Help with funeral costs after my brother died suddenly

my brother passed away today suddenly , he had really bad COPD only 55 he's got no savings for a funeral nor have I or my siblings. so can we get a grant from somewhere to help. with his funeral. never had to do that before ,I'm so heartbroken.

the dog the police took he was about 15,but still ok so hopefully they rehomed him but not with other animals he doesn't get on with dogs or cats but on his own they dog is very gentle. it was just a sudden shock of him passing away and I've been called a scam and lying about it but I'm not I had to identify him covered up on the floor as they tried CPR , but didn't save him.

My uncle died with no savings and no direct family and we didn't have money to spend on a funeral - we did direct cremation and then we just hired a nice venue and had a memorial/wake in one which everyone actually said was one of the nicest more personal they'd been to - it probably cost us about £1500 for the direct cremation and the wake/memorial.

I’m sure he would appreciate whatever send off you are able to give him. It’s clear he meant a lot to you and that you’ll do your best to honour his memory.

If you or any of your siblings get universal credit, pension credit or housing benefit you/they maybe able to get help with some of the costs. https://www.gov.uk/funeral-payments

You may also want to consider doing a go fund me for the funeral and wake and put it on Facebook where his friends might see it.

Turn2us also has a list of charities that can support with funds for things, although you usually have to meet certain criteria and I am not sure if there are any that would support with a funeral.

I think you are misunderstanding what a direct cremation is. It’s basically just a cheap cremation where you don’t attend the cremation and get the ashes back to do as you wish. It’s at this point that if you want to have a special service to scatter them or have a wake you can do this. It’s just the disposal of the body is cheaper than a proper / whole funeral with people attending. We had a direct cremation for my Mum, it cost around £1900 (in 2019) and we then scattered the ashes together as a family somewhere she loved.

wouldn’t a coroner ask to identify the body not the ambulance man? But earlier you said the ambulance guy advised you not to see him ???

You can get the DWP funeral grant but the person taking the main responsibility for the funeral needs to be in receipt of certain means tested benefits I think such as universal credit. They will pay towards certain things. The person needs to keep all receipts. the most i've known them give was about £1800 and that was during covid when they seemed to be a bit more generous. I think they will explore whether other close family members can pay though. It's quite strict criteria.
