Oooh that's one that I haven't read for a while, but I'm sure it's on one of my shelves. Will have to dig it out and have another read.

CornishKK · 19/04/2010 22:25

Love it to. And I actually really enjoyed the film which is unusual!

MoChan · 19/04/2010 22:26

I love it, it's perfect.

WhatSheSaid · 19/04/2010 22:49

I liked the film too, though I wasn't completely convinced by Tara whoever (Fitzgerald?) as Topaz.

sharbie · 19/04/2010 22:55

Ooooooo Yes love it and made me want to live in a castle [sigh].

How about The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret too ?

TheCatAteMyGymsuit · 19/04/2010 23:07

another vote for love it!
Made me wish I had grown up in desperate straitened (but castle) circumstances. Sigh.
Agree re Tara Fitzgerald btw

gremlindolphin · 24/04/2010 21:44

Glad to hear other people liked it too! I can't believe I hadn't come across it before. I didn't know there was a film and I want to read some more of hers (the dds and i did 101 Dalmations tonight which counts I suppose!)

Rhian82 · 24/04/2010 21:51

I love it, one of my all-time favourites and I have a habit of buying it for people's birthdays!

Lio · 24/04/2010 21:52

It's a gorgeous book.

oddgirl · 30/04/2010 18:17

This is my favourite book of all time-love love love the opening " I write this sitting in the sink". Evocative and so beautifully written

whatwasthatagain · 30/04/2010 18:19

Film? What film? Or have I seen it? Loved the book and had very vivid images in my mind whilst reading, so don't know now if I did see the film or not. Not my favourite book of all time, but lovely all the same.

Bonsoir · 30/04/2010 18:20

This book lived under my bed when I was a teenager - I adored it!

Oh it's brilliant. Oddgirl, you are so right, the start is just amazing. To my absolute delight my 10 yr old dd is now reading it too

JulesJules · 10/05/2010 21:00

Love this book, read it hundreds of times. Just wanted to be her, sitting in the sink...

JenEm · 14/05/2010 09:33

I love it, my favorite book, makes you pleased to be English and wish you lived 50 years ago....in a castle.

loved it to bits first red it about 14 i think.

Boga · 22/05/2010 21:16

love it. one of my favourites.

Fwaggle · 10/07/2010 11:02

Love the book - hated the film though. I didn't think they got Topaz right at all. I wanted to call my daughter Topaz actually, but my husband refused.

SpringHeeledJack · 10/07/2010 11:14

My Granny gave me this book when I was about 12.

since then I've read it at least yearly. I don't even need to read it- iykwim

I think they were taking liberties trying to make it into a film- it's far too long and rich to be boiled down to 90 minutes odd.
