Is nude rude?!

Is rude nude?
I'd be interested in others opinions on this......
My DD is 23 months, and I have no problem whatsoever in her running around our home with a bare bum. A friend (yes, the same one who's DD kicked mine in the face, and who has extremely different views to mine on parenting as a whole anyway!) calls to our home quite often, and always sees fit to comment to my DD that she's 'rudey'. Again, and again, and again, and again, and again (it wears thin!). Last time she called, she went on for quite a time about it, so I said "actually, we don't think it's rude at all, we're all the same down there, I've got one, you've got one...." but she obviously didn't listen, and went on to put my DD's knickers on when I went to make a cuppa! I didn't make a big deal over it, as the whole point for me is to help DD feel as comfortable with herself and her body as she can.
What do you think? Should littleys be made to feel uncomfortable about themselves at such a young age, or am I just weird in thinking this would be wrong?!

Ds1 used to do that when he was learning to wipe his bottom himself. First thing in the morning, I'd be fast asleep and suddenly this bottom would come looming up at me and he'd part his cheeks and go "is my bum clean now Mum?" Oh the joys of motherhood.

lou33 · 17/03/2004 15:37

I get that too. I do wish dh would stop it though.

CountessDracula · 17/03/2004 15:37

My DD's both love to strip naked and run about

WSM · 17/03/2004 18:43

My 18 month old DD LURRRRVES being butt naked in our house. I agree with most that it is your friends problem, not yours.

Tinker · 17/03/2004 19:34

I get the wiped (sometimes!) bottom thrust into my face all the time.

Do agree that's completely ok for kids to run around naked but I do feel a bit sorry for your friend. She's got a hang-up about it and I'm sure she really wishes she didn't. My mum thinks it's 'rude' for kids to always be naked and feel uncomfortable with it - just the way she(and me) were brought up. But I have made a very concious effort to not be hung up about these things for my daughter not me. I mostly definitely do NOT say 'Is it clean?'

handlemecarefully · 17/03/2004 21:21

Your friend is wrong, but like Tinker I feel a teeny bit sorry for her. I am sure that she is 'prudish' because this was instilled in her as a child. I know my mum (lovely in many respects) gave me baggage about nudity, and I've had to make a real effort to de-programme myself!

You are totally doing the right thing - letting your daughter grow up without a complex about nudity...

stupidgirl · 17/03/2004 21:57

I'm glad it's not just mine! Dd gets out of bed in the morning and goes into the loo and 2 minutes later is yelling (at the top of her voice, of course!) "I've done a poo!" and I will go in to find her bent double with her bottom in the air waiting for me to wipe it for her! Bless! Dd has the most fabulous pot belly, I love seeing her running round in the nuddy. Ds never did it much when he was small, but now he does it because dd does!

Debbiethemum · 17/03/2004 22:03

I agree with everyone else - your friend is the one with the complex.

But does remind me of my friends little boy, hated being clothed, would strip off again on the way downstairs, so it was difficult to get to the childminders (about 10 houses up the same road). My friend got sick of this and didn't dress him again that day, so walked up the road with him naked - this soon cured him as it was winter at the time !!!!!

aloha · 17/03/2004 22:14

All of you with young toddlers who run around bare - don't you have messy carpets?
If we let ds run around naked for more than 30 seconds we have pools of wee - or worse - everywhere.

stupidgirl · 17/03/2004 22:21

Aloha, I think not having clothes on often helps avoid the accidents. They are more aware and can get to the loo more quickly. We did have quite a few accidents in the early stages, but dd trained quite early.

aloha · 17/03/2004 22:23

ah, getting to the loo...not a concept that appeals to ds You are all lucky people!

JJ · 17/03/2004 22:26

aloha, yes.

The alternative is worse, plus I pretend he's learning something.

need a cleaning tip?
