Boys name dilemma - sorry to be boring

Having huge problems deciding on a boys name. So far the list is as follows:

Freddie (I like Frederick too but husband doesn't)
Magnus
Tom
George

Bit worried that Freddie has got a bit too chav (with Jade's baby & featuring in Eastenders)and that Magnus is a bit obscure.

My daughter's name is Jemima - which we decided on almost immediatly!

Any opinions most welcome

NatalieJane, I was going to suggest Oliver as a good second name for George but I gusess that is completely out.

Lews,
Of your list I like Tom best.

If we had a boy we were going to call him Arthur..

lilmamma · 29/08/2006 17:07

I love all the old fashioned names, rather than whats in style at the moment.I love Daniel, thats my all time favourite, william, and Anthony also micheal.

Natalie Jane - I knew a George Benedict, which I love, also George Alexander goes well together.

lews, out of your choices I like George and Tom the best. Not fussed on Freddie, but mainly for the reasons you mentioned, and Magnus just isn't my cup of tea, but it is entirely up to you and whatever you choose to name your wee boy, as long as you are confident with it, people will get used to it (if it's more unusual) regardless of their first opinions. I've come round to actually liking many a name I previously wasn't keen on, just because I known someone I like with the name and have become used to saying it.

Gem13 · 29/08/2006 17:30

I love Magnus. I used to know a lovely one - liked by everyone and very beautiful in a masculine way. He did call himself Mag though.

Gem13 · 29/08/2006 17:31

Freddy I like too from 'Room with a View'.

Gem13 · 29/08/2006 17:34

I really like Edgar too. Someone I know has just had one and it wouldn't work with my two.

I always chuck in Ambrose as I love Ambrose.

Every other boy seems to be called Tom/Thomas - great name but he would always be known as Thomas X at school to distinguish him.

Not the case with Jemima or Magnus/Edgar/Ambrose!

southeastastra · 29/08/2006 17:36

bertie like kate bush's son

alexsmum · 29/08/2006 17:40

danceswithmonkeys · 29/08/2006 17:44

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Alot of slating of my son's name here.. Well POO to the lot of you.

lemonaid · 29/08/2006 17:58

Love Magnus. DS has it as a middle name and we seriously considered it as a first name.

misty · 29/08/2006 18:14

I have a George William lovely names!

princessmel · 29/08/2006 18:19

Hi

Out of all those names I'd pick Tom (not mad on thomas) or Freddie. They both go well with Jemima.
David who is nearly 10 (who I childmind for)says he prefers Magnus.

ocd · 29/08/2006 18:20

i knwo a magnus

ocd · 29/08/2006 18:20

what about angus instead?

ocd · 29/08/2006 18:21

adn my cat is claled edgar
it makes poeple larf.

Twiglett · 29/08/2006 18:23

Freddie makes me think of Freddie Mercury

Magnus is just silly in my eyes and would make me silently guffaw if overheard on the street

Tom is good and strong

George also

ocd · 29/08/2006 18:25

tom is overused imo

southeastastra · 29/08/2006 18:51

ooh magnus pike! i loved him

chocolateshoes · 29/08/2006 19:04

Afraid Magnus does sound boffiny.
Like George but there alot.
Tom is good
There are loads of Tobys.

I like Stanley, Samuel, Archie (DS!), and Ted.

Its such fun!

EmilyTurner · 29/08/2006 19:14

I like all the names but would pick Tom out of them all.

I had a girl last time and her name, Molly May, was decided within month four of pregnancy. This time around we are very very stuck. Particularly with boy's names. It doesn't help that my husband seems prepared to call it the most ridiculous of names. I think he has a MAJOR dose of pregnancy hormones. He is thinking Elvis, Brock or Zeus.

Someone take him away!

DelGirl · 29/08/2006 19:22

I know a Magnus too, not keen on the name though.

I like George but think Tom goes better with Jemima otherwise it's a bit of a mouthful if you're saying them together which you may not of course but it's just a thought!

hmmm, not sure about Freddie probably for the same reasons as you.

fattiemumma · 29/08/2006 19:22

I like Tom.

My DS is George, named 6 years ago (7 if you count pregnancy) and it wasn't anywhere near as common as it is now....its quite annoying really lol

his middle names are Stephen Micheal as they are his grandfathers....had to have both as there was no way i would call him George Micheal!

buktus · 29/08/2006 19:25

I have a Jack and Harry if number three had been a boy it would have been Freddie or Max but more likely Theo. I like Tom but the whole tom dick and harry 'thing' might have happened it was a girl in the end anyway so didnt have to think about it, i always think about how much bullying they could get when deciding on a name. Where did you get Jemima from ?

scotchick · 29/08/2006 19:31

love good strong scottish surnames, not everybody's taste I know, like Fraser and Blair..

Hate Magnus, sorry, sounds too boffiny. Tom OK, but v. common, George almost unheard of up here and actually I do quite like Freddie! I know some children called Frank - bleee!

jollyfolly · 29/08/2006 19:33

i like magnus but guess i would worry how people might abbrieviate it... ie Mags. Otherwise all your choices are good.
we had a list of about five names before ds was born and then after he was born could'nt decide which we preferred... ended up picking a totally different name, think we heard someone say it on tv and both at the same time said 'thats a good name we will call him that!'
good luck with birth and stuff
