So sick of baby name books; please help: Josie or Celia

Josie and Ceila are our 2 shortlisted names. Josie would be used but short for Josephine in case it's too babyish when she gets older.

Husband and I have been through so many discussions on names I almost can't face thinking about it anymore and really want your help.

Is Josie at all (sorry for using the word, was quoted at me by my awful brother) chavvy? Or should we ignore my brother and his Aurelia-naming North London baby ways?

Which do you prefer?

Any thought on a middle name to go with either graciously and happily welcomed.

Thank you!

Oooh I ummed and ahhed over Josephine with DD (didn't in the end), I think it is a lovely name and has loads of options for nicknames - Josie, Jo, Joey, Posie. It is lovely. Also on out list was Cecily (similar to Celia) which is also lovely IMO.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 13/04/2010 20:24

our list, not out list

PfftTheMagicDragon · 13/04/2010 20:25

Josie is not chavvy, I have only known a couple of josies and they were both quite posh

Haliborange · 13/04/2010 20:28

Josie.

DebiNewberry · 13/04/2010 20:34

Both Josephine and Celia are lovely.

Aurelia is nice too

Josephine Viola?

cyteen · 13/04/2010 20:35

Josie all the way. Josephine is strong and classy and rather fabulous, Josie is a lovely day-to-day name. Celia to my mind is rather limp, although JMO of course.

maaam · 13/04/2010 20:36

Thanks for reasssurance on Josie. Ooh Cecily lovely too. Damn it, need to keep list down not add another but thanks!

Aurelia is very nice too Debi and that was a bit inverted snob of me - sorry.

Oooooh they are both really lovely. Hmmm. I think Celia edges it for me, slightly. Gorgeous names .

skidoodly · 13/04/2010 20:40

Josie, actually like the full Josephine better, but Josie nice too.

Do not like Celia at all. It is a horrible middle-aged woman name. Yuck.

Cecily is nice though.

morningpaper · 13/04/2010 20:40

Celia makes me think of that bad girl in the Simon and Garfunkel song

Josie is a very good name indeed

PuppyMonkey · 13/04/2010 20:42

My mum is 86 today and she is and always has been Josie... and she is no chav.

JoeyBettany · 13/04/2010 20:48

Lots of good role models for a Josephine, too,

Josephine Butler
'Jo' in Little Women

Both names lovely but prefer Josephine of the two as more potential for shortenings

maaam · 13/04/2010 20:51

PuppyMonkey I'm sure you have impeccable breeding, happy birthday to your mum (and god knows what an 86 year old chav would be like!).

What middle name could go? I'm afraid Debi I'm not too keen on Viola because of years of enforced music lessons that still make me shudder.

Oh lovely names . I particularly love Celia (I like Aurelia too )

DebiNewberry · 13/04/2010 21:02

A friend has just had the most gorgeous little Viola so I am obsessed... but I feel your pain.

Wasn't it Cecilia in the Simon and Garfunkel song?

ozmetric · 13/04/2010 21:06

Josephine

pitterpatterfeet · 13/04/2010 21:06

Really like Josephine, think nn Josie OK.

letsblowthistacostand · 13/04/2010 21:10

my cousin's baby is Josie Michelle. Could go with Marie, Ann, Mae/May, that sort of thing.

Skegness · 13/04/2010 21:13

Josie

thegirlwithsomethingextra · 13/04/2010 21:14

I love both your names, but slightly prefer Josie over Ceila. It has a friendly, feisty sound to it

Takver · 13/04/2010 21:20

Josephine Isabel is an excellent combination IMO

MumMadeofLego · 13/04/2010 21:26

Both are lovely names. Not remotely chav.

Tough choice.

choosyfloosy · 13/04/2010 21:29

great choice.

Josie Ramona

mathanxiety · 13/04/2010 21:44

I like Josie, but love Josephine, and I also love Celia.

So no help at all
