my son thinks he is a cat!

For a good few weeks now, ds (3 in couple weeks) thinks he is a cat! When he comes in to see me in bed in the mornings, he miaows! He crawls all day on his hands and knees, talking in a squeky voice, 'need pussy cat food, pussy cat be, pussy cat mummy'. He talks about his fur and tail!
I would add that we don't have a cat!
I am wondering if he was a cat in a previous life! When he has a ferocious tantrum, the only way I can get him to calm down is to miaow to him! it started as a game , but seems to be taking over his life now. Last night he was looking for food in my cupboards, and I said no because I was cooking dinner. He moaned so I said it was pussy cat dinner (to stop a tantrum), and his face lit up and said 'Is it a mouse?!!!!' It was salmon (a close second cat favorite!) Does anyone else have a child who behaves like this??!!

AWWW, I think that's sweet. GS was in bed last night (actually 4 o'clock this morning) Barking like a dog and then Mooing like a cow - at least they have imagination

Yes, my DS gets on his hands and knees and miaows at us. He asks for pussycat drink (we hold his cup, bottle while he's on his hands and knees). He also gives us pussycat kisses. That's a big slobbery lick on the cheek. We confuse him further by putting him in doggy pyjamas (he loves them).
He's probably just playing. Take photos, make notes and discuss it with his first girlfriend.

DS2 went through this, at about the same age. Only he was a puppy

my younger brother insisted he had a tail and spent months with a belt hanging out of his trousers at the back!It was becoming quite a problem i think but he,s 25 now with no lasting probs!

no but must tell you my brother did this when he was really young hes 23 now and boy do we still laugh but i promise he dont still think he's a cat although after his cat experience he decieded to be a horse!!!! bro used to crawl around the floor meowwing and rub against our legs, mam at the time was concerned but he grew out of it ...

Dss was like this too but was a puppy used to bring us his 'leash'(piece of ribbon) so that we could go for walks.

And I know a 3 year old who likes to be a horse. He's got a very convincing 'neigh' too.

When DD2 was in infant school, I was coming back from town on the bus which passed her school. It was break time and I scanned the yard for DD, only to see her kick another child who was on her hands and knees on the floor. The child scuttled off on her hands and knees. Horrified, I got off at the next stop and ruched to the school to see DD and her 'friend' playing quite happily. I told a teacher what I had seen and we spoke to DD and the girl. Apparently, they were playing at house, the friend was the dog and DD was the dad, pretending to kick the dog - (something her own father did regularly). Not funny for the dog - but it just shows that kids think the oddest things are normal if an adult does them.

That's so sweet, I used to look after my nephew who insisted he was a tiger and would roar at me all the time, very embarrassing in public! He sounded scarily realistic, funny at first but it wore thin after a while though, had to stop him watching the lion king!

Dd 2y makes believe that she's Bumpy Dog (from Noddy) and ds 4y likes to dress up in an old grey hoody of mine and dd's bunny ears and makes believe that he's Little Grey Rabbit (his own invention). Sometimes he crawls around and miaows as a cat. But neither of them take it quite to tigi's ds's extremes! How cute they all are .

I used to play dragons too Snugs and in my games the dragon always beat the knight. Got quite a few dragon ornaments at home too

My 3 year old ds is like this all the time at the moment, but he constantly changes what he is so I can't keep up . Often he is a tiger or a crocodile, but for days he can be 'daddy' or 'buzz lightyear', and if you don't get his name right you're in trouble.
Please tell me this stage doesn't last long though!

I also used to canter round the coffee table and whinnee when the theme music to Black Beauty came on. My mother takes great delight in telling people about this.

Don't sing it, I'm 32, don't have a coffee table and may feel the urge to gallop round the dining table. This is bad because I'll run into the wall.

tigi, ds1 used to be a cat (Tom Kitten to be precise) - we had months of it, it coincided with him starting at pre-school, so about the same age as your ds. They thought he was autistic because he wouldn't speak/make eye contact/interact with the other children - I said no, he's just a cat. He did grow out of it eventually. I know it sounds amusing but it drives you crazy, doesn't it? Ds1 didn't speak at all for two whole weeks - I kept thinking he would wake up and forget but he didn't - just carried on being Tom Kitten (the odd mewing noise, washing face with paws etc.) Much sympathy.
