If this appears in the 'active' I'm looking to hear from Black mumsnetters just as an FYI

Had this discussion earlier with friends about Kamala potentially taking over now Joe Biden has stepped down but with the rise of populism, it's scary times with the amount of misogynoir she'll face especially against trump.

Aside from how women let alone Bi-racial women are presented in US politics her politics and record for Black Americans isn't the best especially her track record on policing.

I can't see them voting for her. You know what it's like as a black woman in the workplace. Build you up the turn on you when you get better than everyone else.

JamSandle · 21/07/2024 21:37

I appreciate your post but Kamala Harris is half black half Asian. Indian mother I believe. Please don't practice erasure of this half of her identity.

As for Kamala, I'm not sure if she is popular or not but she stands a good chance.

JamSandle · 21/07/2024 21:38

Oops I saw you did refer to her as biracial - my apologies

I get your point but this is America, home of the one drop rule

Also she is American. So she is classed as black over there!

I literally said in the OP she's bi-racial I for one don't like it when white women post on here, so I'm not about to as a Black woman post in the south Asian thread because that space isn't mine to take up.

There aren't spaces for every bi-racial mix for me to post this in, if there was I'd post there obviously.

Her politics doesn't help poc either, she does have a fantastic silk press! I want to know her secret!

I honestly wish she didn't put herself forward as it's a lot for what she's about to face.

You can see it in the reporting they disregard her Asian heritage and just call her 'first African American VP' if she's smart she'll lean into her Asian heritage as there's a sizeable middle class demographic for south Asians

It won't change a thing for POC or women if she becomes the first brown woman president, so I can't get excited about that. I just want whoever does run to beat Trump, because I simply just can't go through all that again

Obama burned an image that America wont ever forget, a black family in the White House. 46 presidents, one biracial man who identifies as black , 45 white men. I know many that felt 'it would never happen' etc. The amount of black people I know who said Obama hadn't a hope in hell and he won by a big margin twice.

Same with Harris, if she becomes the first woman in the White House, that's something, if she becomes the first part black , part Indian woman in the white house, that REALLY something for every non-white child looking at the TV and picking up a history books in America forever.

she does have a fantastic silk press! I want to know her secret!

OP be careful on how you presume other people who are part of the global majority's natural hair to be like.

My DD is black and white, but doesn't have afro hair. I'm black with fine afro curly hair. This means my hair is very easy to straighten. I have other black blood relations whose afro hair is thicker but have larger curls.

When I first went natural over 20 years ago due to my hair type I had lots of ignorant comments about my hair from people including black people. My black blood relations with the larger curls also faced similar comments.

My DD now gets adults, who should know better, incorrectly presuming her ethnic origins.

Her hair is textured....

there's been images circulating of her on social media.

We can celebrate our natural hair whilst also celebrating a great silk press

You’re getting really strange responses!

BellesAndGraces · 28/07/2024 08:20

I also didn’t think she had a hope in hell but she seems to have gotten off to a good start! Great fundraising and vocal support from white women. I do wonder if she can sustain it and win. I keep reading that she had a questionable record as a prosecutor but I also know deep in my heart that the worst of Kamala Harris will be better than the best of Trump.

Re all the scrutiny of her record and policies, I find it interesting that she is being held to a much higher standard than Trump. The end of Trump’s term ended with a riot, a death, arrests and threats of impeachment.

DysonSphere · 28/07/2024 08:50

I only care about the fine details. Her record as District/Attorney General, her attitude to policing. Who she chooses for VP. Most of all, her FOREIGN POLICY. Obama maintained the nasty, colonialist, foreign policy we still see today.

This is interesting (though not the whole picture for balance) from The Guardian.

As DA and AG, Harris was also criticized for defending convictions in cases where there was evidence of innocence and prosecutorial misconduct; opposing legislation to require AG investigations into police shootings; defending the prison system in civil rights litigation, as the state’s top lawyer and cashing with sex worker rights’ groups. She declined to seek the death penalty as SFDA, but then as AG fought against a challenge to capital punishment.
Jeralynn Brown-Blueford’s 18-year-old son was killed by an Oakland police officer in 2012, and after the local DA declined to file charges, her family advocated for then AG Harris to interfere but the officer was never prosecuted

I am interesting in her background as far as it is used against her, in which case I will have her back metaphorically speaking, but that's it though. No further than that.

America has never been in such a poor position in terms of it's image on the international stage for very valid reasons.

I really don't wish to derail the thread, but her speech about 'Israels right to defend itself' just made me inwardly groan. Same foreign policy with a different race and gender to authorise it.

BellesAndGraces · 28/07/2024 09:40

@DysonSphere given the options I think same same but different would be a win. Trump will be much, much worse, particularly given his choice of running mate.

Maggiethecat · 28/07/2024 11:05

It’s hilarious to hear people talk about her being unelected to office 🤨 and lacking experience but many of the people raising this seemed to overlook the point when DJT first ran for office and don’t seem to be applying same to Vance now.

BellesAndGraces · 28/07/2024 11:10

She also hasn’t been indicted by a grand jury on God knows how many federal charges!

There is no other suitable candidate at this stage. Who would you suggest as an alternative if it was possible?

Trying to respond to the same OP comment that you did @Reugny but it already had a quote in!

Kamala is half Asian, so in hair terms she has half "Afro hair" and half what's known as "European hair"; it shouldn't be a surprise that it straightens easily, most likely with no chemicals, that's her secret OP lol

(I'm aware other mixed race people do have Afro hair rather than wavy, but I've not seen any suggestion of Afro for Kamala, even in her younger days pictures).

I never said her hair was 4C but she had textured hair...

As I said you can celebrate curls, coils as well as a good silk press, her hair like most of us would kink back in humidity hers doesn't hence it's a good silk press! Silk presses aren't chemical either it's just good styling products and a hot comb...

@MotherOfRatios look at you having to defend yourself for complimenting the woman’s (top tier) silk press 😂
