Just remembered a girl's name I loved when I was expecting DC1 (who turned out to be a boy).

DH initially liked it and then went right off it and I think he must have put me off it then as I've only just remembered what a passion I had for it - and now I like it again!

I also really love Purdy as a nn

Thoughts? Is this a hormonal thing?

I like it alot - but i also like the Jilly Cooper/ Terry Pratchett books alot.. not sure what that says about me...

CakeandRoses · 28/04/2010 14:41

Horton - you've just made me realise that I already have a (so-called) cat's name for my DS. I'm a bit slow on the uptake today!

Would Perdita with Felix sound ridiculously cat-obsessed?

Tocca - I do my best

Perdita immediately reminds me of 101 Dalmations but that's a positive for me. She was lost, but ended up happy

But I don't like Purdy, sorry. Reminds me of Joanna Lumley & pudding-bowl haircut.

carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 28/04/2010 14:54

Actually, I love it. Always have. I know there are the Jilly Cooper and 101 links but even so, I think it's a gorgeous name. It is of course Shakespearean too

Sophie78 · 28/04/2010 15:24

Although it is not a name I would use for my DC, I like it & like the NN Purdy too.

toddlerama · 28/04/2010 15:32

I love it! And I know a Perdy who is really beautiful.

Romanarama · 28/04/2010 15:55

In Italian it means leak, including human leaks: discharge (yes, including the kind you go to the gynaecologist about).

Chrysanthamum · 28/04/2010 15:59

Thats right i remember italian doctors talking about perdite meaning discharge.

CJCregg · 28/04/2010 16:26

I like it, and it's unusual. There was a really pretty girl at my school called Perdita. I had a pash on her.

FanjolinaJolie · 28/04/2010 16:31

Purdy is not good.

I see potential for teasing along the turdy-purdy lines.

CJCregg · 28/04/2010 16:33

But it would be Perdy, not Purdy. Do people called Ferdy get called turds?

CaveMum · 28/04/2010 17:04

Not for me. 101 dalmations = far too many dog jokes.

Alaro · 28/04/2010 17:18

I like it.

lottiejenkins · 28/04/2010 17:27

First thing i thought of when i saw the thread name was Jilly Cooper!

maamalady · 28/04/2010 17:56

Me too, Butterball: "that Agnes who calls herself Perditax"

Not a good name to pick, I think.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 28/04/2010 18:26

I should think of Perdita in The Winter's Tale and think what a lovely unusual Shakespearean name.

I actually think of 101 Dalmatians and "that Agnes who calls herself Perditax"

I don't think it's a bad name, though, just one with a lot of cultural baggage.

GrumbleBee · 28/04/2010 20:25

I love it.

Makes me think of a little girl in a childrens' book I loved - The Queen Elizabeth Story by Rosemary Sutcliffe. This Perdita lived in Devon and was friends with fairies, so pretty much the opposite of Jilly Cooper associations... though not necessarily any better

UnrequitedSkink · 28/04/2010 20:52

I love it but the Italian 'discharge' meaning would put me off!

Dita is nicer as a nn than Purdy/Perdy.

makes me think of the Purdy's vitamin drink.

kitsmummy · 28/04/2010 21:35

Oooh I like it, it's the kind of name I'd want but DH would never let me get away with!

taffetacat · 28/04/2010 21:45

Its one that I wanted for DD 3 years ago but DH wouldn't allow. Had a list of 6 - 5 of which were Shakespearian - he chose the only one that wasn't.

CakeandRoses · 28/04/2010 22:46

The discharge thing (oddly) doesn't put me off - tons of names will mean something or have a dodgy connotation in another language. Mind you, we love Italy and go there a lot so we'd be doing a lot of travelling with 'a child named discharge'

I agree with CJCregg on the rhyming insults thing - do Marys get called hairy? Silly Tilly? Hugh the poo? etc

But WHAT do you think of the fact I already have a feline-named DS? Is that the deal-breaker?

ReshapeWhileDamp · 28/04/2010 23:25

lol at 'Perditax'! I'd forgotten that. It mostly makes me think of A Winter's Tale though, rather than Dodi Smith or Pterry Pratchett (cos I is pretentious) but that would just make me sad. It's a sad name, IMO.

Well, either that or a spotty dog's name.

ThatVikRinA22 · 28/04/2010 23:33

i love it. perdy is a fab name. i also remember the new avengers...
