what is normal for a 6 week m/c?

I just miscarried at 6 weeks, and as was bleeding heavily opted for a natural clearance. As soon as I got home the bleeding eased off however, and the pain intensified- I nearly blacked out. Anyone know if this is normal, or whether it wil go on like this? Not sure I can cope if so, but have missed this week's opportunity for a procedure apparently. Can these things be done privately if neccesary? Any knowledge welcome, I'm totally at sea

I really feel for you. They really don't tell you what to expect! I think your body goes through a smaller version of labour and it really is agonising, it kept me awake for a whole night and the only thing that helped was a warm bath.

If you have passed more then your natural period and a clot then it may be over. Are you in constant pain?

I hate to say though it can take some time. I miscarried at about 8 weeks and it must have taken another week to actually miscarry.

If you are at all worried go to A&E they usually are much more helpful and will ask the questions that help to work out whether it has happened or not.

I am not sure if you can get it done privately.

HI There... your hospital should have an early pregnancy unit. Give them a call... if you are in pain then they should be able to help. You should not have to suffer any more. Take care of yourself... Rahrah X

thank you ladies, really helpful. I'm not in constant pain pain, I'm getting bad surges every couple of hours, and in between just zonked. I'll run a bath, thanks so much x

I'm sorry to hear your news ladypanda

I had a missed m/c at 10 weeks, baby was only 6 week size. i had teh scan and lots of bleeding and very large clots and was in a lot of pain. i didn't know until i posted oin here that i could go to hosp for pain relief i felt like i was in labour

i will find the thread i started asking for more info

its not a pleasant read and it probably TMI in places. I can't bring myself to read it but i found it very helpful at the time to know what to expect

thank you for sharing it, it was very useful. They don't tell you much in the hospital do they... I hope you're doing ok now after it all, we're telling ourselves it must be doing something positive to our long-term karma but it's pretty hard to swallow at times. These pages are a great help x

The other thing i would say is to talk through how u r feeling with someone close to you.(or here if there is no one) I didn't and really wish i had as i am still pretty raw. I tend to stay away from these threads but somethng about your OP made me post.

thank you so much for your thoughts. It's rough isn't it. My husband is being wonderful, and we can talk, but I feel stuck in this awful limbo where I'm neither one nor the other. We'd been ttc for a long time which doesn't help. I just feel dead really. I hope it passes soon

Hi Ladypanda, sorry to hear you are going through this.

I m/c at the end of August at just over 7 weeks but I didn't have too much pain and from starting on the Monday, actually m/c on the Friday then things started to ease really quickly. There was quite a few clots but not much heavier than a period for me.

But when we went into Hospital when I first started bleeding they said to get back in touch if the pain got bad and paracetomol didn't help so it may be worth getting back in touch, the EPAU were really good also.

It is a horrible time and does help to talk about it, but things will get better in time. Sounds like you have a very supportive dh which is a big help. Take care of yourself.

thank you beaner, I hope you're doing ok now. The pain has eased off, but so has the bleeding (even though I know from the scan there's a lot to come out). I'll just have to wait I guess. It's really helpful to hear other experiences.

I just wanted to add that i've had two miscarriages and both were very painful, one i had to be admitted to hospital and the last one (last year) went on for three weeks. the hospital for the first miscarriage could have been better, the second time (a different hospital) they were fab. i found it helpful initially to go to a miscarriage support group which you can find out about from the miscarriage association (based in wakefield)... it helps too to talk to other women who've had miscarriages - there are lots more women out there than you think who have miscarried, its just people don't really talk about it.

Sorry to be back again, but I'm worried- I've not relly bled for two days, but the pain is getting worse, and today I feel very spaced out and keep falling asleep, did anyone else have this? I was expecting heavy bleeding and decreasing pain, not the other way round. I'm worried about infection of some sort. I'm due at the EPU on friday for a scan but am wondering whether I should go in earlier in case all is not well.
Any guidance welcome x

If i were you i would try and get in earlier than Fri, when i had my m/c a few weeks ago they told me to ring asap if i felt unwell or had pain. I didnt have any pain so cant give any useful advice re that aspect im afraid.

No harm in getting yourself checked. Sorry you are having a bit of a pants time of it.

hello ladypanda, hope you've phoned emergency doctor or EPU up for reassurance... every miscarriage is different...i had very little bleeding at all and lots of pain for my first, and for my second lots of pain and lots of bleeding but intermittently...you feeling spaced out may not be surprising given the shock your bodys going through - its important to be taking care of yourself...

thanks all. In fact this afternoon I've passed what I reckon must have been the sac, nothing like I've ever seen before. And am suddenly feeling much better, I think the pain was leading up to that maybe? Thanks for all support, much appreciated x

It could be landypanda, so sorry u r going thru this If you continue to feel bad though i would ring the EPU, even if they just reassure u over the ohone its better than wondering if what u r feeling is "righT".

hi again ladypanda, sorry to hear that, not pleasant experience, once sac passed all pain tends to vanish very quickly, presume you're still going to EPU friday for ultrasound...? does sound like everythings come away naturally though ... ps hope you're not on your own tonight

Hi Ladtpanda-I hope you are doing ok. Hopefully now you've passed the sac it should get better, how are you coping mentally with it all-I know I found that stage quite traumatic.

I'm very sorry, ladypanda, that you too have had to go through this. I think I passed the sac, or parts of it, during my 2nd mc, and although the pain was not so bad, it was pretty frightening.
It is important to still go for the scan. my mc (the one I referred to above) was incomplete and I had to have a D&C as well - this might well not be the case with you, but it's important to check.
Even more important: take good care of yourself.

I am not a doctor, but it sounds as though your body is trying to expel something- the large surges sound like contractions to me. Hope you're feeling better soon. I do not see any reason why they should not treat you if you are in pain and losing a lot more blood than a normal period at 6 weeks. Give the early pregnancy unit a call if it not bearable- that's part of their job.

thanks everyone, it really helps. I'm feeling much better physically, a bit empty emotionally but that's understandable I guess. I've got good support all around me. I am still going in to EPU tomorrow, hopefully it has all gone naturally.
Thanks again for everyone's messages, I wish I'd known about mumsnet when I had an ectopic two years ago x

Hi Ladypanda, just to say hope you are doing OK and thinking of you today going back to he EPU.

I know I was a nervous wreck going back for the scan and to the EPU. Let us know how things went, if you are up to it - take care.

oh ladypanda, i feel for you, 5 weeks ago i had my 3rd mc at 7 weeks and it was devestating. it didn't help that the nurse at a&e said "so its just a bad period then". please allow yourself to grieve. and ill keep everything crossed for you

ps if you're worried see your doc. i bled for 10 days the last time and i thought i was going to die. x
