Just remembered a girl's name I loved when I was expecting DC1 (who turned out to be a boy).

DH initially liked it and then went right off it and I think he must have put me off it then as I've only just remembered what a passion I had for it - and now I like it again!

I also really love Purdy as a nn

Thoughts? Is this a hormonal thing?

Sorry - took me a while to return.

It derives from the Latin perditus which means lost or the lost one. It's a character in Shakespeare's Winter's Tale who is abandoned by her father because he mistakenly believes she is not his child. The play does have a happy ending though so please don't let the Shakespearean potential tragedy put you off.

And just to prove my education was not entirely wasted, A Winter's Tale contains the most famous stage direction ever -'Exit, pursued by a bear'

I think it is a lovely name.

KayC88 · 29/04/2010 11:52

I think its very pretty and I like unusual names, who wants the same names as everyone else?? as mentioned it means 'the lost one' and Im ashamed to say I thought of Jilly Coopers 'Polo' before 101 Dalmations!!
Wish my mother had come up with something as lovely for me! she was lacking in imagination if not something FAR worse when she named the 3 of us!! tho I wont say our names as dont want to offend anyone with the same ones! If you like it, go for it!
We chose our daughters' name 4 years before she was born and stuck with it, we still love it and she does too and shes 12 now - so if you've liked the name for so long its probably the right one for you!

Perdita Robinson. Mistress of George IV (big fat guy). She was an actress.

cheerfulvicky · 29/04/2010 13:08

I think it's beautiful, I really like it...

swanandduck · 29/04/2010 13:26

Perdita was one of the main characters in the Noel Streatfield classic 'Ballet Shoes'. The name reminds me more of that than of Jilly Cooper novels, and I quite like it.

teaandcakeplease · 29/04/2010 19:42

I think it's a very pretty name. Prefer the nick name Dita though.

cloelia · 29/04/2010 19:46

I agree with swanan, was expecting to see Ballet Shoes mentioned earlier, lovely name despite the "lost" .

CJCregg · 29/04/2010 20:22

Pauline, Petrova and Posy were the girls in Ballet Shoes.

cloelia · 29/04/2010 21:22

goodness me so they were. sorry Cregg. still a nice name though!!

BexJ78 · 29/04/2010 22:37

I love it, we nearly went with it for DD, but after a similar thread on here, and some general mulling it over, we chickened out. If we have another DD though might grow some and use it. I think it's really lovely.

My friends daughter is called Perdita. All four of her kids have shakesperian names as does she, so there is a theme going on!!
All sound strange to us, but they suit her and her kids perfectly.

GibberingGinger · 30/04/2010 13:28

CakeandRoses, I think it goes quite well with Felix. I really don't associate Perdita with cats at all. Felix on the other hand is quite a cat name.

pigletmania · 30/04/2010 16:15
