My darling girl is 18 tomorrow, and I'm not coping well

When I close my eyes and think of her I don't see the ventilator, or the wires, or the feeding tube, or the incubator anymore.

I see her dark brown shock of hair, and her beautiful dark eyes, and her gorgeous skin and tiny feet.

When I think of her now I imagine she's still here and being sassy, wearing too much make up, and deciding where her life was going to take her, because, even after so long, it's too hard to think about her not being here anymore.

She was my first daughter, she was perfect to me, the xrays and tests and doctors said otherwise, but she was just my beautiful little girl.

The girl who I read to for hours a day in the 2 short weeks she lived, the girl who I sang to (and she rolled those beautiful eyes every time I did), and I played music to because good music taste starts when they are babies after all, the girl who loved Hey Diddle Diddle (just as her older brother, who also died did).

18 tomorrow, I can't believe it, the days have been so long, but the years have just been so short.

I never even got to hug her, just hold her gently on a board as she had brittle bones.

Asking the nurse to come and take her off the ventilator when I was ready was the most heartbreaking thing I've ever had to do, the last thing I wanted was for my beautiful girl to die.

And now, here I am, 18 years on, when I should be in the middle of party planning, struggling to get out of bed today.

I hope that her big brother is with her wherever they may be and they are planning a good old knees up together somewhere.

I really feel like I can't take another birthday, but I have to. And I'm not even being a good Mum to my other kids this weekend because I'm just struggling this year, which is making me feel worse still.

I'm so sorry for your loss and for the deep ache this day must bring. An 18th birthday is meant to be a milestone filled with joy and celebration, and I can only imagine how heavy your heart feels without her here.
Her love and presence will always be a part of you and she will never be forgotten, and the bond you share remains unbreakable. I hope you find comfort in your memories of her, in the love that still surrounds you, and in knowing that she will always be your baby girl.
You are in my thoughts today my dear 💐

Oh my love I am so so sorry for the loss of your children.

No wonder you are struggling this weekend. I am sure she is up there with her brother and happy, and celebrating her birthday.

Sending a hug to you and support xxx

It’s alright to struggle. And one day your other children will understand what you have survived and will realise how awesome you are. Hang in there. You will get by.

Thank you all.

My kids understand, thankfully, and they are being great, one teen has walked the dogs and the other made the little one lunch.

I'm usually OK, just a little sad, but we make a cake and sing happy birthday, and we will do that tomorrow again, but this year has just hit me like a ton of bricks, my sons 18th also did, he would be 26 now.

My beautiful Emma deserved more from this life than what she had.

I would have swapped places with her without a second thought.

Happy birthday Emma.
Sending your mum lots of love xxxxx

MybabyEmmaiseighteen · 22/02/2025 16:20

She was amazing, although I'm bias because I'm her Mum I suppose.

I don't have many people irl to talk to anymore, so it's good to be able to talk about her and have her still make an impact on the world in some small way.

Thank you for taking a few minutes out of your day to read about my Emma and acknowledge her. It really does mean the world to me.

Happy birthday to your beautiful Daughter! I'm so sorry OP, you sound like a wonderful Mummy.

MybabyEmmaiseighteen · 22/02/2025 18:07

This is Emma, I've put her photo on MN before, and I've marked it as sensitive as well as she has her ventilator in so it could be distressing for some people. (It's a close up photo of her face and she has the ventilator in, and a feeding tube also).

Hope this is still OK by MN.

But I wasn't lying about how gorgeous she was, such a cheeky wee face. I love showing her off, but people generally get awkward when I do.

Beautiful baby girl. Happy heavenly 18th, Emma 🎈

MybabyEmmaiseighteen · 22/02/2025 19:18

Thank you all.

She was so alert, her mind was absolutely sharp, it was just her poor body that was broken, bless her.

It kills me to think how confused she must have been.

She was such a beautiful little girl. I was truly blessed to have been her Mum.
