controlled comforting

My baby is 10 weeks old and won't nap for longer that 45 mins on his own, I end up having to hold him for the rest of his nap - was thinking about controlled comforting, any thoughts?

Plus there tend to be a lot of folk on this site who want to take the peer-reviewed approach with child rearing as with most other things in life. People who perhaps work in academia...I like that fact, that it isn't just old wives tales and tradition.
