What can I mix with baby rice

Just wondering if anyone has mixed anything with baby rice? DS isn't too keen I think it might be a bit bland for him.

Any ideas thanks in advance

Give him some pureed proper food and ditch the rice

You don't need baby rice.

Try mashed potato or pureed carrot or parsnip etc

I used to mash banana into it for DD. That seemed to make it a bit more palatable. She also loved it with stewed pears.

I remember the day DH came in from work to find me stirring a bowl of mush and asked what it was. I told him it was baby rice with banana and breast milk. He said "Mm. And what's DD having...?"

I agree. Baby rice is a waste of time.

Give fruit and veg as finger food if your baby is 6 months or older.

If not then I wouldn't bother with food at all, but if you must, then puréed 'real' fruit and veg is far better than baby rice

You don't even need to purée food.

I gave my baby normal rice and vegetables from the start. Obviously not huge chunks that could choke but she chewed her food.

I use it to thicken watery puréed fruit e.g. Pear. I wouldn't give it on it's own personally.

If it's white baby rice try switching to wholegrain baby rice (much better for them than white rice). We did BLW which was going well with DD1 but after an afternoon with Nanna she point blank refused anything other than baby rice after my well meaning mum gave her some. She absolutely loved it mixed with fruit, luckily it was wholegrain rice rather than white rice so I mixed banana or mashed fruit into it. I also bought those Ella's kitchen pouches which was 100% pureed mango/apples etc though I was reluctant to buy anything processed they were ok and handy to have to rustle up quickly and I carried on mixing them into other things for quite a while with minimal wastage as I only used what I needed. Luckily it was only a short lived phase and DD1 soon discovered better food!

Thanks for all the advice, he's not 6 months yet but doesn't take a lot of milk during the day and brings up a lot of what he does take during the day so I have started giving him baby rice and porridge, he loves the porridge and seems to fill him up well as he was drinking a lot at night due to not taking much during the day. I will try puréed fruit and veg thanks

What can I mix the purée with?

I second mxing it with runny purée as it gives the fruit/veg more texture

How much milk is he taking? You don't want him taking food at the expense of milk which is more important at that age

He takes 18-20 ounces at night and around 12-15 in the day, i give him a bottle after he has had a bit of food and I've noticed he keeps the milk down better now.

How old is your baby?

Don't answer that OP! We are better off not knowing!

He's 4 months, which I know a lot of people will say is too young for food but since starting I've noticed better sleep, mood and his poo's are more solid as previously they were very runny. I'm still making sure I give him milk whenever he is hungry and the food is in small portions. He has always been a very strong and clever baby holding up his own head since day 1.

Lol at a "clever" 4 month old!

My older two were weaned at 4 months as that guideline then. They mostly had mixed fruit and vegetable purées.

Soup, he's smarter than his father so have to give him some credit!

Is this a wind up? Stop the food, give more milk if he needs it. if he starts losing weight, talk to your health visitor.

Jaxing of course the age is relevant as it affects the answer to the question. Like whether it's appropriate to be suggesting finger foods or gluten or meat and so on. A 3 or 4 month old baby is very different to a 5 nearly 6 month old.

Is your baby sitting up sufficiently? Tongue thrust gone? Chewing/swallowing?

Strong and/or clever is a matter of parental opinion and not really relevant . You sound v proud though!

Of course his poo is meant to be runny - babies are designed for a liquid diet! Please put the baby rice away for a couple of months until he can sit up alone in the high chair and tongue thrust is gone. DD could also hold her own head from birth and she was 5.5 months before she was physically ready. We also did BLW and 'food for fun until one' may not be totally accurate, but is a good indicator of pace.

You can mix it with anything puréed! But at 4 months I'd introduce new foods one at a time. (So carrot purée with the rice for a couple of days. Then do Apple Purée for a couple of days and if they're both tolerated well you can mix Apple and carrot)

I always thought avocado was the prefect weaning food-mashed really smooth.

Technically the advice is to wean from 6 months or when all of the signs are there-like a Pp said, sitting up, tinge thrust gone, but if you're going to do it now just be careful of allergic reactions and choking.

If he's happier on food as it's staying down and he's cranky and vomiting on milk plus the constant feeding it does sound possible.

Might be worth a trip to the gp they can give you something to thicken the milk.

Of course early weaning is sometimes advised in some cases nit you should get it ruled in or out first.

So many people think their baby is special and that it's fine to ignore expert advice and give them solids months too soon... Perhaps if you put a dash of vodka in your baby's bottle he might seem happy and sleep better too, that doesn't make it healthy! You just wouldn't do it!

Ditch the baby rice, there's no nutritional value in it whatsoever. Sweet potato or parsnip usually goes down well.
