the weight when they stopped bf???

I posted a thread recently on losing too much weight while BF! I think everyone is different Wink

lollyheart · 22/09/2010 15:14

I lost mine after i stopped bf.

Habbibu · 22/09/2010 15:15

I think it really varies from person to person. It falls off me when bf-ing, even though I'm v hungry and eat lots in the first couple of months, but for others it doesn't come off until after they stop.

myth for me, but then i don't think the babies ever got much milk from me while i TROUGHED like never before.

RaisedFromPerdition · 22/09/2010 15:16

Depends upon the person. I bfed for 3 years+, ran, ate healthily, tried really hard to lose the last bit of weight. Nope, would not shift. Stopped bfing and the weight just disappeared.

I lost loads of weight from breastfeeding, but only after I'd been breastfeeding for over a year.

TheBountyMuncher · 22/09/2010 15:19

I lost lots of weight breastfeeding. Put it all back on again when I stopped though because I'm greedy and lazy

CMOTdibbler · 22/09/2010 15:21

I lost loads - like two dress sizes smaller than pre preg by the time ds was 6 months old. He was a right guzzle guts though

Fifilottie · 22/09/2010 15:24

Wow...I really hope I am one of those that loses weight once I stop then. We'll see!! Kind of hoping I take after my Mum in that sense :)

I was never hungrier when breastfeeding? by the time DS was six months I was two jeans sizes smaller than before I was pregnant. (was a 10, ended up a 6!)

Stopped breastfeeding in January and am now back up one dress size (to an 8). I look much healthier now - I've always been pretty skinny but I did look too thin when breastfeeding.

curlymama · 22/09/2010 15:36

The lowest weight I have ever been was when I was bfing.

lovingthesun · 22/09/2010 16:58

took me almost a year to loss the last 7lbs of babyweight, then I kept it off for years. I bf for over 2 years. So no, not really. I had this idea that it would burn all the fat off my thighs..I'm still dreaming.

BooBooGlass · 22/09/2010 17:01

Myth for me.

AngelDog · 22/09/2010 18:32

Worked for me - until DS started gobbling solids and taking less milk, when I started putting on weight again as I'd failed to adjust my calorie intake accordingly.

I think it varies from person to person.

QueenofDreams · 22/09/2010 18:35

I think I lost my pregnancy weight while breastfeeding, although didn't lose any additional weight.
My mum apparently lost loads of weight while breastfeeding me. She became underweight and was advised to stop feeding because she was getting so thin.

theyoungvisiter · 22/09/2010 18:47

I am in your mum's camp sadly - I get SOOOOO hungry while bfing, and I also get a rampant sweet tooth (I almost never eat sweet things when not bfing - it's just not my taste).

I ate cake like a pig solidly for 12 months after both my babies, and didn't lose a single lb, in fact I think I was heavier than immediately post birth!

But after about a year (both babies) it started to slowly melt away without me doing anything in particular, and I was back to pretty much pre-pregnancy weight after 2 years bfing. So I didn't have to actually stop bfing to lose the weight, but I did seem to need to fall below a certain milk-production threshold if that makes sense.

mollycuddles · 22/09/2010 18:52

I lose weight pretty easily when bf. I'm a real heifer but dd is now 17 weeks and I've lost 2 and a half stones which is baby weight and a bit more.

GeekOfTheWeek · 22/09/2010 18:53

Myth.

spiderlight · 22/09/2010 18:57

I got back to withina pound or two of my pre-pregnancy weight fairly quickly, but am a completely different shape and cannot for the life of me lose any more weight, however hard I try.

WoTmania · 22/09/2010 19:48

I've lost lots of weight while BF too :)

cazzybabs · 22/09/2010 19:50

No.. am walking over 6 miles a day and rowing for half an hour.. eating sensibly and I am fat fat fat

ClimberChick · 23/09/2010 05:36

What worked for me was going back to work. I get paid to lose weight (oh, and also to do some actual work).

ClimberChick · 23/09/2010 05:37

and she's still EBF, actually that's a lie we started weaning a few weeks ago
