Boys name dilemma - sorry to be boring

Having huge problems deciding on a boys name. So far the list is as follows:

Freddie (I like Frederick too but husband doesn't)
Magnus
Tom
George

Bit worried that Freddie has got a bit too chav (with Jade's baby & featuring in Eastenders)and that Magnus is a bit obscure.

My daughter's name is Jemima - which we decided on almost immediatly!

Any opinions most welcome

I love Angus

how about Crawford?

lemonaid · 29/08/2006 23:36

Even with no shortenings of the first name possible, by the time they are adults boys will generally, AFAICS, have become [first syllable of surname]-ers, [first syllable of surname]-ey or [first syllable of surname]-o. This appears to be the male idea of an imaginative nickname .

foxtrot · 29/08/2006 23:54

lemonaid LOL at what my boys would be known as if/when this happens!

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 30/08/2006 14:44

We deliberately chose Samuel to be Samuel, yet we even have trouble eprsuading school to address him as such. We don't really mind though, we we made sure we were happy with Sam as well, and it's become his rpeference so we call him it as well. Stirling hasn't managed to attract a shortening (he was Stirly or Wurly as a baby, but that's passed now ). Harold was always meant to be a Harry- we decided to give him a lengthening because A) It's such a common name (Nursery are going to use the full version due to a surfeit of Harry's in this intake), and B) because it's a name common in both our famillies (FIL, my Grandad and an Uncle) and as such made a few people very happy, and allowed me to get away with giving him the middle name of my favourite pop star

I like them all but i' alwyas go for the full version of any name - you/dh may not like frederick or thomas that much but it gives your DS options when he gets older.

HOw about afred btw? ds friend is claled freddy or fred by EVERYONE but his full name is Alfred which I like.

I also personally think that the full name always sounds less 'chavy'.

Depends on your surname but assuming it works with all your options above I'd go for
Thomas Frederick
or possibly
Alfred Magnus

(george is my least favoured name of those choices)

riab · 31/08/2006 14:03

lemonaid and nooka said it better than me about full name v short name.

I know I made a consciuos decision when I was 14 to stop using the nickname my parents used for me OR the full name version and instead go for my middle name.

If I'd actually just been called Becky I wouldn't have had that option - at least not until I was 18 and only if I was prepared to go through a deed poll option at that age and risk the wrath of my parents and confusion of university entrace papers!

I am an expert on boys names, I like Tom the most, I think they are all pretty popular names atm, have you looked up a list of most popular boys names for 2005, I tried to make sure mine were 25 or over
Magnus is a bit unusual but would it suit a baby? What about Edward shortened to Ned, our firstborn is called this, and most people see to like it

Astrophe · 31/08/2006 15:14

ATTENTION LEWS!!! Where are you anyway?...I want to know what you're going to choose!

Alfred, Alfred, Alfred...lovely. Do it.

mummymelling · 31/08/2006 15:49

my DS are called
Dayne Kyle
Callum Zach
Ben Jack
Kai Daniel
you will know instantly you see him what his name is and after a bit you couldnt imagine him as anything else, my neighbour has just named hers Noah James

laudaud · 31/08/2006 15:55

where is Lews?

lilmamma · 31/08/2006 20:20

magnus is a old mans names,as would probably be shortend to mag! Alfred is just as bad,it reminds me of the tatty dog,on heartbeat,he was called alfred.I know an alfie,he was named after alfie moon on eastenders,he doesnt suit it one bit..

nooka · 31/08/2006 20:42

That Alfie Moon on Eastenders has a lot to answer for...

Gobbledigook · 31/08/2006 20:47

Tom gets my vote

justamum · 31/08/2006 23:51

I like Freddie, i would have liked a Freddie but our surname is Hall and he would have been f'all and I couldn't do that to a child. I also like William but my ds is Ted and we couldn't do "bill & ted" either. on the short/long thing my dd is called Isabella which i think is beautiful but people keep calling her "Iz" and its driving me mad, i don't mind Issy, but Iz!

Ellbell · 01/09/2006 00:47

I like all those names. However, I don't really like the alliteration of Jemima and George, so would discount that one. Magnus is nice (I met a Magnus recently and he was nice too!) and unusual, and I also love Fred/Frederick/Freddie. Tom is more common (as in 'frequently used', not as in 'chav') but I really like it. Would have called dd1 that if she'd been a boy, except that where I worked at the time literally everyone (about 6 people) had a son called Tom or a variation thereof!

All nice names, but if I had to choose one it would be Freddie.

lews · 05/09/2006 16:59

Sorry - been so busy at work - so many different opinions!

Still no decision made - but have managed to convince husband that if we go with Freddie he would be given the name Frederick - although I do like Alfred!

I'm a bit worried I might 'go off' Magnus in a couple of years - so it's looking like Freddie or Tom (Thomas) are leading the race.

Can't seem to say George in my mind without elongated the vowels!

I am struggling with boys names also but already have a: -

Dominic Mikael

But we like: -

Aiden Scott
Tristan (As it is different)
Sebastian

But the problem everytime that I suggest a name partner hates it! So I would love some suggestions also
