DD is 7 and in year three....one of the youngest. She is suddenly looking rather short net to the others..measured her today and she comes up at 4 feet exactly.

Is that short? Or are all the kids here giants? She's 8 in July....how tall are your 7/8 year olds please?

I KNOW I abu to ask this here but bugger it.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
iseenodust · 27/02/2012 21:18

DS 7.5 is 132cm. He is youngest in year3, about avg height for boys in his class. The tallest in the class is a girl. They are a noticeably tall class, tower over the year2's.

Linnet · 27/02/2012 21:19

dd2 is 8 in May and she is just under 4ft 1

DamnBamboo · 27/02/2012 21:20

Yes midori yes, she will certainly be presentable if she manages to hoik her trousers up and leave her bum alone.

MrsBeakman · 27/02/2012 21:21

My daughter will be 8 in July too. I will measure her tomorrow. Does it run in the family to be short or does she have any symptoms such as lethargy? I only ask as a friend of mine's son started off normal height and then began to look short when compared to his peers and it turned out he had a thyroid problem and is now on medication for it.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 27/02/2012 21:22

So, according to the growth charts, an average 7yo girl should be 122cm, or 4' and an average 8 yo should be 127cm or 4'2".

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 27/02/2012 21:25

So your DD is 7 1/2 and should be 4'1". She's just an inch under average and still greater than the 25th centile.

OlympicEater · 27/02/2012 21:27

Y3, nearly 8 4ft 6in, one of the tallest in her class but both DH and I are tall - I'm the shorter sibling at 5ft 10 (sis a smidge of 6ft) and DH is the shortest sibling at 6ft (BIL is 6ft 6)

MrsBeakman · 27/02/2012 21:28

Just read a couple of other posts and it doesn't sound like there's a problem.

signet · 27/02/2012 21:31

My DD in year 3 is also 4 feet, but she's not the shortest. The thing that annoys her the most is that her brother (5) is also 4 feet and everyone assumes they are twins!

cricketballs · 27/02/2012 21:49

my ds was dx with failure to thrive when he was a baby (even a bone ageing x-ray showed he was far behind his chronological age) and put on a diet of 4 x the normal calorie requirements; until he was about 8/9 he was far smaller in weight and height to anyone his age......he is now 12 and I think he will end up taller than his brother as he suddenly can not stop growing

workshy · 27/02/2012 21:51

DD was 8 last month and 4ft 8 with size 3 feet

and she's NOT the tallest in the class

OliviaMumsnet · 27/02/2012 22:31

Hi there
We will move this thread to behaviour / development
Thanks

DS (7), year 3 and youngest in school - 8 in August.

He's 124cm so 4ft nearly 1!! He is the 5th smallest in the school.

He is on the 50th %tile though it's just every other child who's on the 30th %tile (roughly) and above is taller than him because there all older.

Don't worry about her being short though. I'm 5"7 and his dad is 5"11 so I doubt DS will be short. (BTW I'm the shortest in my immediate family!)

youarekidding · 27/02/2012 22:52

Oh and DS has just had a growth spurt and is now a size 13 shoe!

QED · 27/02/2012 23:00

How does everyone know how tall their children are? Might measure mine in the morning Grin. DD is nearly 6.5 and probably about 120cm or nearly 4 foot and DS was 8 in November and about 130cm or about 4 foot 3. DD seems about average in her class although as she is one of the oldest she may be a bit smaller. There are quite a few tall children in DS's class but again he seems around average.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 27/02/2012 23:02

I know how tall they are because we measured them a couple of weeks ago.
DH was looking into what car seat we would need for holiday so we were checking weight and heights

OvO · 27/02/2012 23:07

According to those charts I'm the height of an average 11.5 year old. Grin

TimrousBeastie · 27/02/2012 23:13

DD turned 8 in december and shes 140 cm which is 4ft 7 I think. Shes tall for her age and she has big feet aswell-shes already in an adult 4!

iseenodust · 28/02/2012 11:46

QED measured him in half-term because was tired of taking clothes back that said his age but didn't fit (remembering he is avg height in his class).

Northumberlandlass · 28/02/2012 12:50

My DS is 8 (Yr3) - we actually just did height/weight last Sunday. He is 4ft 8" and 6 st 3llb. He is one of the tallest in the year.
My Dh and I are both 6ft tall though

SoupDragon · 28/02/2012 12:51

Why don't you plot her height on one of the height charts from the Red Book and see??

SoupDragon · 28/02/2012 12:54

My (just) 6 yo DD appears to be 3'10" Hmm

Canella · 28/02/2012 12:56

My ds1 was 7 in October and is 143cm (4ft 8?) & is in a size 38/39 shoe. He is most definitely the tallest in the class.
But i'm nearly 5' 10 and dh is 6' 3 so its no surprise really (and ds1 was 10lbs 13 at birth & 61cm long so again no surprise.)

Bunbaker · 28/02/2012 13:42

Don't worry SoupDragon. DD was that height at 6. She was growing at an average of 3" a year. By 7 she was 4'1".

SoupDragon · 28/02/2012 14:00

I'm not worried - my 21 yo niece is over 6' tall :o
