Loved The Rosie Project and I haven't read many other comedies. I'm going through a tough time at home and need more light-heartedness in my life.

Definitely James Herriot - even the memory of Cedric the farting boxer makes me laugh.

Bill Bryson -Notes From A Small Island, Neither Here Nor There.

buckleten · 23/07/2021 14:17

Bill Bryson makes me laugh out loud! I also love anything by Sophie Kinsella

Meadowlands1 · 04/08/2021 15:30

I loved this one. Positive and witty.

Everything You Ever Taught Me by Person Irresponsible.
Forty-something, fat, funny, divorced, cat-owning, female British alcoholic sets out to walk solo across America. Realises instantly she’s made a huge mistake but carries on regardless.

Yummyoldbag · 04/08/2021 16:08

Totally agree with ‘Everything you ever taught me’. Balanced between poignant and funny it made me laugh (and have the occasional snigger) out loud!

Yummyoldbag · 04/08/2021 16:10

Ooo, worth adding she made the phenomenal trek across the States during COVID, talk about getting away from it all! Definitely extreme, definitely eccentric, definitely courageous as well as funny and heart lifting.

CoodleMoodle · 04/08/2021 16:15

Anything by Mil Millington, but in particular Things My Girlfriend And I Have Argued About. I've read it hundreds of times and it still makes me laugh.

MrsLindor · 04/08/2021 17:31

Loved, Everything You Ever Taught Me by Person Irresponsible. A fascinating journey, literally and figuratively

hernameis · 04/08/2021 17:37

PG Woodhouse Jeeves series make me laugh also really enjoyed Deric Longden.

over50andfab · 04/08/2021 17:47

Also read "Everything you ever Taught Me" by Person Irresponsible - so witty and well written making full use of the English language. Somewhat deprecating about her abilities I think and such a brave thing to do. Am in awe.

@crosshatching
I used to adore all the Marianne Keyes books - until her most recent... it's painful to read.. the other books used to make me LOL - I would be sat there laughing..

So any book from Marian Keyes except 'adults' . So disappointing

littlebauxpeep · 28/08/2021 21:20

Crazy Rich Asians trilogy - has many hysterical moments within. I laughed out loud many times.

Where'd you go Bernadette - very funny.

Agree with Marian Keyes - but avoid This Charming Man, laughs were hard to come by in that one. Grown Ups (the latest ) is a very immersive family saga with some funny episodes although N.B. trigger warning for eating disorders (well handled and certainly not the only focus of the book).

Bill Bryson - some very funny vignettes rather than being a long, comedic narrative.

Also agree with Sophie Kinsella - the Shopaholics are funny especially the earlier ones. Later ones become a bit too formulaic.

Bridget Jones' Diary is funny (at least it was years ago, perhaps it's due a revisionist glance).

Indecisivelurcher · 28/08/2021 21:22

Oo sorry, just need to follow!

WildCherryBlossom · 29/08/2021 03:08

There are some excellent suggestions here. I often re-read The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy if I want a funny book.

Another one that made me laugh a lot was the Wimbledon Poisoner (dark humour though)

TrampolineForMrKite · 29/08/2021 04:14

The title of this sounds so unfunny but it had me howling. I read it in one sitting. Was brilliant. Can’t recommend highly enough. Saying no more than that so everyone clicks the link out of curiosity!

Guineapigbridge · 29/08/2021 04:35

What about a book of clever cartoons like
Calvin and Hobbes
The Far Side

WildCherryBlossom · 29/08/2021 09:31

Yes GuineaPig - I was thinking of something like TinTin. Some of those are very, very funny.

AWonderfulNewName · 31/08/2021 20:16

Any Adrian Mole book by Sue Townsend or Terry Pratchett's Discworld.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/08/2021 20:18

Deric Longden’s books.

Ellerehj · 10/09/2021 04:29

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine had me laughing out loud.. and then crying.. and then laughing again! Absolutely bloody brilliant book

CanIPleaseHaveOne · 10/09/2021 05:31

A Confederacy of Dunces. Makes me howl everytime!

MyOtherProfile · 10/09/2021 05:35

The first three Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy books. Not the 4th in the trilogy though.

Theblackdogagain · 10/09/2021 05:36

Jasper fforde Thursday next books, very well written and based in Berkshire so if you live there or know the area its funnier.

CatNamedEaster · 10/09/2021 05:40

Delete This At Your Peril. So funny, a book about a man who strings email scammers along. I still have no idea whether he is real or if It's all made up. Grin
