Racism is rife on here....

In case this comes up on Trending or Active, this is the Black MNetters board and I’m actively looking for opinions from Black women only!

Is anyone else just fed up of the racism here from Meghan Markle to the recent of the 15-year-old girl? To the discussion on Chris Kaba it's enough and I've noticed it's always the posters who claim they are feminists that are the worst. Not to mention the amount of white women who say, but I have a mixed race children..... and? You can still be racist

A lot of people don’t know what racism means and that in itself is quite scary. There’s no possible way to have a discussion about racism when so many don’t actually know the meaning of the word or how to use it!

Throughout human history language and definitions have evolved based on context and yet of course this is the one word which causes contention.

r= pp isn’t going to work. Invariably given who has the power in all of these conversations racism is going to have to be the word used to discuss all individual level prejudice in the end. It’s the only word that is taken seriously despite the fact it doesn’t have to be this way.

20thousandleaguesunderthesewage · 29/09/2023 08:16

Yes Mumsnet does have a racism problem. It’s got worse. The Mumsnet demographic has changed so it’s become the Daily Mail on stilts. It’s also a hub for “gender critical” feminists who are fine with their far right bedfellows who join them in rallying against Trans people ignoring that they are actual Neo -Nazis.

It’s insidious on here.

20thousandleaguesunderthesewage · 29/09/2023 08:20

Oh of course I forgot the common or garden racists and the quiet racists saying things on here they wouldn’t in real life and all the worst instincts and every other flavour or racist.

I'm as GC as they come but I stay away from that board as it's been taken over by people who aren't really feminist or gender critical. The amount of homophobia has increased in recent years too.

They tend to be fans of Kemi Badenoch or Suella B though, so they couldn't possibly be racist!

20thousandleaguesunderthesewage · 29/09/2023 08:56

Yes that’s why I put it in inverted commas. I’m not GC but can understand people who genuinely are as opposed a lot of what’s on here which is dressed up that way but in reality is a gateway to the far right. I don’t want to derail because the conversation but just making the link because I think it’s part of the reason mumsnet has lurched right and the racism has got worse.

Gender critical beliefs aren't neo nazism, come on now. Or is this sarcasm?

skullbabe · 29/09/2023 09:10

If you havent noticed the co-opting of being GC by the right wing - and that includes nazis and white supremacists - then you havn't been paying attention. There are many black people who may be GC but will definately steer clear of breaking bread with may GC spaces here on MN for that very reason.

MuttonDresssedAsMutton · 29/09/2023 09:14

I will say I have seen some racism on here but it's usually called it and/or deleted. The Meghan threads are toxic, there are someHmm posts on the gymnastics situation recently

But I think it's ok to have nuance. I Don’t think it's racist for people to support stop and search, or to want to wait and see re Chris Kaba.

If someone says something that is ignorant, because they have a different lives experience, it's fine to just explain and be open. Like if someone doesn't know the downsides of stop and search or why young men carry knives. ^

It doesn't mean their racist and jumping straight to that gets peoples hackles up and stops them engaging in these discussions altogether.^
^
That's just my opinion. Someone will come along and say it's the wrong one^

skullbabe · 29/09/2023 09:18

Any way back to the topic at hand

OP - I saw your post last night and I hoped it wouldn't be over run by people racing to prove your points. Unfortunately that's exatly what has happened. For those of you who are struggling with this topic - I'm going to try to contextualize it for you in a way you might be able to

OP: (Posting in a women only section) Anyone tired of the misogyny and sexism on the wider site? Gives examples - can women (not men) respond if they relate?

Men:

  • I've never seen any misogyny or sexism here
  • I've seen it work both ways, sometimes people blame men for things they didn't even do - that's misandry isn't it?

Patricarchy supporting women:

  • There is a problem with misogyny and sexism but I think it really applies only to women who work in the corporate sector. I think excluding men is actually sexist. I think everything is worse if you're rich, white, male politician - get those pitchforks out. If you're disabled lesbian or an inanimate object all a mythical creature you're more likely to get a fair hearing than a white male billionaire.
  • This thread is textbook an anti man thread and it makes absolutely no sense to exclude men from these conversations.

More men:

  • Why are women's voices more important than men's?
  • Absolutely agree, there's no point in having an opinion if you’re a man in this space. Everyone is oppressed these days anyway.
  • I've reported this thread because it is absolutely sexist. If anyone had written a thread asking for only men's opinions it would be taken down.

