Hi,

My 22 month old son has been looking from corner of his eyes while walking since last 6 months and now he does it even while sitting. We took him to neurologist - he asked us a lot of qts and also evaluated/observed him closely during appointment and said everything seems perfectly fine with him but did mention that looking out from corner of the eyes is one of the symptom of autism and would like to see us in 6-8 months. I was wondering, if someone had similar experience and was their kid diagnosed with ASD or did he/she just grow out of it in few months and is doing perfectly fine now.
We have started giving him Nordic Fish oil since last 1 week. Hoping desperately that it helps him to stop looking from corner of his eyes.
We are also seeing OT next week. I pray to god everyday to make him stop doing it.

Has he had his eyes tested?

ForeverBaffled · 13/09/2019 18:29

Have you tried using the MCHAT screener for ASD? It might give a bit of guidance :)

Yes. Pediatric Optometrist said every looks perfectly fine.

I took the MCHAT and that was fine too. Risk score is '0'

Wondering what else I could do to make him stop doing it

If the mchat score was zero and this is his only 'worrying' behaviour, I think you need to calm down. Children this age do things like this. When my DD was a similar age she would rock back and forth violently in her pram and high chair, it looked most alarming! She also went through a phase of doing funny things with her eyes - she was just experimenting. She is nearly five now and she is neurotypical.

ForeverBaffled · 13/09/2019 20:03

Totally agree with previous poster that if he scores a 0 on the Mchat then I honestly wouldn’t worry at all. Toddlers do weird things! My 21 month old scores a 0 too yet he also sometimes tip toe walks and lines up his trains which Dr Google says are red flags. Except in this context they aren’t and the same with your son. Take care!

I used to do it and I'm not autistic AFAIK. I did it when I was concentrating hard (e.g. watching TV, which is why my parents initially wondered whether I could see alright). I didn't do it when I was walking though or doing things close up like drawing. But the harder I had to concentrate while looking at something in the distance like the blackboard, the further my head turned. This meant things got bad around the age 13, though I did grow out of it at around 14-15.
Apart from an unrelated eye disease that started I think at 19 (typical), I'm fine.

Thanks. I just hope & pray that he stops looking from corner of his eyes soon!!

My son is 5 years old now and he is doing perfectly fine. He is in Sr kg. And no concerns at all whatsoever. Also he has stopped looking from corner of his eyes. We just had to be Lil patient.

Mis96 · 19/03/2024 00:25

Hi,

My 18 month old boy has been doing the same since two three months.
he has no other traits of autism, however i catch him casually zoning out and side eyeing.. sometime whilst having food, standing m, sitting… he just randomly starts to side eye. I’m extremely worried.. I dont know what to do.

i would be grateful if someone could share their experiences.

many thanks

What was the reason what said doctors no autism thats means that normal toddler can does it too the side glancing ?

Shae222 · 19/09/2024 05:26

Did the Nordic fish oil help my toddler has been doing this for four months.I got his eyes checked nothing wrong. He also has been tested for autism which I was told he doesn't have.

Sensory processing disorder is the cause of the side glancing. Lots of kids have SPD, but they don’t have autism, I think the numbers are that 80% of spd kids just grow out of it.

Erdalsmum · 24/09/2024 09:34

Thanks alot whay can we do for Sensory processing disorder does thode kids need anythıng how can i hrlp my son ?
