Felicity with the nickname Tilly... Too much of a leap?

Surely it doesn't reeeeally matter. Call her Felicity if you like it, but then tell people her nn is Tilly. My Godson is called Alex, nn Stan. We tend to call DD1 Doodle, though her name is Daisy. No one had a problem with calling Godson Stan - most people understood his name was actually Alex.

I like it. You may find that you name the baby Felicity and a totally different nickname sticks - I chose DD2's name purely based on what I was going to shorten it to; we now use another nn which is nothing like the one I had planned!

too much of a leap imo - oddly, I know 2 sisters who are called Felicity and Tilly (from Matilda).

A friend of mine used Fliss as a nickname for Felicity; I prefer Lissie though.

Unfortunately, I think it's too much of a leap as it's not a natural nn for Felicity...

However, could you call her Felicity with Tilly or Matilda as a middle name? Or if you love the name Tilly why not call her that with Felicity as a middle name?

littledawley the same thing happened with DD1, her nickname was all planned out and she is known as something completely different.
thumbchick DH really doesn't like Matilda, so it's a no go!

I've just googled other names to use Tilly as a nn for and found your previous thread - Nathalie/Ottilie seemed good options to shorten to Tilly instead?

Or you could go all "chav" and call her Chantilly... Or what about Chantelle? that could go to Tilly at a push. Probably not the right "sort" of name though?

If you like it, go for it. People might think it's strange when you ask on Mnet, but in real life, when they meet Tilly (NN Felicity) people will get used to it.

A NN is something you actually call your child. It doesn't even have to relate to their name. Lots of my adult friends are known by NNs which have nothing to do with their actual given names.

Come to think of it, I call my DS Squidget a lot of the time. I must get out of the habit before he starts nursery though. I don't want him being called Squidget aged 36! )

What about Ottilie? Or Ottoline. Those names wouldn't be my cup of tea but they do lead more logically to Tilly.

I agree its not too much of a leap! Who says a nn has to be a shortened version of original name? I love Tilly! Also Felicity! Go for it, like lowrib said, people will get used to it.

well, I know a 2 year old called Jamie whose given name is actually Benjamin! As his parents always called him Jamie that's just what he is known as. So if you like it, go for it.

agree a nn is what you agree to call someone as a pet familiar form . hada great aunt letitia always known as totty until she died aged 99 simply because it was the only sound her younger brothers could say.we have a newborn felicity dh favourite name not mine so at the moment we are toying with the nn tilly (great minds think alike) or bella as her 3rd name is arabella neither name related to felicity but may work as nns until shes old enough to make her own decision so if you want her nn to be tilly go for it

I like Tilly, but the usual nns for Felicity are pretty harsh IMHO (Fliss, Flick - both ugh).

Not too much of a leap, but I think you'll find it's invariably classmates or the child themselves who choose their nicknames, unless you don't really mean a nickname, but a sort of "we'll always call her Tilly even though it says Felicity on official docs" (in which case, erm, why not just name her Tilly to start with?

My dd is called Tilly and people always assume it is short for Matilda and are surprised it is officially just Tilly, dp started telling people when asked that it was short for Atilla

Bucharest I do mean exactly that! Whilst I love Tilly, Im a big fan of Sunday names and would prefer a more formal name to start with.

In our family a nickname is anything that you want it to be - go with what you like.

FWIW one of DDs many nicknames is Tilly when her real name is far removed from it - more so that Felicity - the name arose from when Dniece was learning to talk and Tilly was the closest she could manage and its stuck.

I also know of two children who use their middle names all the time - most people don't actually know their proper name.

What about Milly? As a nn for Amelia... Although I think you can give whatever nickname you want. I also think that Tilda sounds like more of a proper name, nn Tilly, although I think this is also short for Mathilda.
