It is common as in popular, but I wouldn't call it common as in chavvy.

To me, a 'chav' name is one that is exclusively used by a particular part of the population. Therefore, if it passes the Telegraph test (is used significantly by Telegraph readers), it is fine. There are over 100 references to Amelia in the Times - so whilst 'chavs' may use the name, so do 'posh' people too, therefore making it multi-class or classless in my book

It is pretty though, I like it.

SarfEasticated · 02/06/2010 22:21

My reaction is that the name sounds a bit too pretty, makes me think of the names of those china 'collectible' dolls. If your daughter turns into a tom-boy/ well 'ard teen she may have trouble with it.

LuluF · 02/06/2010 23:17

I think bigbluebump has hit the nail on the head. It's not about being 'posh' or 'chavvy'- it's about being able to pin-point the year your child was born by the name you gave it.

I'm just thinking back to when I was at school - Sarah, Emma, Lisa - you knew they were born in 73/74.

Housemum · 03/06/2010 00:33

Late 60's early 70's - Julie, Susan/Suzanne, Sally

Late 80's/early 90's - Kayleigh, Eloise

I have met quite a few Amelias at toddler groups so Amelie is probably destined to be called Amelia by mistake in the same way a lot of Georginas are called Georgia!

jabberwocky · 03/06/2010 01:10

I like it a lot. Very pretty and errr, very similar to my own name which people are always saying how lovely it is

asdx2 · 03/06/2010 08:16

I like it a lot, very pretty. Amelia on the birth certificate will give her the option of a more "grown up" name later

diddl · 03/06/2010 08:32

I like it.
Actually I love it.

My daughter has a middle name which is much derided on here-but I love it as it was the same middle name as my dear, dear Gran.

My daughter loves it & is hoping one day to have a daughter to use it herself!

MagalyZz · 03/06/2010 14:29

It's quite a popular combo. I mean popular not common too.

What about Penelope with Polly for short. Polly has a similar ring to Millie, but it is rarer.

qumquat · 04/06/2010 10:58

I don't like the name personally but agree it's now classless due to being so popular. But even if it were 'chav' or 'posh' I still don't think these are reasons to use or not use it, it's whether you like it that counts.

Not chavvy at all, it's lovely. :)

ShoutyHamster · 23/05/2011 20:27

Nothing wrong with it at all - but as bigbluebump says, it will date her like a Ming vase in the hands of an expert Grin

Both names really, really popular and 'of their time', they will date in a way a more unusual name won't. But that's not to say the name is boring or common!

pilates · 23/05/2011 20:30

No not chavy - very nice.

shoobidoo · 23/05/2011 20:53

This thread is almost a year old, surely the baby is named by now... Hmm

Hulababy · 23/05/2011 20:56

It's pretty.

It's quite popular, but then most names only become popular becaue so many people like them.

MeantToStopAtTwo · 23/05/2011 21:14

Very pretty and honestly not chavvy in the slightest.

mich54321 · 23/05/2011 22:18

I love it - it's classy not chavvy !

mathanxiety · 23/05/2011 22:46

For some irrational reason, I prefer Emilia to Amelia. Emilia Rose sounds lovely to me.

I love Penelope with Polly as a nn...

WanderingSheep · 23/05/2011 22:52

Gah, I already posted on this thread a year ago! I imagine that the baby has already been named as I wasn't even pg when I replied to the OP and even I have given birth since!

mathanxiety · 23/05/2011 23:02

I hate it when that happens...

saffy85 · 24/05/2011 06:27

Chavvy? No. Popular, yes probably. But then I wouldn't personally see a problem with that. Amelia Rose is a lovely name.

saffy85 · 24/05/2011 06:29

Bugger! Didn't check the fecking date! Blush

Boogiemumma · 24/05/2011 09:44

It's a beautiful name, prefer Amelia to Millie but both lovely

oohlaalaa · 24/05/2011 09:45

I like it. Definitely not chavvy.

shoobidoo · 24/05/2011 09:48

I wonder what the OP chose in the end, the baby must be born by now Smile
