Just wondering - how many words does your 20month old say?

Just want to know if my DD is on track? She only says one word, not 2 following. When do they start doing 2 words?

My DD is now 22 months and has only just started saying Pooh Bear which is her first 2 word sentence. In the last month her list of single words has realy expanded. One of my pals had her DS speaking almost sentences at 1 and another one took until they were 2 1/2 so I'm just hoping for something inbetween!

GreenGlassGoblin · 09/01/2008 14:11

I think DS was saying 2 or 3 together but they were mostly direct quotes of me! They're all different, I think this words thing comes in 'explosions' - suddenly everything changes and they're chattering away!

IdrisTheDragon · 09/01/2008 14:16

At 20 months DD wasn't saying much.

Now at 2.3 she talks in proper sentences and has been for a month or so. So I suppose two words came somewhere inbetween (sorry I am rubbish at knowing when my children did anything ).

tasjaSAmuminUK · 09/01/2008 14:17

DD says about 16 words. Understands things I say. Repeats some words I say.

it varies so much
dd1 and dd2 were early talkers, talking loads by 18/20 months.
dd3 doesn't say much at all apart from mama dada and no. she is 15 months

suiledonn · 09/01/2008 14:20

My dd just turned 20 months and like yours she says lots of single words but it is only in the last few days that she has used some two-word sentences. Lat night dh helped her with something and she said 'ta you' for thank you for the first time. She also says 'mama more' when she wants more of something, 'oh no' when she spills or pretends to fall over and 'no way' when she says no and really means it!
I find it funny though that she still has no discernable word for yes. I really wish she was talking more as she is getting frustrated when we don't understand her.

tori32 · 09/01/2008 14:22

DD is now 2 tomorrow and could speak 2 words together at 20mths with too many words to count (350ish at 18mths). She is advanced though, not normal. Normal is approx 50 words and start putting 2 words together at 2yrs. Lots of children, like my minded girl, said hardly anything for ages then at 23mths began speaking in 4-5 word sentences. Its just different rates of development and usually levels out as they reach school age. Being slower to speak does not mean they will be slower at school. They tend to be the listeners who take lots in.

hana · 09/01/2008 14:23

tori32 - did you actually count the words your daughter could say at 20 months? who has time for that?!

FriedGreenTomatoes · 09/01/2008 14:25

My DD can put up to 3 words together - e.g. "Daddy go door". But I think it is really varied at this age how they progress.

tori32 · 09/01/2008 14:31

Hana yes I did count because I am a childminder and am used to doing observations of minded children!
Also, I thought her developmental check was at 18mths and thought I would look silly if the health visitor asked and I didn't know, given what I do!! They moved the check to 2yrs

Chaotica · 09/01/2008 15:00

DD manages 2-3word sentences, but at the same age as her I just spoke in grunts As FGTomatoes and other posters said, it varies.

tortoiseSHELL · 09/01/2008 15:02

Well my 20 month old doesn't say anything. Or walk.

Actually, I think he can say hello, no, dada, cup, tap, duck, dog. But they all sound a bit like 'da'.

Angiebabes · 09/01/2008 15:27

TortoiseSHELL my DS is 20 months and only crawls, he can walk with me or DH holiding one hand, and he coasts round table or sofa, but not enough confidence to go it alone, I'm getting bit worried and annoyed at everyone asking us "Is he walking yet??"
He can say "hiya", dada, juice, hello, chocco yum and ta

tortoiseSHELL · 09/01/2008 19:08

Angiebabes - is your ds your 1st? I would be really worried about ds2 if he wasn't my 3rd and I didn't have time to be. I logically think he is fine - he communicates really well, points at stuff, cruises round, and I think in reality he is just trying to gain confidence before taking that step to independent walking. Both my other 2 walked at 12 months so this is new territory!

My only thought with ds2 is that his feet are incredibly small - only just a size 3, so harder to balance. Ds1 was a 3.5 at 9 months!

I am sure the communication is the thing to be most aware of - if they're making themselves understood and engaging then they're probably fine.

I know what you mean about everyone asking - ds2 is really small as well, so the first thing people ask me is if he's 1 yet, then when I say he's 20 months they go into the old routine 'Is he walking yet? No? Oh. Well I bet he's chattering away. Oh. Not. Oh. Are you really worried about him?'

