Hi all, am 6 months PG and struggling with boys' names. DS is Samuel and we don't want anything too far out. Anyone have any thoughts about Rory?

Charlieknows · 28/05/2010 23:45

I love it! We've called our son the Scottish Gaelic version Ruairidh pronounced Roo-ah-ray. A lovely name either way...

honeydragon · 28/05/2010 23:53

I love it....
..........now

Dh insisted this was to be ds's name throughout and I rebelled throught he whole pregnancy gave birth, dh came to hospital said what do we call him then?

I decided he looked "like a fucking Rory" ,.

I now love the name am so glad that dh came up with it and ds is very proud of his name and tell people it means "red king" and "brave".

disclaimer - I hav esince also let dh name our daughter and that turned out ok too

piprabbit · 28/05/2010 23:53

I used to love it - but now, every time I hear it the phrase 'Roooooaaaarrrry the racing car' echoes through my brain.

Sorry.

Woollymummy · 28/05/2010 23:55

sorry, not since the Archers introduced poor little love child

MilkNoSugarPlease · 29/05/2010 08:30

LOVE it!!

Ariesgirl · 29/05/2010 11:55

I used to have no strong feelings about the name, but these days I know someone called Rory and he is absolutely the evilest, pettiest, stupidest tosspot I have ever met in my life! Just shows how much you are influenced by people you know I guess.

Er...other than that it's great.

TheNextMrsDepp · 29/05/2010 11:57

I really like it (it was on our list too), even though the only Rory I know is a little thug.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 29/05/2010 12:00

I like it, but prefer the Gaelic spelling os Ruaridh. I find Rory quite a hard name to pronounce, and am nothing like Jonathan Woss.

orienteerer · 29/05/2010 12:11

Yes, nice name.

Hedwig3 · 29/05/2010 16:26

Rory is a great name.

mathanxiety · 29/05/2010 18:01

Love it no matter how it's spelled. And I think it goes well with Samuel (or Sam).

MistyB · 29/05/2010 18:19

I love the name Rory. Was on our list for all three children. I'm Irish with a not so difficult to spell name so all for the simplest spellings!!

TubbyDuffs · 29/05/2010 18:21

DS1 is a Rory, so obviously I love it!

blondemumma · 29/05/2010 19:23

Thanks everyone, appreciate all the comments. It does seem to be a bit of a like or loathe kind of name, but I think it goes well with Sam and with our surname. Might well be our no. 1 choice. Will probably be a girl now

We've just called DS3 Rory and have had nothing but positive comments......

LittleSilver · 29/05/2010 19:24

No

shockers · 29/05/2010 19:31

Ariesgirl I think I know him !

honeydragon · 29/05/2010 21:33

rory can be a girls name to apparantly never met one though

Charlieknows · 26/06/2010 00:57

OK, for a start the Anglocised version of RUAIRIDH (the correct spelling) is Roderick.

Ruairidh = Scottish Gaelic spelling/name
Roary = Irish Gaelic name (unsure of spelling)
Roderick = English version

HTH

RipMacWinkle · 26/06/2010 07:26

I love Rory.

But am confused about all the points re gaelic spellings. To me, they're completely different names as the pronunciation is different.

Rory - row (as in row boat) - ry
Ruairi/Ruaridh etc - roo (as in rue the day) - ry

Either way, both fab names. We couldn't use either due to sounding too much like another name (mine!) or someone close to us using it first.

Ineedsomesleep · 26/06/2010 07:45

Always used to like it but Reary the Racing Car has ruined it for me.

Magalyxyz · 26/06/2010 08:33

I think it's lovely.

PenguinNZ · 26/06/2010 13:21

I agree with Pip Rabbit and Ineedsomesleep, great name but all I can hear is 'Roary - the racing car!'.

NB: A couple of days ago I asked DS (24m) if he wanted a little bro or sis and he said 'Roary'....think he just meant for me to put the DVD on though.

Louplet · 26/06/2010 13:23

I like it but have a good friend called Rory so may be biased.
