Just wondering - how many words does your 20month old say?

Just want to know if my DD is on track? She only says one word, not 2 following. When do they start doing 2 words?

At 20 months I was worried because my ds was saying a handful of single words. I asked my hv about it, and she said that if children are saying less than 10 single words at two, they refer them to a speech therapist.

I needn't have worried though, he will be two next month and says loads of single words and has just started to string two - and sometimes - three words together - sit down, oh please mamma (very cute)...

I don't think there is a 'normal' - and, like someone said, language can come in explosions rather than a steady learning curve...

joedar - ta tu ceart. You must be Irish yourself if you figured it out from my name. Still live in Ireland too but find Mumsnet way better than any Irish parenting sites I've tried.

My dd's current favourite word is Dora. She loves Dora the Explorer even though she doesn't watch it on TV. She got a Dora doll for Christmas and all I hear these days is DO RA. She loves looking at a toy catalogue and can say Barney too.

Ds just turned 20 months and can say alot. Has been a proper parrot from quite early on. Not sure he understands half of what he says but is making simple sentences and requests 'coat off please', 'maisy video on' etc. His cousin1 started talking alot later -they were concerned - but is extremely bright and eloquent for his age. Cousin2 started very early and is pretty average now!!

FWIW my ds went from single words to sentances in just a couple of months (via 2 words strung together but that didn't last long).
