He was away diving and I got a phone call this morning to tell me he died. I've had to tell his sister, I don't know what to do with myself. He's half the world away from me and I can't do anything.

There’s no words I can think of that will make this seem any less awful, but we are all so sorry and all here with you xx

TheMadGardener · 19/03/2023 00:28

So sorry for your loss OP.

My DH died in May 2019. In your case I can imagine how sudden and shocking this has been.

Thinking of you.

Bansheed · 19/03/2023 09:26

I can't imagine the shock. Take comfort in that he was loved by you. So, so devastating for you. Have you got help with the repatriation? I hope there are some protocols from the company to help you. Do you need any help with the language. There maybe posters here, if that is the case.

I hope you have some people with you.

lljkk · 19/03/2023 09:42

Do you know how it happened?
Who else do you need to tell, what decisions do you need to make?

fairydust11 · 19/03/2023 09:52

So sorry for your loss 💐

I am so sorry xx

The company who organised the dive will help where they can. It's all so awful, there has to be a post-mortem but from what his friend told me he had a heart attack and died quickly. We weren't married so I'm not next of kin so his son will need to do all the organising with the British Consul and the insurance company. I can't do anything atm and I have no idea how long it will take to bring him home.

My DP's colleague died in Tanzania last year. He had a post mortem and was repatriated in around 16 days. He did die on a work trip, so the company had control and robust protocols.

How is your relationship with his children? Are ypu able to lean on each other?

So sorry for your loss. Sending love and hugs

redastherose · 19/03/2023 18:10

I get on really well with his kids and the res of his family but we all live all over the world. It's made worse by differing time zones and having to wait to speak to each other.

It's stupid things that make me go to pieces, seeing his dressing gown on the back off the door, stupid stuff like that.
