Loved The Rosie Project and I haven't read many other comedies. I'm going through a tough time at home and need more light-heartedness in my life.

If you don't mind regressing to sixth grade, "Hating Alison Ashley" by Robin Klein is excellent. I often recommend it to grown-ups, and they love it.

“Don’t Mr Disraeli”. By Caryl Brahms and S J Simon.
“A bullet in the ballet.” By the same authors.

A lot of different books by David Sedaris is what you need

SirGawain · 12/10/2021 22:15

“The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared

WildCherryBlossom · 14/10/2021 14:08

Oh yes I loved the Hundred Year Old Man. Absolutely loved it.

I found The Girl Who Saved The King of Sweden less entertaining, sadly. He's just published another though.

French Revolutions by Tim Moore. Non-cyclist Tour obsessive Brit decides to have a crack at the Tour de France route a couple of weeks before the real event. Everyone is aghast.
He's a master of self deprecating humour and even better at capturing the French, both the snobs and the salt of the earth types.

Its a family classic. I've read it three times and have proudly introduced it to my 13 year old DS.

The two by 'Thursday Murder Club ' books by Richard Osman.

Predicatably laugh out loud funny.

newtb · 08/05/2022 15:34

Anything by Tom Sharpe

Nouveaunew · 09/05/2022 23:54

Loving this thread.

MaitreKarlsson · 10/05/2022 12:19

Accidentally revived a old thread, but there must be more!

Also Dear Lupin. A collection of letters by the briliant Roger Mortimer to his rebellious son Charlie (or Lupin). Runs the gamut from despairing to incredulous to resigned. Hilarious throughout though!

MaitreKarlsson · 14/05/2022 14:26

Can't believe I forgot Love in A Cold Climate 😊

Mandodari · 23/05/2022 22:37

Anything by P.G. Wodehouse
The end of the world is flat

stayathomer · 23/05/2022 22:47

Anything by Keris Stainton, Tracy Bloom, Rich Amoii or Fiona Gibson, oh and just read How Self Help did not change my life and snorted a fair few times!!!

MaitreKarlsson · 26/05/2022 21:49

@Riapia oh must read a Bullet in the Ballet - my mum used to have that one in the bookshelves. She also loved The Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo - evwr heard of them?! Similar names!

MaitreKarlsson · 26/05/2022 21:52

@Mandodari just ordered the end of the world is flat. Great reviews!

MaitreKarlsson · 26/05/2022 21:54

@stayathomer I also loved How self help did not change my life! She needs to write more books....

Oestrogelsmuggler · 21/06/2022 21:02

Jonathan Coe's What a Carve Up!
Helen Fielding's Cause Celeb
Philip Hensher The Northern Clemency

loveyouradvice · 12/02/2023 13:19

Great thread... I'd been about to post asking this as a question...

For me:
LOVE Eleanor Oliphant - total classic and if you haven't read, u r in for a treat
Agree re Marian Keyes

And my go to, for total escapism and madcap whimsy beautifully written - definitely Sophie Kinsella - both Shopaholic and others like Twenties Girl... absurd and wonderful on every level

Look forward to hearing other ideas ... about to get some!

Bill Bryson a walk in the woods. So funny

I was going to post this…this is a hilarious book.

JoonT · 12/02/2023 20:14

Right Ho Jeeves by P G Wodehouse. Read it out loud. It's better than Prozac.

newrubylane · 12/02/2023 20:30

A Year in the Merde by Stephen Clarke

The Georgia Nicolson books by Louise Rennison - technically aimed at teenage girls,, but they are hilarious and will definitely take you back to your teens!

All the Adrian Mole books.
Diary of a Provincial Lady

ConnieSaks · 02/04/2023 20:54

Travels with my Aunt (Graham Greene).

MaitreKarlsson · 04/04/2023 09:29

Just read a new one - Susannah Constantine - Ready for Almost Nothing. Some parts very sad but other parts hilarious. She's in the fine tradition of English eccentrics.