And I'm sure there will be more to come. I you can understand why sometimes a women only space is necessary then perhaps you can extend this to black women. I don't have much hope for this though as this site seriously has real issues with racism.

I'm open to learning (avoid twitter) but I can't see how it's akin to nazis. I've seen some shitty opinions:

  • woman face is the same as black face etc
  • Karen is comparable to racism (again namedropping black people)
  • TW are unattractive because they have body hair/shoulders/tall/aren't perfectly dainty

But believing male=man is fine.

Even the above isn't nazism tbf

Generalising

there is not an alignment between gc ( no gender ) and right wing ( you must abide by the gender rules of your sex ) except that both groups know sex is real

However people wanting to smear feminists tend to trot that out

I'm going to try again. Please what I have said. GC has been co-opted by Nazis and white supremacists. I did not say that GC is nazism. This topic is not for this thread and so I will leave it there.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 29/09/2023 09:38

I wish I could say I was shocked by some of the posts on this thread but I am not. Yes, this site like literally any other space is racist, and even when they delete racist things, the racist posters can remain and poc have to play nice with these awful people. Posters can have multiple racist posts deleted but remain and black posters have to just put up with it. If MN didn't hold themselves up as better than other platforms it wouldn't bother me so much. The royal boards and feminist boards are awful for it. Often blatant racism is ignored by other posters and when a black poster calls it out it's them who are then targeted and told to stop with their agenda. It's disgusting. They have a whole special set of rules for discussing trans issues in order to protect the feelings of trans posters, but racism has no such equivalent consideration. Instead we have a special corner because they can;t make the whole site safe for us. Even here we get people coming on to say this space is racist.

MuttonDresssedAsMutton · 29/09/2023 09:42

Ok SkullBabe. It is the thread for it actually because we're talking about the atmosphere of this platform. We can respectfully disagree anyway, I don't understand your pov.

hadaye · 29/09/2023 10:08

Yes it does. People like @CallumDansTransitVan can start multiple racist threads including his recent one on how it was right that Chris Kaba was murdered but call him racist and down comes the banhammer.

NewNameNigel · 29/09/2023 13:23

Mumsnet has definitely become more racist over the past year or so.

I don't think that every GC person is racist but I reckon most racists are GC.

I have had blatent racism directed towards me on on the sex and gender forum and it it went completely unchallenged. @midgemadgemodge am I smearing feminism by saying this?

midgemadgemodge · 29/09/2023 13:43

The smearing came in the first post - it makes me despair when a thread essentially about negative stereotypes begins by trotting out negative stereotypes

Actually I disagree that right wing people tend to be GC - but that could be how we interpret the terminology. By GC I mean people who would see the world as better if gender stereotypes didn't exist ; I think right wing people want to enforce them on sex lines. The overlap comes as both groups think sex is important; but they differ in how and why they think sex is important .

MCOut · 29/09/2023 14:53

It’s telling that so many women of colour do not engage on those boards when many of our communities generally hold some socially conservative views. Personally, I have completely disengaged from that topic. I think both sides have co-opted the black response to oppression to push what is essentially a white victimhood narrative. It’s just that the GC are far more blatantly racist with it.

Let me be clear I recognise that there are people of colour, who engage on both sides of the debate. While I appreciate that trans activists call out the damage done by centring white womanhood I think they also unintentionally participate in it by presenting it as the foremost desirable form of femininity. One example of this is the outcomes of feminisation surgery. Another way it’s similar is that it is very apparent trans poc issues have been drop kicked to the side. I feel like the headlines: women v unisex spaces and self identification are not going to address the increased risk of deprivation a poc trans person will face. It feels very #MeToo.

You know why 🤣

MuttonDresssedAsMutton · 29/09/2023 15:49

You don't know who's white unless someone outright says it. I disagree with some of the opinions here and I'm not white.

MotherOfRatios · 29/09/2023 15:59

Are you black because I specifically asked for black people only

OP posts:
midgemadgemodge · 29/09/2023 16:05

You can ask all you like
You can't demand
And if you throw insults around. You'd be stupid to expect anyone to pay special attention to what you ask for

MuttonDresssedAsMutton · 29/09/2023 16:08

I'm half black and I'll have a different lived experience to you. Which is fine, we don't have to agree on everything.
