Has anyone else's child cruised for MONTHS before they could walk?

Okay, 4 months to be precise.

Crawling at 9 months, cruising at 11 and at 15 months still not walking.

I'm so bored of people asking about her walking...should I be getting concerned that she has been cruising for so long but hasn't walked yet (aside from taking 2 or 3 steps ONCE about 3 weeks ago)?

yes.
dd started walking just before one but had been cruising on furniture for ages, not sure exactly how long but prob since 7 months i think. When she did walk she was good very quick though due to cruising practice, she also pushed a trolley with bricks in along.

FromGirders · 16/10/2007 13:12

Yep, dd did. Mine were both late walkers - ds crawled at 12 months but didn't walk until 17. (mo that is!)
DD crawled a bit earlier, perhaps 10 months, then was cruising from 15 months then didn't walk til 18. You know the way most kids take one step one day, three a couple of days later and the following week they're running? Well not here. She did "look at me I can do three steps" in the February, then didn't actually walk until May. You can't tell now, so don't worry!

jelliebelly · 16/10/2007 13:19

my ds was crawling at 9 months, cruising at around 12 months but not walking till 18 months- he is now 2 and there is no stopping him!

babybore · 16/10/2007 13:23

Thanks. It just seems a bit strange to me when she started crawling and cruising at very "normal" times, not to start walking at say, 13 months. But hey when were babies ever predictable?

She has a couple of pushalong trollies that she loved at around a year but is now pretty bored with (unless she sits/stands on them and you push her along ).

It's just this big lapse between cruising and walking that I'm interested in other people having experienced as well.

thanks jelliebellie, that's reassuring.

and another one here

CarGirl · 16/10/2007 13:33

one of mine cruised for around 3-4 months, I think it was a confidence thing, she would walk around pushing one of those lighweight doll buggies that do not support their balance at all put she wouldn't go solo!

lindenlass · 16/10/2007 13:39

Yup. DD1 1 crawled at 5m; cruised at 9m and didn't walk unaided until 15m but when she did she never fell over She's a perfectionist. DD2 and DD3 are way more gung-ho. DD2 walked at 11.5m and DD3 has just started at 9.5m!!!! They just don't care about falling over! DD1 walked holding on to one hand for what seemed like forever but, like I say, was pretty perfect at walking when she did do it alone.

twelveyeargap · 16/10/2007 13:39

According to family folklore, I cruised from 4.5mths , until I was just over one year...

Bundle · 16/10/2007 13:40

my girls both cruised from about 6 months, a couple of weeks after they crawled. they didn't actually walk unaided until about a year...

pigletmaker · 16/10/2007 13:41

don't be concerned - every child has different milestones in their development. you'll wish he was still cruising when he's running around like a rocket!

lindenlass · 16/10/2007 13:42

And you'll have to start paying to buy her proper shoes

yes. ds has been crusing since 11 months. he is now 15 months and still not walking.

mufti · 16/10/2007 13:47

same - ds 15m prefers crawling to cruising - unless he is pushing his brick trolley
he will even wriggle down to crawl if i "walk" him holding his hands

babybore · 16/10/2007 13:47

Excellent, am definitely not on my own here

Will field the 'not walking yet' comments for as long as necessary then!

My friends ds didn't walk until he was 2.3

She took him to the GP when he was 2 cos she was worried and he told her they don't start worrying until after they pass 2 years 3 months. seems her ds already knew this

hunkermunker · 16/10/2007 13:59

Both boys did - DS1 crawled at 10m, cruised at 11 and walked at 17mo and DS2 crawled at 7m, cruised at 9 and walked at 14mo.

kerala · 16/10/2007 14:04

babybore snap. Have 15 month old that has been cruising for 4 months. I have tried encouraging her to walk independently but shes cottoned on to that and responds by saying nonono and shaking her head.

Occasionally when she is isnt thinking about it she will take a couple of steps. It seems to be more a case of "can walk won't walk". So in her own time I suppose but glad Im not the only one as she is the oldest in her NCT group of 10 and the others are all charging off while she hangs onto my legs.

ValnBen · 16/10/2007 14:18

Another one here. Crawled at around 6/7 months ? was cruising at 10/11 months.
Would walk for miles (round and round the lounge) holding my finger.
Turned in to his favourite pastime but no sign of walking unaided. Would sit down immediately if I tried to remove my finger.
Then at 14 months (to the day) I decided to change tack with him and instead of letting him hold my finger I walked behind him holding him by the waist. After a few trips up and down the lounge like this I let go?..he?d gone a couple of dozen steps before he noticed?never looked back since. Seemed to miss out the ?don?t know how to stop? bit though. Guess this was because he?d really been walking for nearly 4 months already.
He's 5 now and can run like the wind!

nappyaddict · 16/10/2007 14:20

i'm going to get some reins for ds to walk on. my friends dd lacked confidence to let go of her hand so she started usin reins and one day loosed them without her dd realising.

incogneato · 16/10/2007 14:20

yep
dd1 never crawled
cruised at seven months
walked at thirteen months
6 months!
she inly walked when she was very good at it - she didn't tolerate falling over!

babybore · 16/10/2007 14:31

keala and nappyaddict - maybe we should form a club.

Can you believe one of my friend's (with a kid the same age - walking since 11 months natch) actually called my dd a "dunce"!

As if early walking is linked to intelligence in later life...tsk...

annoyingdevil · 16/10/2007 17:37

DD cruised at 7 mths and didn't walk until just after her first birthday. Make that a whopping 5 mths of cruising!

lily333 · 16/10/2007 20:40

Lol,I can totally relate to the op. Our DS started cruising, and worse - climbing anything within a 20metre radius - at about 8 months......but he only got to the walking outside in the street (therefore needing shoes, ouch the expense!)about 3 weeks ago at the age of 15 months. And now already crawling is a thing of the past, wish I could say the same about his climbing!
