Ok these are of course very different books but I thought they were both brilliant, best I've read in ages

And I'm now looking for more as good as these?

The Cactus by Sarah Haywood is kind of like Eleanor Oliphant

Pooshweens · 12/12/2019 12:39

I was going to suggest Cactus too. It's very good. I have also just finished My sister the serial killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite. It's great, not too long, isn't gory but is really great for discussions too.

CosmoK · 16/12/2019 18:40

Another one who was going to suggest the cactus! It's very good

Saucery · 16/12/2019 18:43

The Wisdom Of Sally Red Shoes.

FlamingoAndJohn · 03/01/2020 23:43

I’ve just finished Eleanor Oliphant in two days flat and I’m looking for a recommendation.

Wh0leCl0ves · 06/01/2020 07:56

Glass Castle is similar to Educated and I preferred it.

Wh0leCl0ves · 06/01/2020 07:57

A Man Called Ove is a bit like Elinor Oliphant.

Iloveliberty · 12/01/2020 02:47

Something to live for. By Richard Roper.
Quite similar to Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine.

freerangechickens · 12/01/2020 03:59

Another vote for Glass Castle for Educated like books. Also Heartland by Sara Smarsh is a lot like Educated, and IMHO, even better, also.

PooWillyBumBum · 14/01/2020 16:49

I am currently reading A Man Called Ove and I think it's miles better than Eleanor Oliphant, but some similar themes.

A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown

True autobiography of a black girl growing up in the care system in 70s America

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

Bridget Jones diaries - I know we’ve all seen the films, but the books are worth reading as well. Eleanor Oliphant reminded me of these books,

Violetparis · 27/01/2020 19:48

Sun Dog by Monique Roffey was my first thought as a suggestion.

If you didn't watch the TV adaptation can I suggest Elizabeth is Missing.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 27/01/2020 20:33

Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout is great - short stories all around the same town with a fab, cantankerous heroine.

katy1213 · 27/01/2020 20:34

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
Where the Crawdads Sing.
Hillbilly Elegy.

Minimamame · 07/02/2020 21:34

The Other Half of Augusta Hope by Joanna Glen

7Days · 07/02/2020 21:39

Rachel Joyce is along the same lines OP.
Perfect is one, or the Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harokd Fry.
Hypey books a few years ago - check charity shops.

Pooshweens · 08/02/2020 06:22

Just finished Where the Crawdads Sing which was amazing

Thanks for all these suggestions, I am working my way thru them!

My book club read and enjoyed both Eleanor and Educated. Other favourites include
At the edge of the orchard
Little Paris bookshop
A man called Ove
The secret of orchard cottage
The keeper of lost things

Sorry I can’t remember any of the authors. We are just starting The Gustav Sonata though I can’t comment on it yet.

The Seven Imperfect Rules of Elvira Carr - brilliant
