Does your 6 year old know how babies are made?

Ds has been coming home from school with incorrect info (playground chatter I think)

Yesterday he said "To make a baby you have to know the F word don't you?" he didn't know what teh F word was and asked me.

So, off I go to the library today to get a book aimed at kids on the reproductive system. I had a quick flick through and had a bit of a wobble at the penis goes into vagina bit. Is he too young to know this?

Anyway, we get home from school, ds finds the book and flicks through it himself, howling at the pictures of willy's, vagina's and bottoms.

Which makes me think he is too immature.

What do your kids know?

Thank you for the link friendlypizzaeater and I agree with you Nooka that I shouldn't be embarassed by the ivf - but it just felt complicated iyswim.

No worries. I think that children like that complication though. My two certainly were very interested in the details of my c-sections (esp the more guresome bits ). You don't need to give them much in the wy of detail about why you had to have IVF if you don't want to. My two accepted the idea that my womb wasn't good at pushing them out, what they wanted to hear about was the parts specific to themselves.

My parents read this to me from when I was about 3 and so we never had those really awkward embarassing conversations later on in life. Vividly remember the illustration of the baby coming out to this day!

i learnt everything i know from reading a dirty book called 'The Pearl' (not the Steinbeck one!) hidden in my mother's bedroom

my dd knows how babies are made and how they come out, but not how daddy gives the seed to mummy

mummyloveslucy · 27/09/2008 21:24

No, but my 3 year old knows where they come out off!!

noonki · 27/09/2008 21:28

Lostgirl - I want that book, the baby coming out with his hands out is the funniest thing I have ever seen!

My parents were very upfront about it all and we have been the same with DSS and plan to with DS's

My 3 year old asked last week where babies come from (he turned 3 last week) - I told him Mummy and Daddy and a magic cuddle with no clothes on and Daddy put a seed in my tummy, and he has been telling everyone one since that I have a baby in my tummy because of Daddy's magic cuddle

ds1 is 6 and knows that ladies have an egg and men have a seed which join together to make a baby. ds2 (3) vaguely knows too. they know where the baby comes frpm - in fact ds2 has taken great delight in telling all the staff at nursery how ds3 'just popped out of my mum's lady bits really quickly' in the last fortnight

ds1 told me that you dont need to be married to have babies but 'you got to havea lot of love' - which i found quite amusing!
