And yes, studies show there are lifelong differences in groups of children who are breastfed and those who are not. I'm talking not just about the short term differences - greater risk of gut infections etc, but about lifetime risks of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, breast cancer, even differences in IQ. Of course not every child who is formula fed will be disadvantaged by it, and not every child who is breastfed will be free of these problems but overall, not breastfeeding raises the risk factor.

oh well mumtosomeone, at least you didnt pay a big multinational to give your children that list of ailments

mumtosomeone · 26/08/2005 10:30

I wouldnt swap breast for bottle at 3am..I would have to get out of bed!! no thanks!

mumtosomeone · 26/08/2005 10:33

I was breastfed...I cant spell.I have no real qualifications and I am fat!!!
mmm something wrong with my family then!!!
I just think breastfeeding is best cos its free and hassle free too. I am too disorganised to shop and wash bottles..its so much easier to get my t*t out!!!!

I might well have been tempted, especially if I hadn't read up so much on health issues around infant feeding. And let's face it, lots of people are. And the more advertisers are allowed to tell mother that their formula is exactly the same or even better than breastmilk, the more women will choose it.

Actually, I am glad that formula manufacturers are working hard to make formula better for babies, but it's still not the same.
I would choose a brand with LCPs and prebiotics if I were to choose formula (and might do so if I decide to send dd to a childminder), and I don't think formula is poison, but it won't protect her against breast cancer in the future. And no formula manufacturer will tell you that.

Under 6 month old formula is virtually always on special at my local supermarket in NZ. When I complained they said that this does not contitute a sales promotion. They are obviously just doing it out of the kindness of their hearts! [sarcastic emoticon]

And I agree with you about breastfeeding being easy, free, no hassle (when you get going). But not everyone thinks that way, otherwise it wouldn't be the case that less than half of babies are still being breastfed at six weeks.

aloha · 26/08/2005 10:36

I do know that not everyone can breastfeed, but I don't think we should be undermining breastfeeding before people even have a chance to find out.

Anyone seen Groundhog Day?

WigWamBam · 26/08/2005 10:52

Oh yes, I've seen Groundhog Day. Only, when I realised I didn't like it, and didn't want to see it again, I didn't bother going back for another look. I couldn't see the point because I knew it bored me, so I ignored all the posters for it and went and did something else instead ...

Toothache · 26/08/2005 10:58

WIG WAM BAM
GONNA MAKE YOU MAAA MAN
WAM BAM BAM

WigWamBam · 26/08/2005 10:59

Wow - serenaded at this time in the morning ... not sure I can cope with that

mumtosomeone · 26/08/2005 11:07

its not groundhog day!!
Its groundhog day 2 because this is slightly different!!!
And it doesnt seem too confrontational..or have I missed something?!!!

aloha · 26/08/2005 11:09

I think one of the big problems is that many people don't realise that breastfeeding has well researched lifelong effects. It's easier to ditch it if you don't believe that.

wordsmith · 26/08/2005 11:55

I wonder why they never made Groundhog Day 2?
On a slightly different note - my DH swears that Angie MacDowell has had a face job. What do you think?

Enid · 26/08/2005 11:56

she has spooky witch face now like nicole kidman
