At what age did your child know their full name?

Just wondering!

DD knows her first name, but refuses to recognise that she has two others (middle and last) - when I say to her 'your name is xxx xxx lovecat', she gives me this look like we're quite insane and says 'no mummy, I'm xxx'.

She's 2.8 Not in any way concerned about it, just wondering when they start taking that sort of info on board?

DS1 knows his - has done for ages - he's 3.6.

DS2 knows his first name. He's 21m. So somewhere between those two ages, I think

mishymoo · 15/11/2007 11:44

DS knows his first and surname but doesn't recognise his second name (it's the same as his dads first name so he just thinks its daddy). He is 2.4

Seeing as we lumbered poor dd with 2 middle names and 2 surnames (well at least she'll have plenty of choice when shes older) it took her a while to know them all. She knew her first and last names by 3 (I think) and now recognises her two middle names but am not sure if she could tell someone what they are. Come to think of it she did go through that phase of insisting on just her first name but I cant remember when it was exactly.

wildfish · 15/11/2007 11:59

My neice was the same, always said thats not her name, and DS funnily enough also was the same at first, only accepting the first name. But not sure when he moved to accepting his whole name, 3?

belgo · 15/11/2007 12:00

DD1 is three and a half and now knows her surname. It's never even occured to me to tell her she has a middle name!

Troutpout · 15/11/2007 12:11

ds knew it (in a reciting kind of way if you asked him) at 1 (he spoke very early)
dd was about 2

DynamicNanny · 15/11/2007 12:15

Some of the children I work with it knew at 1 - some learnt it by 3 years of age

terramum · 15/11/2007 15:54

DS (3.4yrs) knew his first name at 2ish I think and grasped his surname at 3 ish & has picked up his surname in the last month.

Fennel · 15/11/2007 16:00

I don't think my 3.5 year old does. she tends to only respond to a shortened version of her name and deny ownership of the full, longer name.

My others only learnt their surnames when they went to school as we never use them at home.

in fact I'm not convinced any of my 3 would be able to write their name correctly including middle name and surname, and the oldest are 7 and 6 - will test them tonight.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 15/11/2007 16:00

DD1 is 2.8 and knows all the full names in the family. I can't remember with DS.

lacarte · 15/11/2007 16:30

2 and a bit, first and surname but not middle name - but complicated by nursery staff being unable to pronounce his surname so poor lamb kept getting it wrong too.

hayCHingleBells · 15/11/2007 16:31

2ish

CarGirl · 15/11/2007 16:31

my 5.5 year old forgets/can't remember her middle names

IdrisTheDragon · 15/11/2007 16:35

DS is 3.11 and has known first name, middle name and surname for probably about a year. Could well be more. He did express surprise a few days ago that everyone doesn't have the same surname .

DD is 2.1 and I think knows her first name and surname but I'm not totally sure.

Hulababy · 15/11/2007 16:41

DD knew her first name from way before 2, and her full name before around 2 I would think. I know she had to find her name at nursery - so this would have reinforced it.

sagitta · 15/11/2007 16:45

It probably depends on how complicated the name is...

Fennel · 15/11/2007 17:12

Cargirl, I'm glad it's not just mine

DD1 knows hers, has done for a while, she is 3.4yrs

DD2 hasnt a clue, but she doesnt talk either so is a bit delayed in that respect. She is 2.1yrs. You ask her what her name is and she says "me"

Slouchy · 15/11/2007 17:31

I suppose dd1 was 3 ish.
dd2 thinks her full name is Nickname-lassie-lambkin cos that's what we call her most often. Aah.

MioMao · 15/11/2007 17:31

DD is 2.7 and only knows her first name. I have tried to teach her her surname a few times, but it hasn't sunk in yet. This is probably because she has never needed to know it - she doesn't go to nursery or pre-school yet, has only ever been looked after by family, so is only very rarely called by her full name. I will persevere though - I like the idea of Califrau's songs!

beautifulgirls · 16/11/2007 10:42

Mine don't know theirs yet (3.2 for DD#1) but we had a conversation a couple of days ago about it with them. When I told DD#1 her name in full she just said NO! I then told her DD#2 full name and she told me she wanted to be * that being the middle name of DD#2! It also happens to be the first name of a good friend of hers though, so maybe that is why she likes it so much. I guess you never can win!

hana · 16/11/2007 10:45

this is something you either teach them or don't
dd2 knwos her full name, has done since about 2.5 dd1 probably a bit earlier than that as she was a pfb

Niecie · 16/11/2007 10:49

Can't remember for sure but I know it only became an issue when they both started nursery at 2.9yrs so they definitely knew it by then. I would say DS1 knew it quite a while before that but probably not DS2. They both knew they had middle names as I used to call them by their full name when I was being pretend cross with them. It was tagging the surname on that took the time.

trockodile · 16/11/2007 15:55

My DS (2.6) insists his name is Harry Potter and refuses to tell anyone his proper name!
