What do you think of Saskia as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

First thought was woman who got hit over head with an ashtray on Eastenders.

Second thought was racist chav on Big Brother (that's where the chav accusation may have come from).

But the name itself I like. It has a nice ring to it, and I like the s-k part of it. And the fact you could say -ya or -ia and they both sound good.

tiredfeet · 31/03/2010 18:47

Love it, pretty and a bit different

The Saskia I know is most definitely not chavvy (if that matters to you!)

msrisotto · 31/03/2010 18:47

Aah, I didn't know about the unfortunate 'enders & big brother references. Puts me off somewhat. Shame!

Pofacedagain · 31/03/2010 18:49

I would have named dd Saskia if it were not for the fact that is has chavvy connotations. But maybe that is a silly reason. Lovely name.

cyongaze · 31/03/2010 18:50

Chavvy wouldn't even have occurred to me.

I've been watching too much downmarket TV, clearly

thighsmadeofcheddar · 31/03/2010 18:53

Very pretty. The Saskia I know is also most definitely not chavvy.

I think I remember that Saskia from Big Brother eons ago who used to say 'End Of' a lot and went out with a hideous cretin of a boy [not unusual for BB obviously] And I have heard the name called out a couple of times in a not so, er, elegant fashion.

But it is a lovely name. And feel quite sad I didn't have more balls to use it sometimes.

aristocat · 31/03/2010 19:02

I like Saskia, though it reminds me of the character in Angela Carter's book 'Wise Children'.

lotster · 31/03/2010 19:07

The only evidence I have ever seen of Saskia being chavvy was that brass from BB who got it on with Maxwell..

I see Saskia as a classy, ice-blonde bobbed haired, possibly 80's girl. Skis a lot

lotster · 31/03/2010 19:08

..and then I read the thread properly and see that that Saskia was already mentioned. harumph.

Pofacedagain · 31/03/2010 19:09

Yes it was Maxwell wasn't it, rather than Max? Max nice, Maxwell, er, well, it suits him.

LaurieFairyCake · 31/03/2010 19:12

I think it's a lovely name and I'm a bit at someone watching big brother (surely that makes the watcher a chav?) and then associating a name with someone on it and calling it chavvy.

There are 63 million people who don't watch Bir Brother so no one will know.

I think I went to school with a Saskia Hutch? or i dreamed it up from a tv programme.

Blimey. I think it is a bit harsh to call someone who has seen BB a chav, especially if they've said it is a lovely name. Downright rude actually.

But grin about it all the same.

Saskia from bb ruined the name for me too.

I used to associate it with a cool English actress (saskia reeves?) but then that series of big brother happened and now I associate it with that dreadful woman - "a million percent" she used to say all the time too. I don't think of the name as chavvy, it just reminds me of someone I'd rather never think about again.
