Planning a catholic funeral any hymns/prayers

Apparently I need 3 pieces of music, entrance and exit and one in the middle.
My choices so far are
Make me a channel of your piece to be played as we enter with words.
Nearer to be thee (Dad's choice)
I also wanted to play Be by Neil diamond during a moment of reflection as I played this as he passed. As for exit music I'm struggling but I really like They prayer instrumental although not sure if it's too sad. I have no idea about prayers except for the Lords prayer. I haven't been to many funerals and never been to a Catholic one before. It won't be held in a Catholic church hoping the vicar will come to us.

We had The Lord Bless You and Keep You (John Rutter), the 23rd Psalm and Panis Angelicus for my Dad. The priest wasn’t supportive of secular music during the service but he didn’t mind about the exit as he said the service was over by then, so we had Take 5 by Dave Brubeck because my Dad loved jazz.

Walk with me oh my Lord - I have sobbed my way through it on too many occasions.

Sorry for your loss.

How Great Thou Art

MissyB1 · 29/09/2025 14:14

At mum's funeral we had her favourite "How Great Thou Art" as mentioned by pp,
"My God loves me"
"Make me a channel of your peace".

On Eagles Wings is beautiful

Be not afraid, a very popular hymn in Irish Catholic funerals. (It's normally the middle hymn)

CliveBixbee · 29/09/2025 14:28

I the Lord of Sea and Sky (Here I am Lord) is a lovely Catholic Hymn for a funeral

FadedRed · 29/09/2025 14:36

Lord of all hopefulness is a nice hymn, the last verse especially suitable for a funeral hymn. Sorry for your loss. 💐

I'd forgotten about that one, its beautiful.

Do you think I would be able to play Be by Neil diamond somewhere? Maybe the exit? I played it to as he passed away so thought it was meaningful but not sure it will fit.

I was going to suggest this, or This Is My Body.

In a Catholic Church? No; absolutely not.

You would need to speak to the priest about this. Some have a more flexible view than others.

We were allowed to play Songbird by Fleetwood Mac in the church for my mum's funeral. We also had a piece of secular instrumental music to leave the church to.
We had 10,000 reasons as it was my mum's favourite modern worship song and Amazing Grace (my chains are gone) as the other music.

Christ be beside me..
I the Lord of Sea and Sky
Be not afraid
Come back to me with all your heart(Hosea)

Ask the priest taking the funeral. (Not a vicar.) And where would it take place, if not in a Catholic Church?

Totallybannanas · 29/09/2025 14:54

Not in a Catholic church

But where, then? I don’t think I’ve ever come across a Catholic funeral taking place anywhere other than a Catholic Church.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/09/2025 14:56

Some priest's will allow secular music to be played, some won’t. I’ve been to plenty of funerals where it’s been allowed for the recessional.

Autisticauldbag · 29/09/2025 14:57

I Watch The Sunrise . Beautiful hymn we used as our exit hymn at my mammy's funeral (Catholic).😭

We have a crematorium, apparently the priest can come to us? Obviously I'm not sure as haven't got that far in planning yet but that's what people have told me. The Catholic church roof has fallen down so can't do it there anyway.

Castlereagh · 29/09/2025 15:00

I was just coming on here to say I watch the Sunrise. We often have this one as the exit song at our friend's and family funerals, it's absolutely beautiful. The only time I've known of secular music was at the end of my uncles, he had a Catholic priest but the funeral service was in the crematorium chapel? Not sure how that was swung though, and the secular music (pink Floyd lol) was right at the as people went out.

Totallybannanas · 29/09/2025 15:00

I really like lord of all hopelessness. I wanted to have a time for reflection and a song to play but not sure what no 🤔
