Ok these are of course very different books but I thought they were both brilliant, best I've read in ages

And I'm now looking for more as good as these?

Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata is great too.

Fanthorpe · 26/05/2020 15:19

Bad Blood by Lorna Sage, if you enjoyed Educated.

Epigram · 26/05/2020 15:20

If you liked Educated I think you'll like To Throw Away Unopened by Viv Albertine.

I second The Seven Imperfect Rules of Elvira Carr - I enjoyed it even more than Eleanor Oliphant

ilovemydogandMrObama · 26/05/2020 15:22

An American Marriage - Tayari Jones.

PaddingtonsHat · 26/05/2020 15:24

Just finished The Silent Wife by Kerry Fisher- sucked me in quickly and couldn’t put it down

BG2015 · 26/05/2020 16:28

Kerry Fisher is very underrated - I've loved all her books.

Another great author is Imogen Clarke. Loved all of hers too and often only 99p on Kindle

Ellmau · 31/05/2020 21:42

JD Vance's Hillbilly Elegy has some similarities with Educated.

Asgoodasarest · 02/06/2020 19:57

I really liked Queenie by Candice Carty- Williams. I second Something to live for by Richard Roper too.

Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry was my first thought.

Also, the Bridget Jone books are worth reading.

If you liked Educated, you will like
In the Days of Rain by Rebecca Stott.

Another vote for Elvira Carr. Fab book

I really enjoyed Queenie and Keeper of Lost Things.

The House We Grew Up In by Lisa Jewell is another book along similar themes that I have loved this year.

MaitreKarlsson · 30/12/2020 00:35

Loved Educated- read Hillbilly Elegy too and would recommend Lowborn by Kerry Hudson, about growing up in poverty in the UK. The audiobook is also excellent- she has a calm lilting Scots accent yet is describing the most harrowing experiences. Really impressive.

A Man Called Ove is a bit like Elinor Oliphant.

winniemum · 02/03/2021 16:50

The Midnight Library
Matt Haig. Brilliant book

tostaky · 03/10/2021 22:13

Sorrow and Bliss - similar to E. Oliohant

SoundAndVisions · 03/10/2021 22:16

The curious incident of the dog in the night time by Mark Boone

I know this is an old thread but I have given this book up at 30% on my Kindle.

I don't have enough time in my life to waste any more of it in the company of Martha. She's joined the top of the list of characters I Could Not Care Less About - along with the tedious teenagers from Normal People.

Like them she manages to combine being deeply boring and uninteresting with being deeply annoying.

I hated Elinor Oliphant too.

Dawn O Porter, The Cows.

myelephant · 04/06/2022 19:21

The Shock of the Fall - Nathan Filer
Perfect - Rachel Joyce

Frogdinner · 18/12/2022 19:06

A Tidy Ending by Joanna Cannon is very good, similar in vein to Eleanor but much better.

heartofglass23 · 31/07/2023 14:42

I liked both of those but really didn't like sorrow and bliss and the midnight library!

Some great suggestions here though that I'm keeping not of!

I also liked Lowborn, Motherwell, Hillbilly Elegy.