Angiebabes · 09/01/2008 20:15

TortoiseSHELL, yes he is our first, and the only real concern I have is the walking thing....he fully understands what you say to him, like after dinner DH will ask him for his bib, which he takes off and hands to Daddy!
He calls his buggy Bug, says juice, Dada, Mum, ta, hiya, ta ta, chocco (for chocolate) and says mmmmmmmmmmm if he is eating something he is really enjoying.
But I really wish he would walk....he has taken solo steps in nursery, until he was clocked and then plonked himself on his bum,
DS has size 5 feet, and can crawl like grease lightening, and is up the stairs before you can blink.
These kids sure know how to worry us Mummy's!

barcelonababe · 09/01/2008 20:21

we are a multilingual family and at 19 months we have recently, sad but true, spent a whole evening creating a chart with all the words she says in spanish and english.. we counted 80 words - 75% english, 25% spanish and a few catalan words.
my mum says i used to be a chatter box myself at my daughters age so i think it is in the family!

i am all the time chatting away like a mad hatter!

Weegle · 09/01/2008 20:22

DS is not quite 20 months - he has literally just in the last week started putting two words together. His are "yes please" "oh no" "and that" - so a bit random and definitely parrotting me. Not sure how many single words he has, maybe 100 ish. His speech has literally exploded in the last 6 weeks. I'd say he's learning 3 or 4 new words a day. But he's still not massively clear - not everyone can understand everything. When do they get cleaer?

DavidTennantsMistress · 09/01/2008 20:25

my DS seems to enjoy repeating things - he's coming out wiht 2 words (just) at 23 months incl 'take down' 'all gone' 'no more' 'oh dear' 'get down' tbh it's all things I say to him a lot.

he's got 2 3 word phrases which are 'cuppa tea (courtasy of dad) and oh dear neeeema (nevermind)' again all words I say to him a lot.

have you spoken to your HV about it?

Ds has about 100 or more words but no two word sentences yet unless you count "bye Mummy/Daddy etc" But he has several friends who don't say more than 5-10 individual words so I think if your Dd has single words she's probably right on track

kentgirl73 · 09/01/2008 20:35

My little boy is nearly 26 months and says mummy, his sister at 18 mths was singing songs, am not too concerned, altho have been told he should be saying more, thing is he knows exactly what you want, his understaning of speech is excellent, along with his memory, reckon he is just lazy!

CatIsSleepy · 09/01/2008 20:35

hana
ok am a bit anal about this
have been keeping a record of dd's words because I think it's really interesting
she has about 50-60 words
however longest longest sentence so far has been 'woof no' (repeated ooh about 100x) when a bit traumatised by my FIL's dog

favourite words, cake, biccie and toast

joedar · 09/01/2008 20:37

Like suile donn my dd 21 is saying " tha u" 'oh no" "more peese" and 2 liners like that and will repeat words after us. But generally she only knows about 20 words for things herself without being prompted.

My older kids have managed to teach her how to copy the little baby from meet the fockers when he says ass hole but luckily enough she gets it backwards and says hole ass!! so it does not sound all that bad!!

And yes I did have words with the older kids for teaching her it, but I can't repeat the words I used!!! LOL ! Like mother like daughter!!

Suiledonn, an bhfuil tu cailin gaeilge?

fordfiesta · 09/01/2008 20:39

ds said practically nothing at that age well except NO! and choc choc (still his two favorites) now at 2.5 we cant shut him up!

lubyluby · 09/01/2008 20:42

my dd is almost 22 months and i wouldn;t say she talks a great deal, she does endless 'chatter' so babble thast not really any words. she says a few thigns quite clearly, like mummy, daddy, nana, chocolate, sweeties , pretty, fifi, dora and her brothers names and other genaeral words like car, dinner, juice, but not really putting tow words together.

but hses my third so i'm not too worried as with ds1 he talked really well and ahd proper conversations with him form around 18 months old (ok they were about thomas the tank engine etc) and then ds2 was barely speaking at two we had some speech therapy as the hv said he was very late, then all of a sudden about 28 months old he just started talkign and now hes never quiet!
